Anyone from LA area fish over here lately? Some dude got a YT on a SUP this past weekend on the yoyo. If you know this area, let me know if you know of some spots to launch from. Don't want to kill myself. Thanks guys

I havent fished there lately, but they have been catching fish there all summer long....as far as launch spots...you answered your own question....county line and leo carillo.
And as far as not killing yourself....leo carillo is much easier but further away. Youll be launching and landing in a boulder field just so you know. Dont crash!

They have been killing them all summer . The fishing probably hasn't been this good since the fiftys , before man invented the fishing reel . :D. But I really would not know because I have not caught jack :yt:there all year long . I was building my confidence farther down south at Lj , when they were right here in my back yard . :toetap05:.

I just need some squid colored jigs!

Speaking from experience: I live in Norwalk, County Line is about half the distance of LJ but the drive takes just as long or longer. I recall one weekend when it took me over 2hrs to get home, 2hrs to go 60miles.............:auto:

Oh Damn, thanks for the heads up. The drive back from LJ has been 2 hrs on average for me. So sounds like there isn't much of a benefit to go over there, unless it's just biting better

Fishing malibu is always good, but having to deal with PCH is a heart ache all the time and it doesn't mean you will catch anything either.

Launching at County Line can be a little challenging espically if the surf is on the larger side. Head out to the 180' mark and a little N/W of Neptune's Net. There should be some boats anchored up there. Heard the white jig was working best. Yes the fishing has been the best it has been since I can remember. There used to be a bunch of home guards in the Malibu area in th 70's. We would troll for them with broken back Rapala's. I would take some squid too. Watch on the landing too as the waves break quite a distance from the beach. If you are on FB look for George Clout. Spends a lot of time there and usually has a report if he is not surfing.

Thank you MrPukaShell, this is the kind of Intel I was hoping for. Looking online I saw all the rocks and wasn't sure where everyone launches from.
That guy that got his yt on the sup was using a white jig, so I figured that would be the way to go. I got a yellow and white, might try that out.

Sil,
If you get there early enough there is a dirt road that leads down to the beach that you can park next to. I think it is the life guard access. Anyway it is an easy way down to the water. I have always launched on the southern end but you will just have to see what the waves are doing. Heard the surf was going to be on the larger side this weekend so check your favorite surf report. I would stow your gear on the way out and on the way back in. Broke two poles there a couple of weeks back, lesson learned the hard way.

get there early. in my experience the wide open bites happen right around sunrise, and shut off shortly thereafter. doesn't mean they can't be caught later in the morning... but it does seem to slow down quite a bit.
frozen squid on dropper loops and various jigs ought to get it done.

lived 10 min from leo/county for 20 yrs and honestly never fished it, or anywhere in malibu for that matter, at least from a kayak. Now that I live in san diego I wish I was up there. But if I had to launch from anywhere Id park in the lot at leo carillo down the cliff from the actual county line. You will enter like youre going to the campgrounds, but you will go back under pch, then past the lifeguard tower then north and down to the beac. Might be a bit of a paddle though and youll prob have to pay.

For any easy launch park on pch just east of the leo camp ground entrance south side of the street there are a small set of wood stairs and its free but if you have to balls launch out of couty line but store ur gear like they mentioned I consider both of these spots as my local spots fish them a lot oh and also bring heavy weights if fishing bait if current is ripping you need 12-16 oz to stay on the bottom irons works awesome to got all mine there this year on irons good luck wear your PFD and wait for the lull in the sets

Squid have been there for a while. The light boats had been hammering them for weeks, but they must have got their quota, cuz they are gone now. I haven't been able to make any squid for bait, but it hasnt been needed. Dead works just fine. Last few times I didn't bother bringing a sabiki or squid jig with me.
The WSB bite never materialized like it did the past two summers (and any summers before then). They are around, and being caught here and there... but YT have definitely taken over.

Yeah the WSB fishing was epic those two years. Buddy and I would go almost every weekend, and limited out each time. Smallest was probably 25#

I don't know how much experience you have... IF you have none or very little, I can say for sure that County line is not a place for you. Not trying to keep you or any one else away...but it is without a doubt dangerous. Just try'n to save you some pain. Otherwise have fun out there!

