Was fishing with a buddy at san O a couple of weeks ago. We were harassed by a 7-9 ft juvi GWS in 40 ft of water.
NO doubt about it they live or visit areas you like to SW fish.
When you see one, you'll have to decide what to do. Made me think about what I did right and wrong. One thing was for sure, hard to drop a hooked bait with it swimming around the kayak.
We're both alive and the shark wasn't aggressive. So this one we saw wasn't a problem. Got me to think that the one you ought to be afraid of is the one you don't see.

If you fish LJ all summer you should see one or more if you keep your eyes open. They like seals, people not so much. They are AWESOME to see in the water from a yak. Seeing one up close and personal can be a life altering experience. Remember he is the TAXMAN! Rejoyce in the sighting for few ever get to experience such a majestic animal at close range. FEAR NOT, if he wanted you, he would have taken you without you knowing he was there. He is an ambush predator, if you see him he is just curious. Tight lines.

Haven't see any GWs this year but have hooked up on two Makos in the jewel in the last two months. With the increase in fish this year = more seals = more sharks so while it can be a pucker factor moment I welcome them, gives the seals something to worry about.

Every finning shark I see gets a bait tossed at it. Have yet to actually get one to the boat.....but boy what a sleigh ride. Don't worry about the sharks....plenty of swimmers to munch on before they go for the plastic navy.

They're there and most times you won't see them. I have hooked up quite a few times, most times it was easy to tell because they broke off early and left my fluoro leader kind of shredded on the end. Been taken for an over 1/2 mile sleigh ride by a large Thresher and finally he broke my 65lb braid while jumping and slaming his tail on it. Had a 5 1/2 foot mako 2 feet next to me on my line. Took some pictures before he broke the leader with his very gnarly teeth. Just check out my avatar. I always pay a lot of attention around me when landing or bleeding my yellow tail. I look out for seals but a shark could be a lot more trouble, so stay alert. If sharks scare you, stick to lake bass fishing. If they don't, then someday you'll enjoy the experience.
Mako, off DP, today.

I have yet to see one while on my kayak. I have however seen them while I've been diving and spear fishing. Lucky I didn't have a fish on my stringer at the time. It is such an amazing sight to see a shark swimming free. And yes it is certaintly an adrenaline rush for sure. They are beautiful creatures!

Once you paddle into the ocean it's like taking the training wheels off, all bets are off. But thats whats rad, its more real than a sport.

I've seen an 8ft hammerhead last year several times on the same day. Tossed a bait to it several times. Hooked it twice for 10 secs max before her teeth did the job.

Hammerhead circled me for about an hour gave me a couple of bumps. Got the adrenaline pumping for a while but was more of an nuisance than anything else.

I've been surfing, So and Nor Cal, for 30 years and kayaking for 15 years and so far I've seen threshers and makos here in cali and a black tip in the Outer Banks of NC. Sharks live in the ocean. Don't let that fact keep you on the beach. Seeing a shark is usually a rare and special event. Last week end I had a mako bite a bonito in half right next to the yak. Mike

Invest in a Shark Shield and you'll be fine. Or just fish without it and hope you don't get bumped. Truth is, the day will come when you get your first experience with a GW. Every experience is different, some bad lots that are ok. Its their ocean and your in it.

Also last week I had a 4-5ft mako break me off twice while cirlcling the yak and eating both baits I had out. Bumped my hull too.

It's like someone said once...Once you enter the water you are now part of the food chain..are they there yes..but so are the fish that they eat. Best case scenario they eat all the damn sea lions out there! LJ is not seal island off of South Africa so no Air Jaws..but just enjoy it, the kelp beds are amazing...just put it in the back of your mind and tight lines!:jig:
