Is there NO one who has been here besides Jim S? Not a lot of information about this area as far as camping spots or specific fishing areas. Rather not go with Mag Bay Outfitters, so your help would be great. This trip has been om my BUCKET list for 50 YEARS, I will make it happen. Hope you can make it.

I have a spearo friend here in Asuncion that goes down there several times a year. I'll try to pick his brain. Not exactly my kind of fishing but maybe I should take a trip to check it out.

I've spent hours and hours on Google Earth over the years dreaming about that place. I pretty much came to the conclusion that the bay is so big, that trying to hit multiple locations would be difficult, unless I was staying multiple weeks.
I just re-visited the maps and cut this area out I had identified earlier - north of Adolfo Lopez Mateos - nice wide beach access hilighted on the right to camp and launch from, with tons of mangrove channels to the north, and access out to the main channel easily doable for Halibut and WSB. Just for reference, the little dots straight out from the launch are a whole group of Pangas one mile out using the Google ruler - I'm going to guess fishing, since the image date is early October, a little too early for whales.
Lopez Mateos is also a good place to hook up with a mother ship charter, or super panga to head out for Wahoo action.
Wherever the trip ends up, it's going to be awesome I'm sure.
I'm going to try very hard to be on this trip Bob...

It is time to try and put this together. Last year I spent NEW YEARS EVE in Gonzaga. I would really like to do it again this year. Buddha sang MEXICAN.
So my proposal is to leave 30 DEC for our place in Gonzaga spend NEW YEARS day there then leave early on the 2nd for Mag Bay. We would drive thru Coco's Corner to Chapala then south on Mex 1 to Mag Bay. That road is passable for most vechicles, made it fine last year with one wheel drive pick up. Or you guy's could meet up with me at Chapala. Let me know if we can work this out. Thanks, Tight Lines.

Time to get real serious about this trip.
EVERYONE needs to CONFIRM, that they are coming, who is riding with who, also your TWO choices of places to camp and fish. Do we need to consider maybe hiring a panga one day to fish outside? It is time to put this together, get it planned and get on the road.
We really need two other 4X4's to do this trip safely as there will be off road areas to be traversed and 3 good trucks should keep us out of danger. We need to start thinking about camp gear specially sun tarps for camp and cooking areas.
Personally I have been DREAMING about this trip for 50+ years, it is time to get it done. Tight Lines.

1. Waiting for Maghigeer to confirm, I might have or can make room for you to ride with me..
2. Actual dates would be 30 Dec to Gonzaga for NYE pariy. Return to San Diego 13th of Jan 2017.
3. Cost ??? Fuel, my truck round trip around $400-$450. Split 3 ways about $150 each plus your meals, drinks, tackle, I would guess total per should be about $300 each if we do dogs, burgers, fish, burritos and the like. You would be resposible for one to two days meals. We should each do breakfast and dinner on our day to keep it fair and easier for all. A restaurant might do it if available., depends on where we are. I would expect fish for dinner most days and eggs, pancakes, etc for breakfst. Breakfast burritos anyone??? Bring your snacks for a fishing lunch on your yak or the beach. Water will be important so we will need to bring it all with us.
4. A lot will depend on how many are coming, and their trucks. I should be able to carry, You, Mahigeer, Me, our yaks, and our gear, food and drinks too.
5. Breakfast can be done the evening before and set aside for the morning so whoever wanted to get an early start could pick it up and head out, we did this the last Gonzaga trip and it worked great.
6.

Large ice chest and a 2.5 Cubic foot portable freezer, and some outdoor night lights. Also dish soap. BBQ is a Green mountain pellet grill, so we can smoke, grill, bake.
YOU will need fork, knife, spoon, plate, and cup. comfortable chair and sleeping gear, tent?
WE will need SHADE, for camp and food prep area. Tarps, tye lines, stakes. ALSO an extra 5gal propane tank and maybe an extra 5 gal of gas for generator. Power strip for charging of electronics.

Bob - I am in!
One, maybe two, others guys in my truck (4wd). There look to be a few nice beach camping spots north of Adolfo Lopez Mateos. The one mentioned by Baja traveler looks excellent.
It says 500miles from gonzaga to here. We could make it in one long day, but would be arriving in the dark for sure. Another option would be to stay at my buddies place in Loreto for the night. This is about 2 hours shy of Mag Bay, and right on the way. Maybe even do a drive by on the harbor in the morning to check it out. A lot of times the small jacks, bass, and needlefish are boiling!
There also look to be plenty of restaurants, markets, etc in town to resupply, shower, whatever.
This is my next big trip and I'm looking forward to it!

Sorry to hear that Bob.:(
If any of you all still want to go, myself and two buddies will be leaving Dec 30th and returning Jan 9th. Possibly making a couple of stops on the way down or back in Abreojos, Asuncion Bay, or loreto.
Anyone that was going on the original trip, or thinking about it is more than welcome to join us. Unfortunately no more room in my truck with 3 kayaks, 3 fisherman, and all of our gear. A second vehicle is always nice to have on these trips!
As Bob has said many times. It will be a fishing trip of a lifetime, and cost almost nothing... My last trip spitting everything by 2, it cost us ~500 each for 10 days food, gas, whatever else included (And my truck is a V10!).

Current plan is to leave the 28th and cross the border just before sunrise... get FMM visas... and head to Asunción bay. Spend the night at Shari's and fish Asunción island in the morning (calicos and YT), and maybe the beach to the north in the evening(Corbina and halibut)
Spend one more night in luxury, and then leave the next morning for Abreojos. Fish La Bocana and coyote estuaries, and maybe the inshore reefs. Hoping for some corvina and broomtail grouper. Next morning leave to Adolfo Lopez Mateos and set up camp north of town.
No plans after this except lots of stories and hopefully some good pics to back them up.
Rossman, wish you were going to be there, would love to fish with you sometime!

BREW, I load two yaks on top FIRST with rods and tackle inside them. Then load the back of the truck to the height of the gunnel. Third kayak then slides forward just short of back window and a sling attatches it to the underside of the REAR rack. Back (stern} is higher then bow. Tie yak so it cannot slide forward and hit back window. Load rest of stuff around yak and tie it all tighther. STUFF likes to JUMP out the back and you never see it leave, its just gone. That has included sleeping pads, camprite, tent, fishing rods, and food, So take the time to tie it in. We traveled off road this way and it works if you have a good rack. Waiting to hear YOUR report. Tight Lines and Happy Holidays.

Drats! Sorry I'm going to miss you guys. I will have my GPS powered up today or tomorrow and I will message you some numbers. In general, the east side of Isla Asuncion has been good for yellows since Labor Day. Work the 90 to 120 ft contour along that side of the island and you'll probably run into some. Lots of calico in the same area. 5 to 75 ft on the reefs and boilers. Good Luck.
