I haven't done any thresher fishing. but would like to have a rig ready next time I go out.

I have an MXL single-speed and a MXL Raptor, both with 65lb braid. What would be the tackle preference from there ?

Thanks!

I would highly recommend NOT using spectra on threshers. That's a good way to loose a finger.

Use mono with 80/100lb leader. it's a lot safer and easier to handle a thresher when getting ready to land it on your kayak.

I use braid all the time for them, I don't grab the line to bring them in anyway. I use a Calcutta 700 with 65lb braid and a light wire (Knot2Kinky brand) about two feet long.

Works like a champ.

Live or dead bait under a big float about 3" under the surface.

What type and size of hook for live or dead bait ? 3/0 Circle or ?

Match your hook size to your bait -- 3/0 for smaller macs up to 7/0 for bigger models. If you're using circle hooks to prevent gut hooking, you can increase the hook size a little depending on brand to make sure the gap is wide enough.

For dead bait you can up the hook size pretty much to whatever you want, but I don't think there's really much need to go bigger than 4/0 or 5/0.

Again, I would stay away from using braid on a kayak too much risk. Using braid on a boat is good, especially if you hooked 200lb T shark.

I just don't see any advantage of using braided line on a kayak for fishing threshers. Threshers pull real hard and can yank the rod right out of your hands.

I like the stretch on the monofilament. I hooked a thresher last week using 50lb main mono line with a 80lb mono leader. Worked like a champ!

With a retractable hook blade and lots of WD40 to keep it sliding back and forth around the neck for easy access to cut your self out of the bite.....braided line is a real kelp cutter.90ft of water fishing in la jolla good luck fishing without braided line when a fish takes you in the kelp I say fish with what you feel safe with
