Lots of first for me over the weekend at LJ. First time I could not make any bait at the pier before light. First time heading off shore from LJ in search of some more elusive pelagics. First time pairing my Avet SX with one of my GLoomis rods. First time I have fished 20# leader exclusively (that I can remember). First time I have paddled 40 or more miles in one weekend (all of it awake anyway). First Bluefin Tuna. First weekend I have not taken out my downrigger camera. First weekend I have drained my FF battery. First time I have taken frozen water bottles out in a soft-sided cooler for a purpose other than drinking. First time I have taken a drybag out for something other than keeping things dry inside it. First and second time going off-shore with only Spanish. And first time seeing as many people land with fish as without at La Jolla. Some of the firsts proved to be much more entertaining than the others.

Its hard not to when you put in so much effort and it finally pays off. Nice video Greg!

Tony was he calling you in on the radio, or just rubbing it in and telling you it was wide open? (;

Way to get it done Greg. Good lord that's a lot of paddling for a week end. Go ahead and take a few days off and go back to work and rest up.

That is awesome Greg! I can't believe you paddled that much over the weekend. I'm not fishing enough to stay in shape to paddle that kind of distance. I need to work less and fish more like I did last summer, I was fishing 2 to 3 times a week. I love your videos because they are well edited to show the important things while not being too long. Thanks for sharing Greg.

you're fishing for tuna with 20#? That story usually does not end well unless your name is GregAndrew.

caden... that's some avitar!

very cool. Would be neat to see your innovation to film the fly lined nose-hooked macked getting whacked by a tuna.

go pro on a kite, drone?

I heard about your day, all day long!!! From the frustrating
bait situation at the pier to small yellows that followed. But
that bluefin put the Sewer Team back on the map.

Hope you catch lots more. yanni

That is a sore subject with Tony, as he got chewed off twice. :doh:

just under 7 miles in a straight line from the beach to the spot. Another first was watching my FF trail from the day before disappear as I headed out.

The tuna are very line shy. Often they will not bite anything over 25# flouro. 20# is very common on offshore trips. The general rule is that you start off with lightest line until you get broke off then move up to 30, 40 etc.

Id rather get broken off on 20# then never get bit on 40#.

Id rather get broken off on 20# then never get bit on 40#. it's a bad idea this year, the fish are BIG. Fish 30# fluoro. We've gotten all our fish on 30 this year. They will bite it and you at least have a chance at getting them up. I spent 2 hours on an 80# YFT 2 weeks ago, but I did get him. I don't think I would have gotten it up on 20# as the line was very frayed after the extended fight. Like Greg said his buddy got busted off on 20#.

True... For an 80# fish, 30# flouro is very light. That's nice work there my good man! I suppose it's all up to the individual. I fished the 182 on Friday and we went 18 for 22 on YF up to almost 50#. We had guys fishing 25, 30 and 40. The 25# rigs got bit 5 times to every one bite on 30#. Granted we did farm a few and they weren't huge, average was 30 pound fish. 40 never got touched once. Not to say you won't get picked up, and you definitely have a way better chance of landing them if you do. I just prefer to get bit first then bust out the heavier gear.

Anyway, congrats again Greg! It may have been a day of firsts, but your demeanor as always said "no big deal" ... Cool and calm even with the reel detaching from the rod
