With this warm water the pelagics should be coming and (hopefully) staying in range of kayaking. I have tuna on the brain and would like to make some notches on my bucket list. Huge thanks to Mattrabasco for the inspiration, i figured we could make a separate thread since guys were already looking into some trips. So...........
Lets get some groups together for trip planning?
i wanted to head out wednesday but it looks like a small windswell in moving in from the north, that crossed with the long period south could make the paddle not so enjoyable.
Please...contribute to this thread with info, advice, suggestions, or questions. This could (no jinx) be an epic summer, and it might not happen for another 20 years, ya never know. Lets slay some fish!

Danny you could be right, This could be the BEST summer of your LIFE!!!!!
But only if you get out there. Guys, do NOT let this be the summer that was, and the summer you MISSED!
Around the 1st of July some of us might post about our latest trip to Gonzaga

Another idea would be to find a private boater willing to participate. Daisy chain three or four yaks behind the boat. Everyone on the boat and get the yaks towed out to the fishing grounds. The boat leaves and then all of you only have to paddle back in.

That sounds like a good idea. I think a certain person with an outback just bought a boat.

You are welcome Dano! I was hesitant to post it, but I wanted to share and get some people motivated to go for it. The day I went, there were perfect conditions for doing it. Wind and Swell were virtually non existent. I would go again if the forecast was the same. I don't know if I would do it solo again though; too many what ifs by yourself. I am down for it if the conditions get right again. Keep us posted on who, and when and I will join the search! Boat support would be great, but to be honest I would be more into doing it unsupported, from the kayak, from the beach!
Matt
Went out yesterday. So many boat bearings to keep track of in not what Id call good paddle conditions. One in particular was visible and bow-on for almost 20mi. I knew it was huge but I couldnt see a profile. Finally I looped back on my track and let it pass as it seemed to be on collision course for a long time.

Let me know when yall are headed out boys! Fished offshore yesterday Headed out to the 267 then across to 14 mile came across a lot of Dolphins mixed in with tuna, must of had at least a 100 pounder jump almost right across our bow. The bait wasn't right so couldn't get them to stick. Hit up four parties closer to shore and none were holding ( must of been our lucky day). But they are out their you just have to get em. My plan is to head out this Thr. with the IA offshore to see what I can see. I will be getting t0 LJ at 5, set up, try to make bait on the way out, then troll most the day out there to see what happens. Anyone else is welcome to join, I will have a sail so that means I may take off for bits on my own because I will be moving faster then most, but the more the merrier. Let me know if anyone wants to join, could be EPIC!

This is a great idea. I'm in.
I think we can get a bigger armada together if we plan for a Saturday or Sunday.
If youre looking for more people and more boats you should definitely charter a boat on the weekend w 75 of your closest then.
Since this is a discussion Im curious how you all see this going down. A dozen more or less strangers of varying abilities paddling/pedaling in a broken line to an unknown point on a map? A dozen guys racing to a birdschool and chucking iron at each other? Fanning out on 12differnent headings and keeping coms by radio? F it we're catchin tuna? Whats the plan?
One thing that I think got missed is awareness. Im not trying to be an arrogant internet prick. Im trying to share some experience. Just be aware. Log every single boat n bearing you see for 360deg into your mental radar and track them all conatantly. They all will be changing courses and speed chasing the same things you are and there are some idiots. Take commuting. You see some stupid shit on roads. Theres no lanes to follow out there and stupidity has no bounds. Keep your heads up and come up w a plan for the day and plan for when shit goes bad.
Ita a long summer. Lots of chances ahead.

I am in the process of getting a 20ft boat, if things go according to plan, I wouldn't mind towing a couple of guys out there. Would need someone to man the boat while I was in the kayak though...
I don't have any Charmin contacts but I have a Sam's Club card... I buy in bulk.

I don't think this is a bad idea to pull the kayaks out with a boat.
Here are some of the benefits. You get out to the fishing grounds in a much shorter time compared to paddling. You also have just saved your energy for more fishing and less paddling. So, how is fishing more and paddling less a bad idea?

Dana Point seems to be the logical choice for BLUE water closest to the coast, also holding some of the warmest water.........but these fish have not been very logical in where they have been popping up, we shall see.

