So the Iceman PM's me yesterday and says he is thinking about hitting San O this morning. Looked like it was going to be warm with no surf so I said sure Got there just before the gates opened and rigged the kayaks. I said that I was going to paddle to the San Mateo Kelp because that is where the DP half day boats are picking up onesie twosies YT fairly consistently. Paddled the 2.5 miles out there, paddled around the area for another mile or so, followed the kelp back down the line to in front of the domes for another 2 miles and then back into shore for another mile. All por nada. Decided to fish the gulp grub 200 yards from the truck and this old girl came out to play.

I called it 25 lbs when I landed it but read just a shade over 30 on both a spring scale and a digital, including the game clip. 11 feet of water just outside the surf line but there was no surf.

Good fishin with ya! I would have offered to take a "better" photo, but it looked like you had it stowed inside when you paddled over. I stuck it out for another 1/2 hour por nada. Nice fish!

Awesome flatty!
I was out diving on Sunday, but the water was chocolate milk so couldn't see any flatties, but glad they are finally making their way back!

I fished gulp most of my first year on a yak, and only managed one legal Hali that i can remember. That is pretty impressive.

I am a real believer in the gulp grubs. Every one of my 30 + lb halibut have come on the gulp. Just in the half hour that I fished the shallows I caught 2 keeper sand bass, a juvi WSB, had about a 10 or 12 pound butt follow it to the yak and of course the subject of this post

Very nice flattie. Need to dig out my neglected gulp grubs and give them a try. Good thing you caught it nearshore and didn't paddle all those miles with that extra weight.
