JUST in from Brandon, YakDout
regarding gonzaga
That Oct weather was too perfect for me to pass up this year BOB. Regardless if I make it down to abreojos in august I am in for any trip to gonzaga bay in the month of october. And if there is no trip set up yet, I propose a Trip down to your paradise. I know that Mike will be in and Im sure you will easily fill the rest. October 17-24 is what I propose. What do you think? Already anticipating our conversations about baja while drinking a pacifico at your paradise.
Last year this trip produced 100 fish days, Rooster fish, and one lucky [good] guy got 30 tails one day. Dorado too.
This trip will be from 17-24 October and I might stay a few extra days to hit the full moon on the 27th.
ALL ABOARD!!!

You are officially on the list for this trip. Last year WAS epic. With the warm waters this year should be even better. Stock up on your Crocks and big deep running repalas. And do not forget your wire leaders as the big sierra will cut you off in a heart beat. You might not even feel the strike, just lure be gone.

I have 4-5 of each of the Rapalas & in different colors, they're part of my LR multi-day trip kits. I'll have to check into large Crocs.
I assume the same wire for Wahoo [single strand (48#+) and multi-strand] will work for these trips?

1 oz or 1.5 oz crocs work fine. Other that my 49lb WSB I caught on a 2 oz croc I haven't had as much luck with the large crocs.
My best advise it to bring lot of them with a least 24" to 36" wire leaders
Those sierra were a blast but they took a lot of my silver/chrome

My experience is the fish bite on anything and everything in Baja.
If you have a set up that you're really comfortable throwing jigs and own several jigs, bring that, you'll do well.
If on other hand you use swimmers like rapala, waxwings etc, bring that set up and use it. You'll have a 100 fish day.
If the fly is what you excel with, you can't lose.
What I'm trying to say is, "fish the same way, same rig, same technique, and same lures that works best for you here, and you have unbelievable days there".
Last year I made five lures from metal crate straps, and lost all but one to fish. They were crummy workmanship and looked awful. Just get your favorite type of lure in the water and hold on to your rod.
Do it your way and you'll have excellent days with sore arms. Then you'll have plenty of time to rest your arms from all that pulling while learning a new technique from others down there with you.

The entire trip will cost you 200 or less if you share gas costs and it will be fishing that you can not come close to anywhere in San Diego.
The last trip in October last year was a once in a lifetime trip for those lucky to go last year.
Just ask them how good it was and you probably will not believe it.

I get that, the thing is im a full time college student with no job, i work over summers and that lasts me. What i need to save up for instead happens this summer and idk how much it will cost yet. If i have enough for both, great, if not then i dont want to hold a spot that someone else could have.

Makobob, I sent you a pm, but I might as well post on the thread as well. I realize I am brand new to the board, but I would love, love, love to get in on this if there is still room. Makobob, you just described me to a tee, as my wife will be undergoing IVF this Fall, and well, this will be my last shot at something this epic for a while (hopefully not 10 years though!). I realize I'm the new guy, so here's my introduction--fishing machine but I have a lot to learn regarding kayak fishing, armed with both conventional and fly, fully bilingual (y enamorado de mexico), and a team player first and foremost.
If there's still room, this trip would be a dream come true. And reading the various posts and highlights from last year, this really seems like a great group of guys. Not to sound too desparate, but I'm willing to be submit to any drug or psychological testing if necessary :biggrinjester:

I would like to split gas with someone that has a truck that can fit two kayaks. Also I can go for 7 to 10 days but would rather not miss two weekends in a row due to a lot of my work being on the weekends.
So I can go October 17-23 coming back on a Friday or
October Monday 12 and stay for 7 to 10 days or
October Monday 19 and stay for 7 to 10 days.
So basically I am open as long as I don't miss two weekends in a row.

MrPukaShell messaged me a while back and took my offer to split gas. So unless anything has changed on his end he will be riding in my truck. Hopefully he will reply here. As far as the dates buddha, my schedule is completely opposite yours. I am mon-fri. Not to say we can't be flexible on the dates, but I will be missing more work if we are there more days during the week. This is all if I dont switch jobs in the next couple months. I have an interview with the city of Hemet coming up on May 6th for a building inspector position, so vacation time will definitely be affected somehow. Even if I don't get this job, I am still actively searching to get in somewhere as a building inspector Full time in the next couple months. At least October is still really far out. :reel:

MakoBob, thanks for taking the time for talking to me last night, and for finding a way to work me into the Oktoberfiesta, I can't wait.
I got my first taste of GB (as well as Baja kayak fishing) a few weeks ago staying at Alfonsina's. As I paddled in at dusk on my last day, battle-weary arms aching from fighting fish, soaking in the horizon ablaze with orange and red, utterly exhausted but profoundly at peace, I realized that this place, and specifically this activity, had become a part of my soul. My mission now is to keep coming back as many times as possible while I can still draw breath.
I'm a novice to kayak fishing and I look forward to learning from everyone here at BWE as I embark on the journey from beginner to seasoned veteran.
I think it will be a good journey.

