This is a Heroes on the Water fund raising event.

http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwegallery/data/500/DSC_0242_qhdr.jpg

Last year we had over 100 entries and are adding a second halibut division this year. We are also adding a great bunch of raffle prizes. Our goal is to raise $5000 for the Southern California chapter of Heroes on the Water.
We anticipate this being the biggest kayak fishing tournament in southern California in 2015.

Mark your calenders and Check back here for all the details! We will be adding to this periodically as we iron out all the details. I have set up a Paypal link below. Cost is $25 .

Kids under the age of 18 fish for free with a paid adult.

Boundaries will be anywhere within the harbor. You may not go beyond the end of the 5 MPH zone within the channel.
Everyone is required check in and launch from the east facing beach adjacent to the ball field on Santa Clara Point, shotgun start 7am
prize payouts for the top finishers, all proceeds going to Heroes on the Water!

Tournament hours: 7am-1pm, check in starts at 6 am. You must be in line to weigh your fish no later than 1 pm

After the tournament we will all meet for a great BBQ & awards. Lunch served from noon until 2 pm

Rules:
*** By participating you must adhere to a code of sportsmanlike conduct. Any angler who violates the rules of the events may be disqualified and banned from future participation in all future events as well as all website interactions. This includes conduct before, during and after events both on and off the water as well as online. Conduct deemed inappropriate may be grounds for disqualification or denial from participation in any events or website activities. Judgments of conduct are at the sole discretion of the tournament directors, assisted by website moderators and host facility owners.
Bass division rules:

1. Sand, Spotted Bay and Calico Bass are the only allowable fish for weighing towards your final stringer.
2. A tournament win is based on the total weight of 3 heaviest fish at the final weigh-in at 1pm.
3. All bass submitted must be alive and at least 14” in length.

4. Artificial baits only. Scents are allowed – squid or other cut bait is not. Berkley Gulp! is allowed.
5. All fishing must be from a kayak, canoe or float tube. No trolling motors or propulsion systems other than paddle, kick or pedal (ie: Hobie kayaks) is allowed.
6. Fish Finders and GPS units are allowed.
7. Tournament hours will be from 7am until 1pm. You are responsible for being on time to the final weigh-in.
8. Scoring will determined by the total weight of an angler's 3 heaviest bass as weighed by the weigh boats.
9. You may weigh up to 10 total bass (no more than 5 in your tank at a time) while complying with DFG regulations. The angler is responsible for keeping track of the number of fish weighed. Attempting to weigh more than 10 bass could result in disqualification.
10. You must abide by all DFG regulations.
11. Bait barge ruling this year, no fishing within 20 yards, that means you or your lure/bait.
12. Total bay access, no fishing beyond the 5 MPH leading out of the channel to the ocean

13. All inquiries, objections or complaints concerning any believed infraction of tournament or DFG rules needs to be stated PRIOR to the awards ceremony.

New this year is the halibut division. Very simply, the biggest halibut weighed wins. There will be prizes awarded for the top 3 fish weighed. This is a separate division that you will specify upon check in. In this division you may use live and cut bait and fish more than 1 rod at a time. Live bait can be brought, bought or caught. Fish must be hooked, fought and landed from the kayak unassisted. Final weigh in is 1 pm and you must be in line at the scale no later than 1 pm.

No one fished near the bait barge that I noticed last year, I saw at least 3 others in that cove and we were all well enough away from the bait barge. However I agree that it should be out of bounds but not that cove.

Once our paperwork goes through we will be gathering some serious swag. Going to pump up the raffle and hopefully cut a big check for our Southern California Chapter of Heroes on the Water. We should have some sweet prizes, watch the top of this thread as sponsors and prizes will be added soon.

It's almost embarrassing for Andy to approach a potential sponsor about getting involved in our tournaments if there are only twenty of us signed up. Lets get that entry fee in so that the numbers show them we are interested in their participation as well. I would like to get our tournaments to get back to the fantastic ones we had in the Plastic Navy days. If you didn't get to fish in these big events you missed out on a really good time for all.
Andy can't do it alone so get out there and prod your fishing buddies to sign up early.

Andy,

Okay, I can do a day w/o the trolling motor and paddle instead... no problem.

But another question... I'm considering entering the Halibut Division but am curious about keeping the catch alive... or does that apply only to bass? I assume halibut need to be a legal length of 22", but be kept alive as well? Don't have a live well that large... and not sure if it applies in this division or not. Can you please clarify? Also, can you explain the procedure about weigh-in boats (as I heard someone mention that they might be in use for this event)... Thanks!

Last year we had over 100 entries and are adding a second halibut division this year.

4. Artificial baits only. Scents are allowed – squid or other cut bait is not. Berkley Gulp! is allowed.

This is a separate division that you will specify upon check in. In this division you may use live and cut bait and fish more than 1 rod at a time. Live bait can be brought, bought or caught.https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/scr/pixel.gif

Andy, if I join both divisions can I fish live bait for halibut on one rod and artificial bait(for bass) on the other?