I appreciate your concern for sure. Is the danger due to swell?
Everything on my boat stashes or lashes. I swim just about every time I fish so no worries with re-entry. That and I surf so I'm no stranger to navigating waves (and taking a few on the head every now and again).
I fish Newport and Long Beach mostly and have been wanting to explore north of PV. I am certainly lacking experience in that sense. What would your suggestion be for no hassle launching in the area?
Thanks!

The surf can be really really big at county, when its big and your out there...your gonna be sorry you were ever born. So if your hell bent on getting out there pick your day wisely and come back in as soon as the weather/swell starts to look bad..otherwise you might pay the price. Leo Carrillo is an easier launch but is covered in rocks and boulders.... so if you crash there...you'll be sorry, in more ways than one.
You have to have some sort of launch and landing experience before you go otherwise a mistake can cost you, and even if you have experience you can still crash and get fucked up.
be careful

Looks like same type of surf for both places on Sunday except county waves have more speed and power. If your not used to having great timing you WILL get caught. Been launching here for 3 years and I only go on the calmest of days.
Good luck, but don't push your luck. Leo is easier and as long as you launch around high tide you will avoid all the rocks. Only on real low tide will you have issues with rocks. It's only a 20 Minute paddle to county anyhow.

And yet there you are making fun of the guys that have fished the MALIBU area for over a decade like your superior or cool. Either fish it or don't. Report it or don't. Don't be keyboard warriors and talk tough mocking the locals and being hypocrites yourselves. Yeah, maybe some of you have done well the past 1,2,3 years you have been Kayakfishing. That's because the fishing has been good. The guys who have been Kayakfishing a long time are probably more protective of their spots because they have stuck with it even through years and years of bad fishing. They also stuck with it without having these little forums to pat themselves on the back and brag about what great fisherman they supposedly are. So the next time you want to fish MALIBU just do it instead of making yourselves look like ignorant newbs yourselves by posting stupid comments like the above^

Whenever I run into a newb like you guys at county I always try to help them if they have a good attitude and vibe. Ask guys like Roku for example. He's on this forum and other guys to. But they are like you guys above talking smack before you even experience it. Then your stinking attitude gets you stinking attitude back. there's a reason why some of the old timers that have been fishing that area for up to over 20 years don't welcome some people with open arms. It's not just the big mouths but the stupid attitudes like the comments above from guys that only fish when catching is easy and act like their name if ducking Neptune. That is all!

Awwwwe.... shucks it must really suck being you. You are just so sensitive, well meaning, and sentimental.
I heard they closed down your favorite Malibu only message board and then tossed the archives. My condolences. Huge loss. Must be hard to be a big fish in a small pond without the pond.
Vandalize any trucks lately? A man of your stature needs to keep active in the community. Must be nice to be able bash some people here for just mentioning Malibu with disrespect!! Kinda like the good ole days, and for you it's probably a great way to generate some sense of purpose and a little continued self importance.
So how's fishing? Been kicking any Malibu butt? I don't want to brag but I'll tell you between you and I that repower of my skiff has been fantastic. Great fuel economy. Nice to fish the old Bu without worrying about traffic or parking.

This site was awesome back in the day. But when the local San Diego guys stopped posting and the L.A kooks took over, it brought a tear to my eye. Sorry if my opinion angers anyone, but it's just an opinion.
Does anyone even go to the malibu kayak site anymore?
i think this is the only awesome website that still lives, most people just go to facebook or instagram now, people even make fake username to talk about how not so awesome this site is...

Malibu is nothing but nice guys. I've always been treated with courtesy and respect. When I posted my rare catches I would receive high fives and kudos from the "local" guys. They were excited to know that timely posts were bringing new kayakers to their area which would enhance the experience for all of us.
Don't mess with the boo.
P.s. WSB are being taken in LJ right now.

I don't recall anyone coming on this site and saying, 'Get out! We're taking over!'. If they did you're a sissy for running. Not looking to pick a fight with anyone but if internet bashing is going to piss you off enough so that you stop posting you've got some serious issues, grow a pair and stand your ground. Stop acting like a bunch of high school girls, act your age and you'll get along just fine.

