Kenny, Andy and I left the yellowtail biting on the inside
to search for our pots of gold. 6 miles out it started happening.

Dolphins, birds then the tuna. Boils here and there. Birds here and
there. The three of us scattering and hoping. No bites. La Jolla
inshore was dead, plus the long drives home... No conservation
on the way in. Fun? You bet!

Let's Do It Again!!

Good try! Its like trying to find a hungry needle in a haystack, but when you do...

that what I been hearing from my friends who have been coming back on sportsboat... they go out, they see them play, they seem jump, freckle and dance.....

BUT THEY CAN"T GET THEM TO BITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and if somehow you get them to bite... U bet its going to be BIG......

bring the heaviest gear you got...... and landing..... its a whole other story....

maybe this is a new breed of highly intelligent nuclear powered blue fin.

Thank for posting the report. Wish I was balsy enough to go out the 6 miles. The going out I don't mind, Its the paddle back I'm worried about.

How long does it take you guys to paddle back and do you all have mirage drives?

WARRIORMIKE

thats a long haul for sure

No mirage drives, it's called paddle power. Time it with the wind.
Makes the paddle back much easier. For the easiest paddle back,
have a tuna between your legs!!

Made it out 4-5 miles then mother earth decided to show off her power and serve us up some wind chop like no other, had to turn back and head in for safety reasons.

Looks like the weather was perfect for you guys.:cheers1:

Usually I just end up, on the way back, with my Schwanzstucker between my legs :)

Any time I think I need a fancier kayak to go further out I remember that Yanni paddles that Cobra to the edge of the earth and back. :notworthy:

Not sure what super pill my Chirp 4 was using, but I held bottom the whole way out and back at 6 miles we were in 1200 feet as warm as 75.5, lots of bait out there.

I do not mind working for that golden ticket! Hopefully again next week! :paddleersmilie:Case in point, I hooked a mako and had a pretty easy release, but shit can go wrong out there.

If you go, just buddy up and watch each others back. I am sure Yanni would have cut our 100 pounder into even 1/3s for an easy paddle back in:D after a quick snack from it.

I never really marked any to drop flat falls on, threw a popper hoping for a blind strike quite a bit.

Were you guys trolling all the way out and back? Bait? Rapalas?

Iceman
07-20-2016, 04:33 PM
We were trolling macks until a dog decided to follow us about 4 miles out, then a pack of teenage dogs came through too. I trolled a smaller plug as well most of the way in.

College try for sure!

Fished yesterday in the same general area as you. Acres of fish just breezing and milling around. One boat hung a double on the breezers using skip jigs, they lost one and landed one that looked to be over 100lbs. We did get a taker on the slow troll mac right in front of a breezer school, spit the bait though. Check the finder shots ...

Holy crap, those screen shots are insane! I'm thinking of heading to Oceanside, get a scoop of dines from the barge and head straight out. Just need to see who's down to go this weekend.

Either that, or Dana. But I think I might have a better shot out of Oceanside.

Nice try guys. Andy/Yanni did you guys launch up north or down SD way? If I'm not mistaken you tried both last year, with some success.
Thanks,

Thanks Kaykfisherman for the report. I probably will be heading there from AZ in 2 or 3 weeks to go try for some of these guys. The knowledge on this forum is outstanding. I have some rigging to do on my PA14. But should be prowling those waters in 2 to 3 weeks.

thinking about another try this year
soon

don't like that wind report for scripps but need to check more north

10 knts starts to be a hassle but may never achieve that on the noaa

surfline shows 5 knts or less for sat
but some swell at dana and Oceanside
not to bad

surfline uses weatherunderground I think