YakDout and mako are right.
I for one have traveled the Baja peninsula 6-12 times a year since 1966. I have tent-camped in some desolate spots, as well as in a VW Westfalia, motorcycle, a variety of Jeeps and cars, several RVs, and the last 8 years traveling in a Toyota FJ Cruiser. I have been more fearful of our own CBP agents at the US border than the Mexican population in Baja.
The trouble spots are all in the mainland, and they never include tourists. Although the last couple of months there has been some drug trade violence in La Paz (the dealers seemed to have found a quiet place to live, but their trouble has caught up to them), but it has been localized in one area. Just as the drug violence in Tijuana has been localized to one square mile area.
Hell, you have more people getting killed on a daily basis in the Los Angeles area, than all of Baja. And even though the latest trouble area is La Paz, I would not hesitate to visit the area, or have second thoughts about living there...it is such a gorgeous place.
On a footnote to all of you who are on the fence about traveling to Baja: I monitor on a daily basis several Baja bulletin boards and blogs, including www.bajanomad.com which is the best board for up-to-date travel information.
My personal e-mail is udowinkler@yahoo.com if any of you wish to contact me about travels and roads in any Baja area.
Hate to say it man but if that's you're thinking then you may never be able to enjoy Baja. Regardless of vacation time...

Trip dates are still set for October 17th-24th.
I however will have to be returning on Wednesday October 21st. I am taking over a week off in August to visit and fish Punta Abreojos so I will need to work that thursday and friday when I am back from Gonzaga. Robert (aka MrPukaShell) may want someone to carpool with for the full trip duration. I leave that up to him to contact another one of you on the trip if my dates are too short for him. Really wish I could stay the full 7 days but I will be slammed with work. The way Bob likes to do dinners is alternate nights so we will keep it simple and continue the same way. Its makes it easier for everyone as we do not have to use the grill for everyones individual dinner every night of the trip. Below will be a list of everyone I currently have on the trip as well as dates for dinners. BTW everyone is pretty much on their own for breakfast and lunch. Not a huge ordeal as the fishing was so awesome last year at this time, I usually had a very small breakfast and skipped lunch. Fishing is more important than eating. :reel:

Please let me know if I have forgotten anyone or if anyone has changed their mind etc.. I will edit the list of people going as well as dinner dates. Please if you are a for sure go pick a date that is not taken yet for dinner. Keep in mind you are cooking for the whole camp. Could be 8 guys could be 4. We will have a better count soon. Also if you have any questions as to what to bring, or anything at all, Post here so we can get them answered. THIS IS A TRIP OF A LIFETIME.
Saturday October 17th
Sunday October 18th Yakdout
Monday October 19th
Tuesday October 20th
Wednesday October 21st
Thursday October 22nd
Friday October 23rd
Home on the 24th
This trip is very inexpensive especially if sharing fuel costs and I highly recommend getting Insurance on your vehicle for the trip. www.bajabound.com is the site that I use. It is a good piece of mind to have. Also Bob will be collecting some $ for the water we will use for showers and toilets and since I do not know the current state of his place after getting a new septic tank, he will let us all know how much it will be per person.
Can't wait to make some more memories down there!

My maybe will be more toward a definite, if I can ride share.
Spanish speaking person would be great, but looks like we will be going in a group, so may not be needed.
I don't mind driving, its just that I have one rack for kayak on my 4Runner.
I will have more questions if I am going, but I will ask later.
I will pay for dinner at the local restaurant, since I am not much of a cook.

I do, however, need someone to carpool with. We can split gas in my F250 but I would prefer to chip in on gas with someone that has a vehicle that is more fuel efficient.

Not sure if 4Runner has a better gas millage. My concern is room for the second kayak. If someone else can bring your kayak, then we can car pool in mine.

if you guys have never met Hashem, you should! He's a great guy and used to show me around SoCal whenever I was down there. If I could find the time off work I'd drive all the way down from Norcal to make this trip.
Hashem is a Cowboys fan though, so there's at least one knock against him :)

Buddha that is a generous offer I'd like to take you up on :cheers1:. I'm willing to work in the kitchen doing grunt work/cleaning, etc. If you are still good with the offer, then give me a list of groceries to buy/bring, and people won't have to suffer through my cooking :p.

