There are two distinct species of halibut in California, the smaller California halibut that is common in our waters and the : Pacific halibut which is not common south of the San Francisco Bay area. PACIFIC halibut season is currently closed. CALIFORNIA halibut season is open year-round. make sure you know the difference especially if you are fishing offshore in deep water.

for reference check this page out: http://https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Fish-ID/Sportfish/Flatfishes (https://www.wildlife.ca.gov/Fishing/Ocean/Fish-ID/Sportfish/Flatfishes)

thank you, I wasn't getting that reading the regulations, the last thing I want to do is come in with an illegal fish. I was looking for the size limit when I came across the closure notice.

In addition, there are lots of other fish that look very similar to California Halibut but have different regulations. Sole, Turbot and Sand Dabs to name a few. The shape of the tail and how far back the jaw projects are the main things to look for.
