Yes, thank you Jeff, I would like to be over the border and on our way south by 5 am. That should get us to Rossman's place just about dark, or about 6 pm. Ross will have a simple dinner ready for us. AND then it is GAME ON. Full moon two nights later, corvina on the beach, YT from the yaks, maybe a wahoo (RESERVED FOR JIM, and SVEN. THANKSGIVING in paradise.
Guys start thinking about a side trip to Turtle bay area or the Abreojos area.

Ok, so I don't want to screw up anything else, but...I was planning on getting my FMM filled out, paid for, and stamped at the border. I know the route pretty good, and was planning on just catching up to the caravan. I don't imagine there to be a lot of folks crossing south at that time, so I am hoping to get it done pretty quickly. What do you think?

Having crossed the border at that time on numerous occasions, I can tell you that there is seldom any wait to get the FMM. The only wait is trying to get the attention of the guy at the bank who is probably asleep in the back room.

BTW you guys probably know this but as of September, the FMM can be used for multiple land entries to Baja.

Spoke to Robert last night. He's driving with me. We're starting our trip on Sat the 22nd and bailing out the following Fri or Sat. Feel free to drop Robert into a cooking date that fits into this schedule please. He said something about shrimp and scallops...

Oh, and Jim, are you heading straight down to Asuncion, or fishing another spot on the way down MIGHT be able to leave early to get in an extra day of fishing. San Quintin/Socorro had crossed my mind. Although, don't want to be a 3rd wheel spoiler for you and the spacenut! Haha!

Unfortunately I will be leaving early as well, Fri PM or Sat AM - w/open option for a room and 1/2 day fishing on the way home.

As for you guys fishing on the way down early - I also plan to head down Sat or Sun before (work permitting). I Was planning going to Punta Baja, $10 a night for a room, w/a possible Mon or Sun at San Antonio. Or, maybe camp in Puerto Santo Tomas - depending on weather/fishing in both locations. I have some killer structure spots GPSd in PB. Launch is just funky as are winds.

If I do Punta Baja still, I would meet you guys on the way down in El Rosario around 11 AM on Tuesday - maybe a lunch or fuel stop for some? But I haven't found great food in town yet, so maybe you eat in SQ and meet me at the gas station or grocery stores about noon. Look for my ride along the highway - should not be to hard to spot. Green PA14 on white 4runner w/rear cross bar on hitch.

Looking forward to this - Richard

HAHAHAHA!!! I've done Baja enough times. And I know the scouting required to dial in a new location. No fish stops for me and Robert. We're driving straight to Ross' place.

I'm also bring a few olive branch switches and I plan on riding Ross like the lean, mean, knowledgeable Baja burro that he is. Giddyup Rossie...take me to your 150 yellow spot...now let's go to your 40# spot...:paddleersmilie:

I will be holding nothing back (except from maybe my nemesis Sven) but chances are you will find some spots that I haven't found yet. If you guys have any Raider jigs in you quiver you might want to bring them along. I started using one this week mainly because there are a good number of wahoo roaming the waters and at Zed's suggestion they might bit attracted to the Raiders. Hit a new area yesterday and no hoo but managed 9 yellows on the Raider before being blown off at 10 am. All were pretty small between 8 and 12 lbs but stuck one nice chunky 20 pounder.

Zed

Yer doin it wrong. Again w the bycatch. Must be 9 [150?] dumber than your average yellows. You gotta wind faster or something.

Bounty on the first pelagic caught while fishing for them.

Rossman make sure Jumbo Jim does NOT get any of MY waypoints! He and The Svede have their own bycatch issues.

Now for the important import: how many of your are a craft beer geeks and what types l do you like? (Hoppy, Dark, booze you, etc.)
Rossman - specifically you?
I want to p/u some seasonals from a few breweries (Punkincinno & some fresh hopped) and maybe pull a few from my cellared selection (old Brandy or bourbon barreled aged or sours). But I don't want to waste the room or beer if none of you will enjoy.

While I certainly enjoy my beer, what I don't know about craft beer 's would fill a lot of books. Something lite and blond would be something I would certainly sample. Not a fan of the darker heavier beers. Trying something new would be a treat but not something I would truly miss if it didn't happen. If you are short on space, fill it up with what you think you are going to need.

