I got up at three this morning to hit Mission Bay. I loaded the truck last night so all I had to so was jump in the truck and go. It's 120 miles and I hate the rush hour traffic so I have to start early. So driving down I'm trying to decide what kind of paddle to buy and what is the difference between the shallow attack angle and steep and which I would need. I was coming up on 100 miles when it dawned on me I had forgotten to load my paddle. It was still before 6 and I knew I wouldn't find any place open for hours to buy another paddle so I turned around and drove home. 200 miles in a truck that gets 12 mpg really pisses me off. Oh well, there is always next week and maybe I will learn the difference by then.

Feel your pain. Done the same. Solution is to go fishing more so that you establish a routine. Probably twice a week should get the job done. Ha!

Damn! Sorry to hear bud!
Me and my uncle took our boat out last month and had to turn around 3x after leaving, towing a boat. First time we forgot the boat key, second time was the VHF radio that was left on the charger and 3rd time was bait. Luckily we weren't only a few blocks each time.
It's the excitement of going out I think that makes us so forgetful. We decided to make a check list of things and get it laminated and put it in its truck. Mainly for safety items but also included a checklist so to help us out.

the worse thing is I walked past the paddle a dozen times with my hands full and kept telling myself to grab the paddle when I came back by. I'm just glad I remembered before I unloaded the yak. I hate lifting that sucker onto the roof of my camper shell

That sucks Harry! Hope you had some good fishing after all that. Since I'm prone to oldtimers disease, I've taken to stashing extra essential stuff in my trunk. I have my old paddle and PFD in there. A list of things I've forgotten includes the bladder for my float tube, waders, and my favorite plastics. I'm sure I'll add to that list as I age.

This is why you group your mandatory take items together in your garage. When the pile is empty, there is nothing left to load. When you are done fishing, make the pile again.

years ago i went lobstering in mission bay and forgot my paddle. i was only 15 minutes from home but still i just hand paddled over to a dock that had rental kayaks and "borrowed" one of their paddles. when i was done i retuned it and no harm done.

I've done this once but I already unloaded my kayak on the sand by the time I realized.
Make a checklist of things you need to bring! I've been meaning to do this forever to make packing much less stressful.

I've recently put all my kayak gear on a rolling rack. Having all my gear on one unit allows me to never to forget the most essential things for a trip like a paddle, and in my case a mirage drive.

Normally I put the paddle with my rods, for some stupid reason I stuck them on the back seat of my jeep. It isn't like I didn't see them though. I just didn't follow through and pick them up. Maybe I was so excited about my new fish finder that I was distracted, or maybe some days I'm just dumb as rock and can't be trusted with things like walking and breathing at the same time. I did get to see the sun rise and it's always fun to watch how many idiots are on the road at all hours of the day and night. If it would have been later than 6am I would have gone over to OEX and borrowed a paddle but I was home, had breakfast and a nap and the truck unloaded by the time they opened.

I had that happen to me a few years ago.
Left work at 6am, fought LA traffic on the 105 and 110 all the way to San Pedro. I show up, off load all of my gear and do a final check of my gear and then WAMMMMMO! I forgot my mirage drive at home. After that incident I never forgot my mirage drive but I have forgotten to load my rods, my gaff, my radio and worst of all my toilet paper.

Just as long as you didn't forget to bring your sabiki 500...you would have been fine!

there are two positives in this adventure, the first is no clean up, the second is i didn't get skunked. You can't get skunked if you don't actually get to fish.

I had my Sabiki 500 in the truck, it is still a virgin, I haven't used it enough to get it wet, which describes much of my dating life when I was young

how do you do that in a kayak? I can hardly piss in a bottle without watering my leg in the process.

Forgot my seat once and gave myself a sore back from peddling around while sitting on a folded up towel. Made a checklist on my phone. Also added items to do the day before like charge batteries, chop up bait...

Sounds like a lot of us have done the same. I went to Dana Point one time and got everything loaded on my kayak and got down to baby beach. Took my wheels off and went back to the car to put them away and to get my pfd. No pfd, left it on the hook in the garage. So I had to be extremely careful that day and was very lucky that I didn't have any need for it. I'll never forget my pfd again!
A few weeks ago I got everything unloaded off my car at Newport and had everything on the kayak ready to take it down to the Coast Guard Beach and then discovered that I'd forgotten the seat. I looked around the car and then remembered that I'd left it hanging on a hook next to my pfd. Fortunately I wasn't far from home, so after taking all of my stuff down to the beach, I quickly drove home and got it. But at least I didn't forget my pfd! :o)
Happens to the best of us. Some, more than others......

I would like to add my 2 ct. if you do not mind.
I have left rods and a dolly once when I went to Catalina. I had to drive 45 min. in a heavier traffic going home than getting to the terminal.
I lost fishing time, but fortunately, Catalina Express is good about not charging for missing the boat.
I even had one of my famous lists and had checked the items out. Now I have a different list and only check the item AFTER it is in the SUV.
Your experience will be part of you fishing outing.
Have a laugh about it.

I like developing/purging checklists for various purposes - kayak related, fishing gear, personal items, support tools and backup items that remain in the van, picnic/camping supplies, bug-out bags, etc. It's so easy to have these lists at my fingertips in my iphone.
As a pilot I learned to use checklists in my formative youth. It's a good procedural habit to develop so it becomes automatic. Especially for those of us who are gifted with rip-roaring ADHD or who jump up and hit the road early before we are fully awake (eye-roll).
I also prefer to pack, bundle and stow everything in my kayak the night before so I don't waste time in the morning. It rolls out of the van and into the waves effortlessly without thinking.
I let nature take it's course as I come to life slowly in the mornings. I'll become fully functional with with my first bursts of adrenaline when I'm on the water. At that point it's too late to go back for anything I forgot :-)

if it would have been later in the morning I probably would have rented a paddle but at 6am it's a long wait until businesses open. I won't do it again, I put my paddle back in it's normal spot.

It's been mentioned a few times but I use a checklist as well. It's saved me many times!
