quick lobster trip long beach

needed to buy some fresh fish at the san pedro fish market that is open on Saturdays. since it opens at around 3am, my buddy and i decided to bring some lobster gear and drop nets around the oil islands until grey light. biggest went 7.4# and they were mostly males, which makes us feel better about keeping them.

I caught my largest ever at Chaffey in 15' of water, it was right around 9lbs

I feel pretty dumb for admitting this because I feel like I should have known this growing up in the Long Beach area and spending as much time in the bay as I have.

Up until recent, I had no idea the islands were named after the first four astronauts to pass in the line of duty.

Some new research out of New Zealand is showing that big old males may be the most important breeders in lobster populations. I did a google search for the professor that's doing the work (Sheri Johnson, University of Otago) but couldn't find anything on line.

we yakked it. didn't feel like going through all the boat headache for just a few hours of fishing

launched in belmont, next to the pier. no stairs to deal with, and no long walk to deal with. but my buddy said he's seeing alot more boats and kayaks go to the oil islands at night. luckily our spot is several dozen yards off the islands.

Just the opposite, it's the big old males they like. And apparently it's because of sperm quality. The big old boys got it where it counts... or so I've been told.

Just curious, is anybody planning on fishing La Jolla on Sunday? I'm supposed to be going fishing with some friends but I'm not to sure if the conditions are going to be Ideal with the winds being offshore and gust up to 12mph.
