Allright so I'm looking at getting a phenix abyss 9 foot rod
I have been trying to come up with a great reel to pair it With for casting surface irons.. but no buddy I know has the reels I have been looking at. What are your guys thoughts on the reel that should be on here.. will get something like 40lb braid with a 30 lb leader.
I was looking a turium but can't seam to find one to mess with. I like star drags with a clicker that's a plus for me

I like my saltist 35 h, but i use it between all my rods. I have it spooled with 65 pound braid, not because you need the strength. I dont always backlash, but when i do i usually

I paired my abyss with a tranx, then later swap to a lexa 400. Both will do nicely if your a lover of baitcaster reels. Smooth and nice controls on your cast.

I have the same rod and paired it with a Trini 16n. Casted great but the Trini was way too much for that light rod. After hearing great reviews I'm planning on putting a lexa 400 on it. If you want a round reel the Seagate 35 might be good. Old school, but a Newell 332 or super narrow 322 would be amazing on that rod. Seriously. Plenty of drag for a rod of that line rating, super light, and IMO Newell's are still the best casting reels ever made. Damn, I'm talking myself in to a Newell 322 now. Mike.

I still fish with a hot rodded Jigmaster for surface irons. But a newer similar sized reel is probably the better choice. The taller spool combined with a moderately fast ratio allows me to gain in line quickly on the hook set as well as "catch up" if the fish heads straight in.
As far as line I prefer 40# test minimum. Its a reaction bite so no need to be stealthy with line size. Straight mono or long wind on of it as well. I don't like mono to braid connections going thru the guide train on a cast so a wind on of at least the length of my furthest cast. Also mono gives you some stretch which for me helps avoid pulled hooks. I back my mono with 80# braid. If a fish does take me to my backing the thickness of 80# braid will keep from digging into itself.

Have you looked at coffee grinders? Perhaps the Penn Spinfisher V SSV7500.

Lexa 400 is an awesome reel. Casts a jig a mile and the magnetic cast adjustment is on the outside of the reel. Very helpful! Strong enough for anything on a kayak.

I love my Saltist 35BG, I can really launch an iron with that thing.

X2 on the saltist I'm a terrible caster but I can sling an iron a mile on a saltist 40H.

I like the old school reels.....Trinidad/torium 16 saltiest/saltiga 30t. 50 or 65lb braid and 30/40lb leader. I like to go at least 50lb on the braid just for the feel and I know for sure it would cut through the kelp

I absolutely "LOVE" my Newell 322's. I like the narrow spool making line leveling just natural! I like the 5:1 Newell 322 over the 4:1 Penn 99's (albacore special).
And just try to find a 322 in decent condition without paying "through the nose" for it!
If you're looking for a bait caster...have you checked out the Abu-Garcia Revo Toro Inshore NaCl 60? It has line capacity of 330 yd. of 30# braid and 22# drag! Comes in 6.4:1 or 5.4:1 and a NaCl 50 available in same gear ratios but 300 yd. of 30# braid.
Braid capacities are probably off just a bit. My Shimano 300 EJ's, Curado 200I's, and my Revo Inshore reels are all short by 10-15%!
I just bought 2 - 6.4:1 NaCl 60 HS's @ $210 ea. Regular retail $299ea.

What rod did you put your Toro 60 on?

For us lefties.....There is the Avet Line, JX with MC will handle just about anything on the Socal coast on a casting setup. The Lexa 400 looks pretty sweet, but I have no idea how long it will hold up. But I'm sure you'll find one in my arsenal in the next year. I'm running the lefty JX without MC and love it, but would sure like to try the MC for a day or two.

I used to use a trinidad 16N but by no means is it a bargain reel, but i know plenty of people who use a torium 20 or a revo toro nacl 60 like me

I bought one for one of my Loomis LMB Swimbait rods and the other for one of my Waxwing rods for 65# braid. Will probably buy a NaCl 50HS for my 50# Waxwing rod.

BTW: This reel takes just over 245 yards of 65# Power Pro Slick 8.
