15 min paddle towards the south side of the canyon. You'll see the kelp once you begin to cross the preserve line.

How would you know you are past the preserve lines? I've never launched in La Jolla and I don't have a GPS unit. Are there buoys marking the lines?

Yes there is a white pencil buoy. You can't miss it. Just go 50 to 100 yards past it to be safe. :cheers1:

This time of year it's easy to see the boundary because it's were the lobster trap buoys start. anything west of that and you're ok.

15 minutes is about right to get the reserve buoy. The buoy is supposed to mark the boundary of the marine reserve except they new mlpa extended the reserve but the powers that be never moved the buoy. I think anyway. Definitely this time of year the lobster traps mark the boundary line better than the buoy. Mike

15 minute paddle, line up the flag with a palm tree and your golden.

This is the way to know you are at the boundary when there are no lobster trap buoys.

x2 the bouy mark the old boundary, you need to go beyond them.

If you've got a phone with GPS you can use this to make sure: https://www.dfg.ca.gov/m/MPA/map