I'll bite- RESPECT, HONOR and BRAGGING RIGHTS.
While it would be awesome to get a bft / yft regardless the vessel in so cal...it is truly more sporting and a helluva challenge to paddle out catch a tuna and paddle back to the beach.
I do not know anyone who has done this yet?? Anyone who does this is MY hero! Mucho respect for the guys trying.
If your going to take a boat out...mind as well just fish from it.
Take your kayak with you...its just another boat report with a kayak. ;)

Cabojohn,
I couldnt agree more. In a world full of shortcuts, its refreshing to retest the man inside us and see if we have the stones to go big. Sure its gnarly, probably a little crazy and has a high probability of failure, but so does everything awesome that anyone has ever done. History books and magazines dont exist because guys "hung in the harbor." People tried and people failed, but ultimately what was once 'impossible' became the norm. In a world of Online Dating, Siri guided directions, ADT protected homes, In-Car sensors for oil changes and low tires, Bumpers in bowling alleys, Everyone's a winner sports, Rules of Engagement during 'war', 25 airbags in ea. car, Electric start Lawnmowers, Baby Wipes for men, Electric bicycles, battery powered tooth brushes.....it's nice to go against the grain and do things the hard way. Just because its F@&$ing HARDER.
So heres to Home Brewing, single speed mountain bikes, earning the holes in your trucker cap, changing your own oil, hanging an American Flag all the time, telling people to 'Pick up their trash' even if it gets you punched, using old milk jugs to freeze water for your ice, canvas coleman tents, smoking fish in the side yard even if your neighbor is anti, going a little farther, failing, failing, failing before succeeding and Launching from land in a kayak to go earn your own fish....even if you fail!
My 2 cents

Wish I still had the bigger boat to help out! I did learn the hard way that Hobie PA's don't tow worth a sh*t. Ended up having to strap them down for the ride over to Cat! If your going offshore in a PA, I would not count on being able to tow it at any sort of speed where you'll actually get somewhere in decent amount of time!

this ^^^^^ is very true. for DP being a small harbor it draws a lot of traffic. In the fog with low visibility ... may not be the safest. Rough winded seas with boat wake caused by the "stupidity" of a boater can be sketchy.
I think 2 or more (buddy system) and radios are a must.
Today looked like a great morning to be on the water. Perfect clearing skies and smooth seas. Good luck gents.

Went offshore LJ on Tuesday. Made it about 8 miles out-similar spot to last trip. Not much bird/tuna action at all. Saw one good foamer that is about it. Not much bait like last time. Long day, must have covered about 20mi. Conditions were pretty good; 5mph wind 3-4 foot swell. Saw lots of blue whales - one came right in front of my kayak and I followed it for a few minutes. It is amazing how glowing neon blue they are in the water. Made macs this time, got a yellow on the mac flyline on the way in at about 5 miles out, off the edge of the canyon, 800+ feet of water, about 17lbs I am guessing. Definitely the farthest out yellow I have caught on the kayak. Trolled Rapalas and mac flyline all day.
Matt
Well... I already made my mind up.:reel:
I was only a year off.
I thought last year we'd see bft in the canyon.
Seems pretty likely now.

Yanni and I went for a 10 hour offshore from DP, kelps all over in that zone, went WSW then looped N and in plenty of bait balls on the meter, terns grouped up picking at bait, couple smaller porpoise schools but no fish in that area yesterday. Conditions were killer, other than the mixed short interval swell, this was around noon, winds stayed under 10 kts after peaking late morning. Parker obviously thought we knew what we were doing as they slid in and did a drift :D Water temps were 69-70 green.

Im tired of looking at that " plenty of bait balls on the meter, terns grouped up picking at bait, couple smaller porpoise schools but no fish in that area yesterday."
Next up, the Pt Loma crew.

Went out about 6-7 miles nw of MB and saw one boil for about 10 seconds. Something took a swing and miss at my trolled sardine just before the fish popped up. I got there by following a pod of whales and a few birds for a while that eventually took me to where the mass of birds and fish made their appearance. It got kind of snotty about 1 and I looked around and couldn't find anything too compelling so I started sailing back. The tandem island was killer for trolling under sail and I don't think I would have been very happy out that far in a regular yak especially with the big following wind swell on the way in. I will try again probably next week if the weather looks good.
Such an incredible opp to just be in that position. There are going to be more this Summer in that 100+fathom zone. As long as those chovy meatballz are around the fish will pop up on them.
