If installing a trolling motor to your kayak, do u need to registered it? Overheard no need to if using it in the ocean? If so what about lakes?
Thx

Expect to shell out a couple hundred bux when you register your kayak. It is required in this wonderful state regardless of where you operate a motorized kayak.

Yes you have to register it. I could be wrong but I thought it was only like 15 bucks or so. check with the dmv.

just got the registration bill for my 2014 ranger. $36 for 2 years. its fairly inexpensive. might be cheaper if they don't require you to get the quagga mussel sticker

Use AAA if you have it. Not sure what documentation you need to bring though.

As far as I know...if you motorize your kayak you'll need to register it with the DMV.
This is from a BWE post a couple of weeks ago...
"show a Manufacturer's Statement of Origin - stating Dealer information, vessel information ( model name, model year, hull ID No., length weight, hull material. We will also have an invoice stating who the vessel was sold to."
Having the price on the invoice is important, as that is what they base your fee on.
Good info...but if your a AAA member it's much easier and quicker to do it at their offices rather than the DMV office."
FYI...if you only use your boat or yak in the saltwater you do not have to pay the additional $16 quagga fee...so it's only $20.

So I bought a little rubber raft for poaching concerts at Humphrey's. Sitting still in a yak for 2 or 3 hrs. wasn't comfortable anymore. Tossed my trolling motor on, good to go. Filled out the DMV form like a good boy, sent the money and attached the certificate of origin to the app. Just got my refund check and DMV says they can't register it because the origin certificate indicates that it's oar-propelled. That's true, unless you attach the trolling motor using the molded-in mount supports the boat comes with along with the mount I ordered from the maker. My application clearly indicated the boat would be motorized, but apparently DMV doesn't wish me to comply. I chuckled and took a pic of their letter so when I get pulled over for lack of reg. numbers, I'll at least have proof that I tried. No way in hell I'm standing in their line to get this sorted out.

Registration is cheap including the invasive species stamp but the state made me pay taxes

With all due respect, I would like to ask: Who cares?
Therein lies the answer.

Technically yes, you have to register it.
It's really cheap tho.
