Hi Guys. Went fishing out of Newport this past Sunday with my son. Trying for rockfish but ended up catching (and releasing) these guys. Can anyone help ID? Thanks!

Yep, great eats. But kudos on releasing what you were not sure you could keep

Thanks guys. I'm a stickler for releasing unless: we know what it is; it's legal; AND we (my son included) will eat it. Kinda hard cuz every time he catches something, the first question out of his mouth is always: can we keep it? He's gonna be pissed I made him release them!

Some vanishgly small fraction of ocean whitefish are unpalatable...or so I've heard. Not toxic or anything, just inedible. If you get one that's nasty and bitter, just persevere.

I've eaten a thousand of them and never had this problem.

I've had it happen to me a couple times. It tastes like someone seasoned the fish with baking soda. Other than that the fish is super tasty when the meat is right.

Good eats. Just got to remember they have the same closed season shared with rockfish.