I set trip up for the 17th-24th. Room for two with yaks and gear. Restuarant deal will cost you $5.00 per head set up, you provide the meat/fish and everyone pays for their own drinks. Riding with me will cost you 1/2 to 1/3 of the fuel cost, about $100 or less round trip.

These are the people I show as being in on this trip. Help an old man out, If I missed you please let me know you soonest, if you cannot go please let me know so others might take your spot.
As to Hashem's questions. Hashem and Gr8ful will meet me at my house no later than 3:30 am on the morning of 17 October, The rest will meet us at Johnnys Shell station in El Cajon no later than 5am. 693 Hillside terrace #5a, Vista 92084, is my address. Johnnys shell is at 67 and N. Magnolia ave 515 N. Magnolia in El Cajon just off of the 8. There is off street parking for Hashem ang Gr8ful at my place.
We will not be stoping for pesos. Your USD will spend in Baja but the rate might sufferso if you want pesos you need to get them before the trip.
Once we get to my place the nearest place to buy anything is in Gonzaga about 10 miles by road, so you need to bring everything you need. We usually make 2-3 ice runs during the trip. They do have water, soda, beer but at a preimum.
If you want to vacuum bag that is up to you. Usually the first half of the trip we only keep fish for meals. The last half we keep fish to come home. Bring lots of bags as others will want to use your bagger too.
Buying groceries on the way is a no go. You will be taking fishing time from everyone. Get everything you need before leaving San Diego.
WE are 95 miles from electrical power. My generator is large enough for our needs. Bring a POWER STRIP and your chargers. Power is usually run late afternoon until bed time.
Bathrooms???? this is Baja so the restroom in quaint, flush toilet, and shower, not hot and cold. Thereare also the same at thr resturant and he rents palaps for $30 a night with room for 3-4 people which includes showers and toilet. If we eat at the restraunt and bring the meat they will charge $5.00 per person for cooking plus rice, beans whatever they have, salsa tortillas. You pay for your own drinks.
As to fish. We do not kill Roster fish, PLEASE. Totuava will land you in a mexican jail as will turtles. Best eating fish are YT, cabrilla, bass ,WSB, snapper, dorado and triggers for cevechi. Bait we usually do not bring, it is up to you but really not needed. Making bait in not usually productive, but.............................Hope this helps, as to bedding I have extra cots but they are old. I use a cot and sleeping bay, sleeping on the ground is not good. Snakes, scorpions, bugs. Usually space inside for cot and bag. Some use the camprite tent cot. Some use a tent. Your choice, just remember three of us will be traveling in one truck, so if you dont need it leave it home. BRING enough fishing tackle, there are no tackle stores. Crockodiles, Iron, cast masters, repalas and lead heads and plastics. Make sure your rods, reels, drags are ready. Hope this answers your questions. Tight lines.

I think the best thing you can do is to bring a cooler and bring the meats and veggies with you. I can cook the first or early days for you so that the food will still be fresh. Just PM me on what you want me to cook for you and I will tell you what to buy.
I would recommend wheeleez carts.

I will bring a chaise lounge/ sleeping bag. A tent for backup. I may consider sleeping in Palaps. Will have to see.

Q: I know about the very reasonable fee for the domestic water usage. What are the bathroom arrangements?
I have a PORTO-PRIVY tent that can be used for privacy. It folds small.

Q: Can you list the fish that is not allowed to be kept in Mexico? I know the daily bag limit is five (5) fish of the same species for the total of ten (10) Dorado has a limit of two (2).I can post a complete regulation, but it does not indicate what species are protected.
Catch and release for me, except if needed for meals. Will learn to ID fish like Totuava.

Q: Do you take any bait from US? Is that allowed?
I may take a secret bait for sheephead, if they are a possible catch.

Q: Should I bring a kayak cart? Regular or Wheeleze?<O:p</O:p
Bob has Wheeleze cart for use. He will let us know how it works out.

Q: Are sharks and sea lions a problem with regards to hanging fish on the side of kayak?
It is recommended to keep the fish in the kayak under a wet towel or burlap.
Bob, I will bring what I think I would need and you can decide how much of it can go in your truck. Rest can stay in my SUV. Thanks for the information provided.

P.S. How can I prevent the icons (ffic http://www.bigwatersedge.com/bwevb/images/icons/icon11.gifoffice, >>) from showing up each time I post?

