Finally got it. 30# BFT unassisted from the yak, with a YT to boot.

Caught on spanish flyliner 7 miles off the beach.

Hopefully nobody is too salty about me posting this. I don't care if there was a million tuna out there... it is not easy to track these things down at 2-4 mph when you're 2 feet above sea level. I got sucked wayyyy south by the current and had about a 4 hour paddle back in with my head down and pushing. Not to mention I was solo. Tried to get some peeps to follow me out but everyone thought the reports were bad and stayed in w the YT. Luckily I have a good radio w GPS. It gets real lonely out there when you're soaked in blood and your boat is practically sinking. In the shot where I'm on the radio, I'm calling in my old buddy the scallywag onto the school. But i did it totally unassisted.

On this day there were lots of PBs on 72 talking about seeing the fish but not getting them to bite. I think the kayak is actually an advantage on the spooky BF. Going offshore again soon... but maybe trying a different spot. PM me if you're interested and have your sled ready for the long haul. Lets make a plan.

You were really partially sinking? What's going on with that?

I'm a heavy guy (230#) and with 50# of fish, a full bait tank, and a nice compliment of offshore gear... I'd say I was pushing the weight limit in the prowler. I wasn't taking on THAT much water, but the hatch between my legs was definitely submerged if I stopped paddling.

Once I put the BF in the front hatch it lowered my center of gravity and made me a bit more stable, albeit lowriding. Still I'd rather have the prowler out there. You can see in the video, when I stop paddling I just keep gliding for another 100 feet. Multiply that over 12hrs and that's a lot of energy savings. So smooth and efficient. The rudder also makes a big difference when paddling diagonally to the swell, especially downhill.

A very rare day.

A kayaker catching tuna and YT, I wonder how many boaters were wishing they could sell their boat when they saw you with that load.....

Major props.

Congrats! You put the miles in to earn that fish. I didn't make it out as far as you that day, only half the reward.:yt:
Don't think anyone should be upset about posting a report from 8 miles offshore.

Amazing! Would a pro angler track much worse or do any better than a prowler going that distance?

Im sure it would track fine, although Ive heard they dont surf the best. The issue there is just the displacement. The PA has is massive and has a ton of drag, but then again you are using your legs. Plenty of guys have been taking them offshore.

You wont be winning any races in it, but then again you can also carry more beer than me.

Definitely going to look for a bigger tuna now. The big boys are in the canyons and cruising the shelves. It only a matter of time before a kayak sticks a tuna over 50#. Probably somebody already has but they didnt post it.

Well the tuna was 10# heavier... but all things being equal they are about the same strength pound for pound. The tuna fight is much different though. The runs are more erratic and the headshakes are "shakier". The tuna will frequently swim towards the boat and even towards the surface sometimes. Also, they will just sit at deep color for a long time and are very hard to bring to gaff. YT once you have them at color they have one run left, then they are done usually.

Nice job on both fish. What # line did you have on?

After losing one that chewed through 25# flouro, i put out my 40# flouro flyline and thats what the BF hit. Straight 65# spec to 5' flouro leader.