You mean like this?
Post 1. Says Malibu is dangerous with "winds between 50 and 90 mph" and Newbies should not fish there.
Post 2. (new thread) Tells people not to talk about Malibu, then posts a series of personal attacks towards someone that did which were ultimately removed (edited by BWE; 06-19-2011 at 10:21 PM. Reason: Cleaned up offensive stuff)
Post 3. Links to the same series of offensive personal attacks directed at the same person reposted on another board (Jason Morton's "Kayaksportfishing") where they could not be edited by BWE.
Post 4. A post defending his right to attack the same poster based on ridiculous claims about the posters web history.
Post 5. A post attacking the same poster... claims that the poster "exposes bites" that people hate it and that it's "harmful to the fishery". Joined by "Klutz" (first post, new account) who says: "Just do to the fact that you keyboardaholics would respond to this stupid post in the first place, makes you look like whining babies ,shut up and quit crying bout your past " (thread closed by BWE)
Post 6. (new tread) An offtopic rant (the thread is about the webcam) claims that sharing info online ruins fishing. Says he doesn't participate on boards by choice. Brings up Jason Morton's "Kayaksportfishing", Sato's "Baytubers" and BWE and says that people who openly post info on open boards are doing the fishery a disservice and that those the use the boards for info are selfish leaches. quote "Only the most selfish type person would want some one to do the work for them"
Post 7. (same thread) Claims that sharing info creates "parking lot" conditions and people who share info are "..... trying to create a frenzy of over crowding"
Post 8. (same thread) Justifies his above attacks
Post 9. (new thread) Attacks a regular poster for posting a halibut catch video and suggests that he's a legend in his own mind.
Post 10. (same thread) Compares current posters to older kayak dudes and says the new posters are simply: "strangers posting reports and opinions" and that they need to think about how much they "participate" online.
Post 11. (same thread) continues with the "my old time kayak friends are better fishermen than you guys" theme.
Post 12. (same thread) calls The Original poster a "namecaller"
Post 13. Tells a Newbie that he's going to get fined a $1000 for mistaking a Cabazon for a Sculpin.
Post 14. Gripes about the unfairness of West Coast Whoppers.
Post 15. Attacks a poster who criticizes the small minded negative locals only mentality, and who thanks BWE for allowing people to share info. (post removed by BWE)
Post 16. (Same thread) Attacks BWE for censorship, defends the right to attack others, says: "Your members are men, if some people are bullying them, they can stand up for themselves." Says all points of view are worth reading, and decries the process of banning negative posters.
Post 17. This ones a good one, someone posted about a 40lb fish caught at Malibu (epic county line bite) others asked about it and he tells them to go elsewhere. quote: "Why would they bother driving 3 hours to Malibu? With white sea bass being caught from Punta Baja to Monterey,Ca. Seems pointless..."
Post 18. (same thread) Attacks a poster for suggesting Malibu is worth fishing, directs others to fish Redondo.
Post 19. (same thread) Says the good areas in Malibu are closed.
Post 20. A regular long term poster puts up a report then asks for some current info, he blasts them.
Post 21. Tells a poster he doesn't know how to fish.
Post 22. Blasts a LJ yellow report, says reports here are ruining fishing.
It just goes on and on....
After that you have maybe dozen or more posts (38 total) all on this same basic theme: Don't fish Malibu, don't share info, and that he has the right to attack people who do, and that it was better in the good old days when just he and his buddies kayak fished, and that the internet has ruined fishing. Klutz his alter ego joins in to add a few of the real nasty comments, but that's probably just him using more then one account. This has been going on for over half a decade, and when you consider the vandalism, and the actual personal altercations that have happened at launch sites in Malibu during the same time frame and it's pretty clear who this person is and what their agenda is.
The Irony is this guy is not even a real Malibu resident just someone who's fished there for a long time and now feels somehow entitled. The sad thing is it's poisoned the well for so many fisherman in regards to Malibu, which is honestly one of the coolest local areas to fish, and an area that technically belongs to every one of us.

Well said Jim!
The irony is the same people that complain about fishing forums (intended to promote and share in a community setting) are the same people that LURK and are on the site the most... That my friend is one definition of delusional..
The more I fish elsewhere the more I love Malibu.. I have met and made many friends just by chatting at the launch or on the water.. A simple hello, or help to load kayaks goes a long way.. Heck even get a helping hand from the local surfers when I'm solo..

But hey, if I ever see you at the launch, I'll offer to help unload or load your yak; that's just the type of guy I am.