I have a wheeleze cart, it can be shared, also with the new 4x4 hope to load 3-4 yaks and drive to Punto Buefeo and just drop them in. Saves 1.25 mile paddle both ways. I will be trying this out in september on another trip.

On October 15, 2012 , I did a similar trip to Baja. This was on the Pacific side and we used a boat for fishing.ffice:office" />
There was a four room motel that I stayed for one night before we left. Picture #122. It was a great improvement to sleeping in the truck. Picture #121
I am all for “roughing it” if needed, but having a good night sleep can help toward preventing seasickness among other things.

If anybody wants to share a Palaps please let me know. That way I can reduce my gear on Bob’s truck.
I do snore, but I can bring my CPAP machine providing there is electricity available all night.

Here is the link to that trip. It is picture heavy with a lot of information.

Order your tackle NOW, been a good year and some tackle is out of stock so get it on order or find replacements for it soon. Hashem, yes there are sharks and Sea lions in the area. I store my fish on back deck covered by a wet towel or gunny sack. I learned YEARS AGO not to put them over the side. NIGHTMARES. Yes I have a rack on my truck.
BTW I dream of Baja most nights, it is food for the soul, almost like being in church or on the water.

Before I went to my first GTG at Avalon in 2006, to meet and fish with a group of anglers that I met on line, I could not sleep for two nights.
I still get excited when I decide to go, but not as much. I will be there this weekend for two days and one night of non-stop fishing at the Cabrillo Mole.

since there are teethy fish in the bay, do you always use steel leader, or only switch when you start seeing the mean guys?
Most of the fish do not require steel leaders, but the ones that do, really do.
Never. I go until I have no more leader left then just straight tie spectra.

I got back this afternoon. Bass, triggers, cabrilla, corvina, Sierra, roosters, needlefish, seen or caught........ 3 GROUPER to 200lbs caught last week at island. Taxman was NOT to be scene. Whale shark and turtles hanging around. Yt and dorado seen in area. Also Skippies. You just never know, water temps were 88 degrees and winds were less than 10mph wind temps 85 low at night 105 high. Tight lines, Disney Land trip is coming soon, tight lines.
Roberto thanks for an awesome weekend! I had a blast, even in the 107 degree heat, even though I got part of thumb chewed off by a triggerfish. Can't wait for October, super stoked to fish the big island. One plan is to take a panga to the big island in the a.m., fish all day and camp out there, then have the panga pick us up the next afternoon. Should be absolutely epic!!!
Other possibilities beckon--chase yellowtail in Gonzaga proper, fish the pristine waters of Punta Final. I think my head is about to explode!

Are the Pangas big enough to take;
kayaks,
fishing gears,
camping gears,
cooler/s and passengers?
Or does he make several trips?
Do we sleep under sky or in a tent?

The island is San Luis Gonzaga and it is about 4.5 miles from my place.
As to what to take to the island less is always better. Take just what you need.

That's a good question. For an overnight trip, I'm thinking I bring the kayak, a couple of rods, small box of lures, sleeping bag (no tent but maybe a lightweight tarp in case of unexpected rain), water (2 gallons/per person?), and food for two days.
I doubt there'd be room (or need) for a cooler, but I guess that depends on how many people go. I'll probably pack like I'm backpacking (every ounce counts and not taking anything that isn't absolutely ESSENTIAL). I may bring my jet boil with some oil/spices to cook fish.
I'm not taking anything I couldn't carry on my kayak to paddle back to the mainland in case our ride back doesn't show up :svengo:

A panga will not fit kayaks

I gather the kayaks will be towed here.
I have seen it inside the Panga at Cedros Island pictures. No overnight camping there.
According to Bob, it is best NOT to sleep on the floor, especially if you are not in a tent. Little critters, you know.
I think being the first time, I will pass on the Panga trip.

I have been watching various YouTube videos of this kayaker---Cornish Shore and Kayak Fisherman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5nveCDPqsE
In the above video which is quite informative, he says that in order to operate a VHF radio, a one day course must be taken.
Is that a requirement for US, or maybe where he is in England?
What about Mexico?
It has been a while since I read the manual and I will look at again.
Anybody have any information on this?

I think you are confusing VHF radio (marine) with HAM radios. Ham operators require a class to operate HAM

Thanks for clarification, I am aware of the differences, that is why it surprised me and I thought I ask.
He has sent me a reply saying he does not think I need one here, but for me to check locally to be sure.

I'm making my first trip to Gonzaga with a buddy. Do we need licenses to fish on the shore, kayak or float tube?
