I REALLY NEED your input.
12 people need to show up this year. Post if you are coming. If I do not have 12 or more people I will cancel this and just do Gonzaga for my birthday. Cost will be $25 to enter, paid in cash the night before the tourney. Longest halibut wins. I will be at Don Eddies the evening of the 23rd for you to pay up.
This is MY plan. 22 June go to San Quintin, 23 seafood party, 24 tourney, 25 June thru 4th July GONZAGA.
Without 10 confirmed people I will just go to Gonzaga on the 22nd and stay thru the 4th of July. Both ways I will host a seafood party on the 23rd. Tight Lines. Yes I will fish my SOLO for the tourney.
I'm in... already made my reservations at Molino Viejo.
Also, my wife Linsey as well as our friend Seva will be fishing in g the tournament, so there's 3.

Nice! Only 7 more to go Bob. Good luck...
Guys in addition to halibut, the last two years there has been a lot of WSB caught on or near the 4th of July right in the bay. The hot ticket has been the 4 0z chrome crocs.
Fishing w George from KnM sport fishing I learned every stop he always had a 4 oz kroc in a rod holder sometimes solo or sometimes pinned w a squid or a mack he would just drop down and let sit. I got both WSB + Yellowtail 2 years in a row just for tossing out an extra rig in addition to whatever rig I was fishing.

GREAT Kai, Tony told me he has 10+ locals ready to do it. Like last year they will have the home field advantage, so load your guns. I will arrive the 22nd about noon and have two rooms booked so there will be roon for a few. I plan on leaving on the morning of the 25 and head to Gonzaga for a week. You guys are welcome to join me or head back home. Tight Lines amigos. Again I will be staying at Don Eddie's.

Looking at the list of folks that are fishing this Tourney, I suspect there are a good number that have never fished Bahia San Quintin for halibut. I have spent about 10 days on the water there and have had what I consider very good halibut fishing almost every day, but I'm by no means an expert. I find it quite different than the traditional Southern California halibut fishing, mostly because of the conditions. The tidal currents rip in the bay. It is almost like fishing on a river. The further you get from the mouth of the bay, the worse the current. Secondly there is copious amounts of floating eel grass and ribbon grass that float in and out with the tides. I find it extremely frustrating to fish with anything other than lead head and plastic combos. One can usually sabiki up some smelt and sometimes some macs but I have found it impossible to fish live bait because of the current and weed conditions. Even with fishing artificials you will end up with a wad of weeds on every cast. But if you try to hit the holes in these mats of floating weeds you will find that you will only be snagging the weeds on the retrieve and you will be able to work your bait on the bottom for a bit before having to retrieve it. I try to use as little weight as possible but unless it is slack tide, 3/4 oz is probably as little as you can get away with. The locals generally use scampi or other curly tailed grubs for their halibut fishing. Bring plenty if you choose to fish this way because the bass are plentiful and voracious. My best fishing has been close to the weed beds in 5 to 25 ft of water. The deepest water I have found has been about 50 ft. I have never had a bite in the deeper water but there have been 50 lb halibut jerked out of the area they call "the hole". Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Any tips for taking the san ysidro sentri entrance and then the toll roads down? Looks quite confusing but with detailed directions should be fine.. How much do the tolls usually total one way? As well, what's the kayak storage situation like down at Don Eddies? Sorry if this has been covered in previous posts I couldn't find much in re. to this..

There is no Sentri entrance going South (as far as I know) - going North though - for me the biggest stress of going through San Ysidro is finding my way through the maze to get to the Sentri lanes. It is a total mess of turns, loops and confusion.
Do yourself a favor and go to the BajaBound.com website, then click on "Before You Go" in the upper right. There you will find a bunch of Photo directions, the Toll road and Sentri lanes being the most important for us. Print them out, study them and have them available on the front seat next to you while you are driving. Finding your way to the Toll road is easy, then it will cost you about $6 - a few bucks at a time through the various booths along the way. I always bring $1 bills for this, as well as a bunch of quarters ( a few booths are $1.50) - if they have it, they will even give you the change in U.S. coins - otherwise expect to be getting pesos. Each booth lists the toll in pesos and U.S. currency, so its easy.
My last trip to San Quintin I got lucky on the way back, and ended up behind one of the Baja 1000 chase teams who seemed to be taking every initial turn I was following, so I just followed them (as they had obviously done it a ton of times).
Kayak storage - the top of your car maybe? That's where mine was when I wasn't sitting in it...

Here are a couple excellent images of the SY border crossing and FMM info. Stole it from another forum and I wish I could give proper credit but thank you TMW from Baja Nomads.
This may help in getting your FMM.
Follow the red line to the area to park. Follow the blue line and go inside the bldg and walk to the area between buildings. The office is to your left. Fill out the paper work then go back inside the building to pay at the bank. There are two banks one on your left as you came into the building and one on your right as you went out near the FMM office. I'm not sure if you can pay at either as I've only used the one where you come in on the left. Anyway pay then go back to the office and get it stamped and signed.
Follow the yellow line to the toll road. Remember to stay right when you leave the entry gates.