Hi Guys,

My name is Frank and I'm new to Kayaking, and to posting in any type of forum. I was wondering if I could tag along on your next trip so I can pick your brains and learn as much as possible from you guys. I live in Calexico Ca. last stop in the US before crossing to Mexicali. I am Familiar with the San Felipe area and somewhat with Puetecitos. Went to Puertecitos a couple of weeks ago for My 1st Kayak fishing trip, hopefully the 1st of many to come. Still working on the details but I can either meet you guys at the Am/PM on 98 entering Calexico or meet you out in Gonzaga, as I'm still working with my schedule

A WEEK from now we will be fishing Asuncion.
JIM, so you want good spots?????? We know JUAN! Do you know JUAN? If not then you need to meet him. He has been catching WAHOO the last couple of weeks. And I am sure he would be happy to put you and some friends in his panga and show you what he knows. And that 150 YT spot, well it is no secret, just ask Sven.
Guys you can always rent a panga from Juan or other panga fishermen in Asuncion, or do it the BAJA or BUST way, just follow Rossman at 4 am to San Roque fish a few hours and come home around noon when the wind starts to build. The island is only about 2.5 miles from the launch, even Makobob can make the crossing. There is a reef about 1/2 way to the island that holds Yellows. BTW if you need help Sven has been known to TOW anglers home. Tight Lines and Fishy Dreams.
JIM, last trip down, Sven caught a WSB there............................................. ..in daylight!!!!!

I'm pretty sure Jim and Romspacenut are leaving Saturday morning. I'm sure you know this but the Baja 1000 is this week with start/finish in Ensenada. I think it finishes Sunday so that area will be a madhouse. Closures and detours will mess with your timing. The earlier the better through that area on Sunday.

Race ends Saturday night - I have been caught in it on the road to PST, boy did I piss some
Racers off. Sunday are the awards in the AM and all other areas look like a Zombie Apocalypse and eerily quiet (1000 miles capped by shooting tequila until sunrise will do that). So driving in Sunday will have a couple small bad spots with other areas better than usual. Monday will be worse with school and farm worker busses and pedestrians in every town while others try to clean up the trash from the race.
I kept Wed for food since I need to be back by Sunday as well. Rossman - do I need to bring pans, etc. for cooking in?

Bob - what is the latest headcount for mid-week?

Who is interested in going in for a Panga for Wahoo or Tuna if they don't want to play w/the kayak?

If so, is it with bringing a Tld-30 II w/80 for the panga? Or is the Torium 20 w/65 sufficient?

While I have only been out with Juan once after tuna, I think the Tld would be a better outfit for that style of fishing. Mainly because there is a serious problem with the lobos on the tuna grounds. Once bit, you crank like hell with a buttoned down drag while Juan backs down on the fish. If the fight lasts over 45 seconds you will probably lose it to ths dogs. Sort of meat fishing and not sport fishing. My score was 3 to 5 with the lobos on top. I have a TLD II rig here if you want to use it. Again, only been out once but I talk to Juan almost every he he goes out and it seems to be an ongoing problem.

Good to see more people joining us.

I saw a video of last year's NE party. In a segment Bob's wish was for five (5) more "new" people to join him for the next (2015) year's party.

What a guy.

Looks like his wish maybe granted.

It will be an asset to have a medical Dr. with us. So Buddha if you cannot make it, just send the Dr. anyways.

We did not fish but sierra seem to be gone, divers saw YT up to 20 lbs, cabrilla and grouper over 20#, WSB in the area. Still some corvina on the beaches. Commercials getting small sharks and illegal totuava. About 15 pangas left, the others are toughing it out a while longer. Lots of bass and triggers, small roosters at gonzaga.

well with the bad weather we got one day total in the water. hit about 5 or 6 island spots that usually hold good fish, visibility was about 2 feet so we just did some recon work and headed home a couple days early. Drove around the sheltered side of san Luis and had a little cliff jumping fun/terror. Thanks to everyone who cooked, told jokes, gave me awesome food recipes, and made this trip worth the 7 hour drive. Promise more dead fish when the weather settles. Big thanks as usual to Bob/Rob for hosting us. its always nice to get down south with the crew. Cheers and happy new year!

It was great meeting the Dannys, Eric, Frank, Michael and the old guard again: Rob, Ross, Mahiger, and of course Mako.

Thanks Mahi for all the great snacks on the trip and the calendar planner but sorry I will not teach you my backgammon strategies!

Danny try that brisket recipe and let me know how it comes out. Let me know if you can make the bbq seminar.

