So true..Born and raised in Hawaii.. We love us some Aku.. Dried/smoked is the most popular... When I was a kid we'd go to fish market and ask for any "aku heads" that were gonna be thrown out.. Sometimes get lucky with free aku bellies too... the heads are awesome bait for when we'd go crabbing and the bellies were cut into strips and used to catch all kinds of reef fish...

Gotta love the el nino variety. Southern pelagics close to the beach is awesome. Its tough for inshore warm water fish to make it passed the cold upwelling San quintin area. But maybe we'll see a few sierra, green jacks, or jack creval. A couple fish we usually see during el ninos seam to be MIA. Haven't heard of any short bill spear fish or big eye tuna reports. I remember during passed el ninos LJ being loaded with small flying fish, like the size of big dragon flies. Calico bass crashing fliers in the kelp line was crazy. Any one seen any this year? Mike

Except aku are white skipjack. Those are black skipjack. White skippys are the only one w pronounced black stripes below the lateral line. Black skippys have usu 3 dots just behind the gills on the belly and maybe faded stripes. There is no other fish that looks like a white skipjack.

Any one seen any this year? I have seen a couple fliers in LJ this year. I was surprised to spook one in Huntington Harbor last week. I also saw a needle fish chasing bait yesterday here.

Pretty sure white skippys =Aku and black skippies =fertilizer/catfood:D

Blacks also = really oily bloody stinky lobster bait.

Flyers from dragonfly to as big as those sheerwater birds off SanO.

There have been numerous short bill spear fish caught locally this year..... numerous!

Bigeye tuna not yet, but it's still early in the year IMO ;)

And yes plenty of small 3 inch flying fish on the kelp line in La Jolla.... mixed in with frigate mackerel for miles and miles and miles
