The New way to clean your Reels

So my reels, where getting a little bit too salty and recently installed my first dishwasher soooo.....

I got the idea of putting my reels in there.... and i air dryed them....


Works Good!

Are there in dangers to doing this?

Well, it isn't April 1st so I'll give my thoughts.

The drying temp that a dishwasher reaches might liquefy the grease in the reel and it might leak out or settle in the lowest part of the reel.

well guess its time to regrease these babies... it sure took all the salt out and everything else along with it.

To dry them don't stick them in the dryer, place them in the microwave.

I abuse my reels, they end up under the water and so forth...


Last Year when I took them to shimano to get restored the rep guy told me:
to run them under hot water for about 5 mins because of how heavily corroded they get due to the salt water and how often the get soaked with salt water on my kayak.

I put my reels in the washing machine using a lot of fabric softener. It makes a lot of noise but the end result is one smooth and shiny reel(s).

Never had a problem with reel functionality and the Shimano service tech once told me my reels were a joy to service!

That makes sense I'll have to try that, i usually just give em a good rinse from the hose. I was just referring to the drying part though. I like to lay em on a towel or sumthin and let em air dry. If its a spinner sometimes I'll take off the handle and spool as well and it really dries nicely.

I usually take my reels apart and clean/lube them after every trip - it only takes about 15-20 minutes.

It's like I have a new reel every time I go out. :)

Dave do you use high efficiency detergent or regular?

Man you guys are way ahead of me. I never thought about putting them in the washer machine, but i have to find one without a glass/plastic window.:p

I have a idea how about sitting down at the bench and enjoying the experience of hand washing all the reel parts in hot soapy water then hand drying then inspecting and lubing and rebuilding each reel, that's all part of the joy of fishing. The dishwasher thing is like shooting a deer with no desire to properly clean and dress the kill.

I just leave all my gear in the back of my truck and go that car wash. I ask for the deluxe and the wax. Last time the guy even used the clay bar on my 2 speed, its way faster now. just be sure to tip at least 63.258%

I take all mine on the yearly trip to Yellowstone to see old faithful. The flash steam clean does wonders.