Good meeting you Frank, when you are in San Diego let me know and we will chow down on some Asian food.

Rob let me know if you want to come to my bbq seminar.

Mako: thanks for everything. Next year I want you to sing Karaoke with the locals in SPANISH!

NEXT TRIP
23-30 Jan 2016 GONZAGA, OPEN to all BWE members. FULL MOON trip.
This will be a working trip for me, and a FISHING trip for you. Should be WSB for you to catch. I should have all the materials to put the roof up over the concrete pad there by then. So come on out to help or come on out to FISH.

great conditions all week. one of my favorite trips to Baja yet. great people and great adventures.

Oh, and Bob, guess what i saw finally.......

:wsb:BIG BIG BIG

Fished three solid days. Rancho grande was out of gas for a couple of them, it had me sweating a little bit, but sometimes a smooth trip stays smooth, and gas was ready by the time we left.

one day fish haul, not bad. all fish shot in less than 20 feet of water. the spotted rose snapper was under a ledge 6 feet deep. many cabrilla were sleeping on top of boulders 2 feet deep getting some sun.

When the cabrilla are sitting like that in shallow water, the poppers work great. Nothing in the world gets your heart racing like a 10 plus pound cabrilla EXPLODING on your plug.

Was that a SVEN size WSB??? or bigger???

Glad your last day was as good as the first. I never saw the wind above 10mph and usually below 5. Nice weather window.

JEFF, it is the time of year for the cabrilla to show up in the shallows, usually hens pre spawn. WSB too, Sven plus ten for those of you who do not know would be WSB in the 50's and 60's. Tight Lines.

BTW one diver on this trip took a 75 pound Gulf Grouper. He shot it in about 25 feet of water.

Just back from another trip to paradise.
Weather, day one and two no WIND. ZERO. Day three nice morning, afternoon windy to 15 plus. Day four WINDY 10-20 ALL day. Days 5,6, and 7 again NO WIND!!!!!!! Temp 75-80 all week, nights lows of 45-60. GREAT for camp fires. Bring a jacket AND fire wood...................
Krocks and slow trolled plastics got the job done. Plastics from 4-12 inches worked well, slow trolled within 50 feet of the rocks. Bass, a few triggers, sierra were small, cabrilla over 15 pounds and orange mouth Corvina over 10 pounds were right on the beach. Yes one day YT were caught to 20 pounds. GONZAGA BAY was the hot area with double hook ups on the cabrilla, and 3-4 pound corvina in the back side bay behind Alphonsinas. Tight Lines.

Next Gonzaga trip will be leaving the 14th or 15th of July ANYONE can come down. I plan on leaving on 14 July from Johnny's Shell station in El Cajon at 4 am and arriving at our place around 11 am leaving you all afternoon to fish. I found water temps this last trip to be 85 degrees, air temps in the mid 90's daytime and 80-85 at might. It is hot there. WE sleep outside this time of year. Last week you did not need a sheet to cover yourself at night.
This is a FULL MOON trip. Crocks caught fish from the beach, triggers, bass, cabrilla and Corvina. The fly guys did well both from their yaks and from the beach. No YT last week, but a few sierra and the usuals. Saw Roosters over 40 pounds, caught a couple smaller ones, about 2 pounds. Looks like winds less than 10 mph first couple of days????? Will update wind speeds as trip gets closer. Tight Lines. If interested please post here.

2017? you ask? 1st trip starts 28 Dec for New Years at Gonzaga. Trip could be blown out as far as fishing goes.
2nd trip June to San Quintin for Halibut Tourney, dates to be determined soon, it will just be a Saturday Tournament, I will go from there to Punta Baja or Gonzaga depending on weather.
3rd trip will be two weeks in October for October on the FLY, these two trips are already 1/2 full.
There will be other trips if someone asks for a specific trip with dates, if not I will be posting MY Gonzaga trips for the spring before Christmas. I will try to give you time to plan, BUT if you give me dates that always works best. Tight Lines, and Happy Holidays.

I was hoping to do a birthday trip to Gonzaga in the beginning of September with a couple of friends. September 2-9th if you would be ok with us camping out at your place. Trip would be open to anyone.

If it ends up being a bit crowded, we'll try our luck at Papa Fernandez/Alfonsinas for a few days as well.

To our place ok, further south maybe another day or two, there are damaged roads and washouts so travel will be slower in some areas. Expect to see more animals on the roads, not a time to drive after dark.