Obviously, I'm aware that catching a bass on live bait does not count..................based on the size of the baits that I like to use for halibut I doubt a bass will swallow it

Iceman
04-03-2015, 07:12 AM

Jorge, I set it up this year where you had to specify one or the other, I hoped to persuade guys without livewells or just not into bass fishing an option to participate. Depending on how many we draw to the halibut division will determine what we do next year.

Hey Andy, maybe next year(or even this year) you could pay into both divisions but still only fish artificials? This would get $50 from guys like myself who would like to fish artificials but would still have a crack at winning the halibut division. The stipulation would be if you enter both divisions only artificials would be allowed on your boat.

See the words Quivera Basin? Right there. Look for the big stinky floating bait dock. I don't know why anyone would want to fish around it anyway, I have never caught anything around that thing on Non-tournament trips.

Can't understand why there are only half the number signed up from last year, but that just means less competition for fish...., and the raffle prizes! 8. Scoring will determined by the total weight of an angler's 3 heaviest bass as weighed by the weigh boats.

Will there be specific locations for the weigh boats? And if so can they be added to the map so everyone is on the same page?

What time does the parking lot open?
Thanks.

The weigh boats will be moving around, plan on keeping your fish alive as they may not come back your way for an hour or 2 depending on how busy they get.

Bait barge is being put off limits because it is one small area that could only be fished by a few. It is known to be a haven for big lazy sandbass.

Last year we set up on the sidewalk leading into OEX Mission Bay. sign in starts at 6am, Captains meeting 6:45am, start time 7am

If you are fishing in the halibut division and want to get bait from the receiver prior to 7 am start time, you have some options: You may launch elsewhere closer to the barge, like Mariners Point, get your bait and then paddle/pedal or even motor up to Santa Clara Point to check in or head down and back then check in. No lines in the water before 7am and no motors on the yaks after 7am.

You can launch from both sides of the Santa Clara Point peninsula, I will post a map when I get the chance.

The main objective of this tournament is to raise money and awareness to Heroes on the Water, so there will be no money pay outs. Please spend your $5-10.or more on raffle tickets, everyone in the bass division will be eligible for some kind of big bass award...........I will come up with a prize. :D

Our goal is still 150 entries and $5000 for SoCal Heroes on the Water.

Be a part of it!

Sidenote

Walk ups will be the same $25 fee, not charging any extra. Cash only the morning of the tournament. I am sure that the total will have exceeded 100 so will not include swag bag.

Raffle tickets will be $1 each, buy them before launching or after, while enjoying some killer fish tacos and a icy Coca Cola!

Andy, considering the option of launching at Mariner's Point. If I grab my bait early, and motor over to Santa Clara Point before check-in, do you think I could stow my BassYaks motor with Brent at OEX during the tournament, then pick it up afterwards. I can just pop it in and motor it back over to Mariner's Point after the tournament's over with. Last question, can I tie up at the dock there while checking in, etc. so as to keep my pump going and bait alive?

Thanks,

- Ken

When we get our fish weighed, since the boat will be moving around, will we be able to weigh in multiple times? For example, if I catch three bass and the boat comes by but it's still early in the day, can I weigh in more fish later? Or can I only weigh 3 fish one time?

See the first page of this thread

9. You may weigh up to 10 total bass (no more than 5 in your tank at a time) while complying with DFG regulations. The angler is responsible for keeping track of the number of fish weighed. Attempting to weigh more than 10 bass could result in disqualification.

HEROES ON THE WATER will be holding our own separate raffle on Saturday at the Mission Bay Classic.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE IN THE TOURNAMENT TO PARTICIPATE NOR DO YOU HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO WIN!
To enter this raffle for a $50.00 gift certificate to Pacific Coast Bait and Tackle all you have to do is donate your old rods and reels to us. What we are looking for is bass type set ups that we can use for our events.

You will receive 1 (one) ticket for each rod and 2 (two) tickets for each reel you donate.

All rods and reels must be in decent condition and work properly.

This is a good opportunity to clean out your garage a little bit while helping us and another HOW chapter that needs equipment.

Bring your gear to the HOW tent in exchange for your ticket(s).
If no one is at the tent to help you please find me (Cbad Mike).
Tickets will be drawn along with the main raffle so you don't need to be anywhere different to win!
Once again..... YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE PRESENT TO WIN!!

We will also gladly accept any other gear and tackle donations that you may have.

Any rods and reels deemed to old, not in working condition or in anyway unusable to us will not be eligible for the raffle.
(Please no snoopy rods) :)

I'm assuming that we can park on the other side of the ball fields in that larger parking lot, that's where I parked last time, in fact I can see my car in the photo that is being used. Pretty awe inspiring to too see the kayak community come together to support this tournamnent and Heroes on the Water! Thanks again to everyone who was responsible for making this all come together.

Does anyone know what the final count of anglers was? I know that over 100 were signed up, but how many did we have with the walk-ups?

Also, what was the winning weights for the bass and halibut divisions? It was a little hard to hear over the crowd noise.

Thanks!

The weights and totals are in the other forum. Great turnout and thanks to everyone for a great experience. Also looking forward to the next HOW event.

Surprisingly we only tied last year in the final number of sign ups at 120. We surpassed our goal of raising $5000 and then Geo Group and Eric Noonan added $5000 on top of that!
