Com on Zed, don't scare off any would-be jackpot contributors, I plan to launch and land without any surfing involved. 2-3 footers SHOULD be cake. :D

I am manning the grill and will raise the ante with Wanda's world renown decadent brownies.

If you are worried about the surf, bring some surf fishing stuff just in case. If it is as good a forecast as stated, get there 5:30-5:45 latest to make sure you get in. $15 parking, so car pool if you want to save some money.

Too short notice for me. Andy, you know that 2' - 3' will make for some interesting landings ;) :D   ...

GregAndrew
01-14-2015, 03:09 PM
NOAA Marine forecast has W and S swells at 1' and wind less than 5mph for Sun. A minus tide at landing time should also be good for killing the surf there, but be ready to walk your yak in over the reef. And land with your drive out, unless you have it rigged weedless :D.

GregAndrew

And a few days before the new moon could be very interesting out there :D.

There seems to be yellows all up and down the coast in the 200 to 300ft range. Newport is killing them just south of the harbor. Half day out of Dana had a dozen today and they can't make the box on a half day. Seaforth had 90 today.

SorryCharlie
01-15-2015, 07:56 AM
The dana boats have been catching yellows along the entire stretch from the SC pier down to Box canyon in 200-300 ft.

I really want to try and hit it, but from what I heard it is all metered schools they stop on, so it may require some serious ground coverage. Also, a definite surf launch. I am interested in making the shorter run to Box canyon to see if they are still around in reasonable numbers there.

Zed
01-15-2015, 08:57 AM
That "Box Canyon" area is a good hour plus commute from the launch. Probably more. Getting out to 50ftm straight out from SanO is still pretty far, maybe half to 45min. Lots of options. Dont want to sway anyone since theres $$$ and smack at stake.

Im in but still undecided on menu.

There are certainly nice fish as close as the surf there. Paddle to the right depth, for YT, is going to be about the same as the NW Corner at LJ. Then you need to find em. A group spanned out, looking for baitballs might be just the ticket. First guy has to play his fish till the others converge though lol.

Maybe rossman can get steevoo to give up his halibut spot for the rest of us....

rossman
01-15-2015, 11:08 AM
That might be a little underestimated Greg. I have a spot just outside the last kelp almost straight out from the launch and it is 2.25 miles from the launch and the area where the squid were last year is . 5 to..75 miles beyond that and you are still less than 75 ft of water. Not sure of the distance to the NW corner but I would estimate less than 2 miles. But like you said lots of options. I finished last year with a 30 pound flatty less than 200 yards from the truck. Really going to be interesting to see what this group comes up with.

Nice! this is shaping up like a master class :D 2-3 foot surf never seems to look the same from day to day, but the cool thing about San O is there is not a lot of punch in the waves there unless it is a huge day, especially at Old Man's where we launch and land.

As soon as Basilone Rd. narrows to one lane, take the next right. If you see a line of cars at the stop sign, turn right and go to the end of the line. If no line, then straight thru the stop sign to the gate. Follow the road past the millitary campsite all the way to the South end of the dirt parking lot.

Damn, I really overestimated the distance to the NW Corner didn't I lol. Must be because of the South bound current that is always going when I come back from there.

Son o isn't that bad and am is so easy it's like glass in the morning. there are two sets of waves and its all about timing I'll get out just past the first set and then paddle left in between the two breaks and then when its clear I just paddle out...really 2'/3' isn't bad for San o...

On another note if I'm able to go how much is it to play?
Jackpot? And what can I bring potluck? I'm 85% sure I can go..

Sorry guys cant make it for any fishing, but I will try to stop by to say hello.

A buddy (yakhanded) and I headed out of San o today, so thought you guys might appreciate a quick report.

Launch wasn't to bad, some shore break/surge but it is time-able. If you drag your kayak down south 50-100 yards it should be easier. Once we got past the shore break we had a strait shot out.

We headed to Box canyon, and where the fish are being caught right now was about 5-6 miles from the launch..... long paddle, but we got there and there was at least 30-40 boats, with about 5 cattle boats. Cattle boats were catching on metered schools, but it was picking (one or two stops the cattle boats made did result in 5+ hook-ups almost instantly). Yakhanded hooked up, but sadly it was not ment to be.... A few possible bites, but nothing landed. Some private boats were connecting off the cattle boats, basically if they moved a mass of boats followed.

Conditions were awesome, a bit of wind in the morning, but that died and it was amazing out there.

YT are possible tomorrow if you want to make to voyage!

Went out monday on Sum Fun and we got about 60 yellowtail (I got two on dropper loop in about 200' - all about 20-25 pounds. It would have been a long paddle, about 2-3 miles, but there were lots of fish. Boat moved until fish were metered, then we dropped.

Wish I could go. Should be a great day.

Sounds like it was fun out there! I went somewhere else, and just got a lingcod.

How packed was it on the boat? I'm scheduled to go Saturday with a friend who got a trip from his gf for a Bday present, but I'm worried he might not have a first good experience if the boat is shoulder to shoulder. ESPECIALLY when you got multiple yt hookups. Then again I've seen three tangled before and still landed.

Think I might stick to 6x, it's more fun!

Just a heads up the cattle boats (both dana and Oside) were close to full, if not full loads. It should still be fun, but I did hear the captains yelling at a few people on deck about moving with fish and losing them because they didn't. Seemed like the people who knew to follow the fish were landing them (the cattle boats would come within 20 yards of us, so we could see and hear everything, even the screams of FRESH ONE).

I have a feeling the thing that will piss you off the most if the PB's, because they would get within 20 yards of the cattle boats everytime they stopped. When the fury would move there was a group of at least 10 boats slowly chasing after them.

One a side note, what was the winning fish from Sunday???!!!!!

On a side note, what was the winning fish from Sunday???!!!!!

Surprisingly no body brought in any fish to weigh. Greg released a 28 inch halibut. Andy made the long run for YT with Vince and Andy said he had one bait get crushed and heard a few guys hollering hook ups out there.

I still have the jackpot winnings in my pocket and have decided to raffle off a Fisherman PFD to one of the 14 that attended.

it was a full load on the Dana Point trip about 50 anglers. I was worried, but all was good and the crew was great. Hope the yellowtail hang around til saturday.

The boats off SanO today (monday) were pretty scattered - not a good sign.
