Had the most amazing day yesterday, conditions were rough, but using my sabiki chum bucket with a squid made 8 greenback macks really quickly. Then set out West where I hooked into my first yellow. Gut hooked him so not much of a fight, eventually caught up to two other kayakers who were going out far like I was. Joined up with them and we ended up in a pod of at least 500 dolphins. After those, i saw these huge spouts in the distance, 4 HUUUGE whales really really close, makes you feel tiny when something the size of a house goes by and your in a tiny little kayak. We hit 7-8 miles out and had a hammerhead steal our bait and turned around to head back in. Ran into another massive pod of dolphins, this is where I hooked up on the yellowfin tuna. Two fish on-board. Getting closer to shore trolled a Mac through a little field of kelp pattys, no dorado but this FAT yellow! 3 fish on board. At this point I broke down all my rods ready for the last couple miles till landing. No way I could store another good sized yellow on-board. This is where I departed with my new kayak fishing friends and realized I was fishing with Jim Sammons the entire time. Im truely blesssed for such an amazing time. What an EPIC day.

Yo Kaleb,
Glad you got em. Tried keeping up with you guys after we left the pier but you disappeared into the distance. I only had 1 greenie so was not prepared to make the long trip. Glad to see you got em. Good job.

That is one hell of a haul. Way to stick it out and pedal that far out there. But how do you fish for a while and not know you're with Jim Sammons. I have seen him out there and trolled by, heading south as he and possibly a client were trolling north on their way back in. I can easily tell by the hat, etc., maybe I have watched too many of his TV shows. That is a trip you will remember forever and be talking about it endlessly. Congrats on all the beautiful fish Kaleb.

Wow.... that photo of you holding the yt, with yft on the back, with La Jolla in the background..... that is an all-time classic! Thanks for posting!
Imagine, a million-plus people on land, with no idea what is happening right now off the coast.
ps... I've been out on a pb several times lately and run into kayakers waaaaay out there, like 5+ miles. Just everyone be sure to know which way the current is going. That makes a BIG difference when coming back. This is not for everyone.
I've been challenged coming back from several miles out against current..... a few times..... it can be no fun. Don't forget the basic safety tips in pursuit of a fish.

It was great to meet you and fish together. I got my first ever La Jolla YFT that day as well. I have caught tons of tuna off my kayak but this one was special for sure. What a crazy year we are having. Thanks again for the Gatorade, with the gong show of a morning I was having I am surprised I caught anything that day. Thanks Rod for being the photo bitch.
