View Full Version : Kayakers--BE ON ALERT

Brian called me with his story about his white sea bass.
I got a chill up my spine for the wrong reason.

Something happened to Brian while on the water that also
has happened to me, and maybe happened to you too...

There is a commercial fisherman on the water close to Brian
when he caught his fish. This guy, in his white 22' Cabo center
console, went into a rage. Yelling, cussing and pitching an
iron at Brian--just missing him by 10 feet.

The reason I'm writing this is because this happened to me back
in 2010 while fishing with the Darkhorse. The a_hole was in a skiff at
the time. He drove his boat right at me--cutting my lines--
as if to run me over. All the while threatening me and telling me
never to come back to La Jolla.

Brian was spooked at first and did all he could to get away from
this a-hole. Here's the sad part, a new kayakfisherman
who witnessed the assault on Brian and photographed Brian's fish
on the water, followed Brian back to shore. He basically won't go back
to La Jolla to fish again.

This guy needs to be stopped. Brian is probably going to the police.
But kayakers need to turn on their GoPros and catch this guy in
action before someone gets hurt.

If this happens to anyone make sure to turn on your Go-Pro's.

All should be on the lookout for this behavior .... and confront it .... and report it !

I have almost been running over opening lobster night by two a-holes aiming right at me on a powerboat on purpose and laughing as they waked me.

Jokingly in my mind I thought it might be nice to have a cranked up paintball gun and some nicely chilled paintballs and light these a55holes up when they endanger us like that at. Maybe a bang stick if they want to exchange some words up close..

This was all hypothetical of course No one should actually do anything like this. but at some point, these actions need to be dealt with.

maquinapescado

I exchanged words with him a week or so ago after him saying something to me the week prior. I think I mentioned my first encounter on another thread.

Both times he told me to get out from behind him ( I was pretty far, well well out of casting range). When he said something the second time I said, "Dude, your lines are in your f**king anchor, you aren't paying attention. WIND AGAINST CURRENT BRO." He wound up his lines and reset. I guess I shouldn't have said anything, if he got bit he would have been all wrapped up.

So in life, I've learned a few things. One is that there's a time to be right and a time just to get away. For instance, you're in a crosswalk and have right of way and you see a truck coming against a red light, but who cares about being right in that case.

I would caution anyone to give advice here to provoke this individual or even joke about it. Unfortunately they are in a PB, motor and heft. You are in a plastic self- powered tub. I wouldn't confront anyone on the water. Maybe haul ass back to the shore and drive yourself to mission bay and wait for this guy to get back.

Sucks to hear about this but inevitable with human interaction.

also call SD sheriff's office, report being attacked, throwing iron or lead at you is assault, even if he doesn't hit you. the potential is there. I've seen the sheriff boat in Mission a couple of times so they could roll out to LJ with ease. Let them deal with him. Most of the sheriffs I know are outdoors man and don't like those kind of jerks.

I see him all the time. A very hard worker who's trying to make a living. Never seen him blow up though but always respectfully kept my distance. I fished on his fathers sport boat back in the day. What a good dude who ran a clean boat. Killed a lot of fish on the 60 mile with him. Jim

That is one of the problems with commercial fishermen. However you came to be in "their spot", you are fishing in "their spot". And spot means anything within however far they say. Radio the authorities in channel 16 because that is assault with a potentially deadly weapon.

Verbal threats, physical threats like throwing irons and aborted rammings a clearly crimes, some fall in to the felony zone. Like Greg Andrew said, the ownership attitude extends to where ever this person is or wants to be. It reminds me in many ways of localism in surfing. The other terrible attitude about this is the believe that laws and consequences end at the beach.

Almost every one has video capability now so its only a matter of time before he gets recorded doing this shit. One, or several, arrests for aggravated assault will get this guy's permits pulled and get him off the water. A restraning order from LJ would be fitting. This has actually been done against violent local surfer banning them from thier home breaks. Seams strange that he can't see the consequences coming his way. Mike

Also taking video of him will probably stop him dead in his tracks if he's smart enough to realise how easily he could end up on the news as the goon of la jolla. I think he may have thrown a wake or two my way before but not dangerously close. He's definitely on my radar now and I will be on the lookout.

