Saw your post from your May trip. This will be my 4th trip on the Islander also. What worked best for catching yellows on your May trip, slow trolled bait, yoyo iron, surface iron, etc.? Any halibut taken? Did you fish from Pyramid down to China Point? bosco

I used to love those trips - then sold the old scupper pro and bought a PA. Never considered I could no longer do mothership trips. Someday I'll get a yak that can actually be lifted for these type of trips...

I wasn't on the May trip....but I was posting the same questions you're asking me in those threads! :)
We've yet to get into the YT in my previous 3 trips (a 1.5 day, a 2.5 day, and a 3.5 day), but the fishing has been outstanding every time.
If we get to fish the weather side definitely get in as deep into the kelp as you can and fish live or dead squid for some monster goats. Last year, on the last day of the trip I caught between forty and fifty goats, all out of one big hole in the kelp.
Here's some links to previous NCKA trips if anyone is interested:

I was on the May trip and we caught a lot of yellowtail. Seemed to me that the most caught were on fly lined sardines. But they seemed to be all over both up and down. The guy who caught the largest yellowtail, said that he was fishing with one rod set up for fly lining and one set up for being on the bottom. He caught 3. I only landed one but I broke off two others.
We were on the lee side of the Island. No kelp where we were, but lots of rock structure. I think that only one legal halibut was boated, but there seemed to be a lot of rock fish, bonito, sheepshead, calicos and the yellowtail.
Hope that the weather is better for you guys than it was for us. Very rough trip out with high swells and lots of wind. It settled down in the afternoon, but the morning fishing was a little on the tough side. Trip back was much calmer.
Good luck, guys!
