So I haven't been down to the launch lately, but based on the new webcam, I'm not seeing many/any tour kayaks. Are they just out of the camera view or are the shark sightings doing them in?

Think is a combo of things. Schools back in, Summer is winding down, iffy weather, and maybe even the sharks. Rentals have been slow over here in Mission Bay by the OEX shop as well. Weekends are even getting lighter.

Yea, prior to the last month, it's been a ZOO down there regardless of the things you mentioned (except the sharks) ... Bad weather, midweek, school in/ out, or whatever, they are out there in droves. I think a lot has to do with the Groupon connection.