As far as Trompas being an ass, he's no different than all the other boaters out there. Although he was a lot noisier than everyone else, I'd have to agree with maquinapescado. I don't see very many other commercial guys giving out so many tips and information on the local bight. Here's a pretty rad episode with some useful information from both Trompas and Duane.

As a former Malibu Kayak pro staffer, a former OEX pro staffer and a friend of both Mr. Trompas and Mr. Pruitt and a friend to many a kayaker and currently a PB'er all I can say is this, Greg was always extrememly helpful to me while kayaking and always extremely helpful with tips etc... i actually never had a negative incident with the guy. I gave him his space as I knew he was a commercial fisherman and he had always worked his ass off.

I as well as many of you have had pretty negative moments on the water before after spending many a night catching or fishing for wsb and yt, I was not always nice but a lot of the time if I was being a dick it was due to not only poor choices on my part but also sometimes instigated by someone else's poor decisions as well.

I am not condoning anyone's behaviour all I am saying is this, please be considerate of one another out there...if ya give Greg or any other commercial fisherman their space you will often be welcomed or given bait or tips from them. I have had a few moments of just flat out stupidity out there in the 15+ years of fishing both on a kayak and a panga and now on a cc and if it was ever directed at you I sincerely apologize. But let's all admit we are human and make mistakes, remember being nice doesnt hurt anyone not does saying you are sorry if you screwed up. Greg is a friend as is Josh (Josh was even at my wedding) they both are great guys if you get a chance to meet them. Josh hleped me refime my skillset on the yak and Greg helped me a great deal when I bought a boat.

I am sorry some of ya have had negative interactions but show some respect to the commercial guys (there are a lot more than just Greg) and I gurantee it will benefit you. Show respect to get respect. If ya see me out there and are ever in trouble or need any assistance please feel free to hit me up on ch. 68 on the vhf even if its just for a cold beer and a hello!

Take care and tight lines to all and like Owl Chapman once said "guve a wave ya never know who has a cute sister!" And if ya know who's sister I married ya know what I am saying (Tylerdurden of BWE's sister to be exact)

As for the big wsb that Dave caught, I have a few pics of him with big fosh from my kayal days I believe.

I am very happy to call many kayak fisherman friends...guys like taggermile, cj siebler, Andy Iceman, Greg Andrew, Josh Pruitt, Jasmin, dorado50 , Billy V and many more! I hope i get to meet some more of ya and say hello as well!

Someone who knows him should link him to this thread.

If he's not always so determined to be an asshole, maybe he will apologize and behave with a little more civility in the future. Maybe he can try to redeem his reputation amongst fishermen.

Maybe he thinks his belligerent and condescending attitude is cool. Maybe he's just not thinking.

Commercial or not, that's no excuse to be rude. For his charter business and FB fishing page it would behoove him to build his reputation rather than destroy it.

Well said Matt. Being a dick, screaming threats, close fast drive bys, or throwing irons at any one is always wrong and I would never condone it. No one has any more right to the ocean or the fish than any body else. Period! You don't need to run from or avoid guys like Trompus.

But do your part. Try not to be a problem in a crowd. Be mindful of your actions and location. Some yakkers, and boaters, are inexperienced and have no knowledge of etiquate. Screaming at them doesn't help. Maybe it would be good idea to post some of the unspoken rules.

It's a simple thing but i always try to treat every one, yak, skiff, yacht, and sport boat the way I'd like to be treated. So far this seams to have worked cause after 16 years kayak fishing I've had exactly 1 yelling match. Which was odd cause I didn't even have a line in the water. And if Some times this respect isnt shown to me by others it doesn't bug me much.

Get a bit of experience n confidence in your self. You don't need to get in to the crowd. Chances are you know more than at least 1/2 those guys any way. You don't need to be in the chumm line of a sports boat. Let them pull all the sea lions in and go your own way. Trompus is a very knowledgeable and skilled angler. He's gonna be on a good spot, but not the only spot. Give him the room you'd want or give a wave n keep on going.

Greg Trompus gets way out of line, no doubt about it. But that's not the only side of him. Over the years I've had 1 interaction with him. It was during a marginally crowded bite on the squid bed strait off the shore. Being on a drifting kayak among many anchored boats you can quickly drift in to places you shouldn't be. I was paddling and staying in a space equadistant from several boats. I hooked a big yt that ran strait towards the kelp line. Right under Greg's boat and around his anchor. We worked together handing the rod back and forth around his anchor rope. I went around his bow, he handed me my rod back, and I landed a 35 lb yt a few minutes later. He yelled a "right on" n I went back and sincerely thanked him. Mike

Anyone who shoots at someone to prove a point is a dick, there is no sugar coating it. I don't give a flying fck who you are, you're a dick and you shouldn't be a gun owner. If you have an issue with some other kayaker or boater call them out and claim your space or handle it mano a mano like a man. Only pussies hide behind guns.

It's one thing to use a gun for protection, but using it to intimidate someone is completely uncalled for.

Photograph the boat, get the hull numbers and while on the water call the police, and or life guards.

A few years ago I was fishing in the Open Bay Bass tourney and a boater was racing back and forth in front of me at about 15' of distance trying to get me to leave the spot I was on. I pulled out my camera and started videoing what he was doing. As soon as he saw me with my camera out and pointed at him he left. They are liable for any damage their boat causes, including if the wake causes damage.

I agree to very much so.
Not to get off thread, but I too have a dislike of the most bikers.

The sad part is that now the motorist can get fined (3) times the normal fine if you hurt any bikers. How about doing the same for those bikers who violate the traffic laws?

I know not all are bad, but somehow when a person sits on a bike seat; something happens to his brain through his a$$. All the logic, curtesy etc. leaves his/her brain.

On one occasion there were literary hundreds of them going west on Venice Blvd. one evening. They had bikers blocking the traffic and would not stop for the red lights.

I called the police, but they did not believe that there were so many of them and blocking the cross traffic.

Along with many cars waiting to cross the Venice Blvd. I had to wait for perhaps for 45 min. Same thing happened in SD, but I missed their route.

I guess the slow bite but bigger fish are creating a sense of pressure at La Jolla! A lot of perspective comes from where you are; especially if you appear to be on fish.

Saturday was crazy for me in that PBs were all around coming to speak with me, blasting by at close range, etc... None were threatening but I'm sure they don't all appreciate the kayak perspective. The water surface around me was nothing but wake for hours. Just snag bottom or kelp or whatever and the bent rod is like the Pied Piper to fellow anglers.......or rats!

A few years back Greg had a big skipjack he was fishing on with Brandon Hayward. Every night for a while they'd come out at night and find the spot. In the morning the kayaks would swarm out and surround them and catch fish. They didn't seem to mind and were pretty cool about it.

Next time I hit LJ, I'll be sure to bring my SDPD buddy along. I'm pretty sure he carry's. If not, he'll have a cell and will know who to call.....and I'll just watch and laugh.

These types of punks, regardless of their job, need to get the lesson the hard way. Bullying others with the entitlement attitude, will only get your backside kicked, eventually.

Who was it that said: "Nothin' like a nice piece of hickory"? ;)

Heard that one too many times, but I'm guessing you are looking for from a movie? :D

Googling would be cheating. Don't know it off hand

Who said anything about a handgun? Now that everyone know this clowns taking shots at people, an AR with a few mags should hold you over until the Calvary arrives. Dude might wanna rethink who he's shooting at and who they might be. Just sayin!

Dirty Harry.......so the Maggot said to Harry when he told him to drop the bag and show him the gun (in the park scene at the cross, before Harry stabbed him in the leg).... Always a favorite.