You can also do the FMM after crossing the border. In the bottom picture, just under the Google Earth logo you can see some cars parked. Park over there and walk back to that same building. Of course, if you are just doing the several day tourist FMM, you do not need to pay...

See you in Gonzaga then.
I leave in a couple of days, weather for San Quintin Halibut Tourney fooks like 80 daytime, 70 night and 10-15 mile winds. So all is good, sea food ordered for dinner on the 23rd. Buy your own drinks but dinner is on me. Tourney on the Saturday the 24th. Early Sunday mourning I travel thru l Rosario and Lago Chapalla, past Coco's corner to Rancho Grande then 10 miles north to paradise. I expect to arrive in our camp around noon.
Temps HIGH 90's days, 80 at night nd winds below 10mph all week???? At least that's how it appears to me where I looked.
So if YOU are coming for the 4th of July weekend be prepared with SMALL drinking water bottles. I have about 20 one gallon bottles of water on hand, and paper plates, paper towels and toilet paper. So please do not bring these items.
Paper bowls and plastic silverware appreciated. If you plan on using the Gregor skiff it burns about 3 gallons of gas a day and is only safe for two persons. The quad is full and so is the generator so we should be good there. Solar is almost dialed in so recharging your electronics should be fine. Sunglasses, sunscreen, long sleeve shirts, hat and put your game face on, as the fishing should be wide open.

Easy part first, FINAL weigh in will be at Don Eddies NOT later then 6pm. Is Soccorro too far, to paddle yes but you might drive and do a surf launch but that can be iffy. Guys usually drive to the light house by El Cielito Lindo Hotel and launch in the bay. Ask around at the dinner the night before the tourney some of the guys share info, but not secrets. See you there.

Got on the water about a half hour before sunrise this morning. Cool wind from the north and strong enough to produce whitecaps in the bay. Pretty uncomfortable for the first hour and then it totally glassed off. I was expecting warmer water temps (57) and warmer air temps (61) so I did not bring my waders with me. Got a little chilly in my shorts. The water was green and just a bit of red tide action. The floating eel grass and ribbon grass was not nearly as bad as my previous trips here. Worked some areas that I hadn't fished before and managed 3 butts. They all came at the peak of high tide. I suspect I'll need something bigger than this for a shot at the money on Saturday but at least I have some meat for the cooler. Off the water by 10:30. I have a couple photos but for some reason BWE is not allowing them. First time I've had that problem. Both phone and computer

A disappointing morning so far. I headed out to my kayak launch spot at el faro and it seems that the combination of high tides and high surf made the 4 miles of dirt and sand out to the point impassable. At least for me. Lots of mud and standing water. I followed a local towing a panga for a while but he came to an area that even he with his high clearance 4WD was hesitant about. He did continue on but I chose to abort. I might head up to Socorro or Tranquillo and look at conditions there but I'm afraid the surf is going to keep me on the beach today. Hope the beach road improves before Saturday or I will have to go to plan B, and I don't have a plan B.

Oh crap - well that puts a kink in my plans as well. I was thinking of sleeping out there to get an early morning start, and I don't have a plan B either.
When you get to the end of the road and take a left to the campground, Google Earth does show a road splitting off to the right that leads out to a point in the bay. May have to slog the kayak over some marsh though, but it would cut the paddle distance down tremendously over launching at the Mill.

Some more meat for the freezer today. I had two more on which I did a remote release at the side of the yak. In other words, they got away. I foot wrapped a cormorant that was not happy with me and bit me twice while I was trying to untangle him. Once in the middle finger, which I was most assuredly going to use on him once I got him unsnarled, and once on the top of my hand. Rabid birds.
The road to the lighthouse was worse this morning so I drove around to the backside of one of the volcanoes on the bay and found a nice launch spot there. Unfortunately it was still a 2.5 mile paddle to the area that I have been fishing. Against the tidal flow heading out and against the tidal flow coming back.21738

Got the best seat in the house - with the chef! I'm going to be hanging out here for awhile. I passed on the birthday wishes to Bob.

Tourney day in San Quintin. Miserable conditions this morning. A cool wind, heavy mist That may as well be called rain, and extreme low tide made for a tough morning of fishing. Due to the tide, I had to s
og through 300 yards of 3 inch water and 3 inch mud just to get my kayak to float. My usual spots were almost unfishable due to the wind, waves and tidal currents. I ended up tying off to various hard points on a floating boat house, a grounded panga and a sunken sail boat and just fan casting the area. Ended up with 3 halibut. Caught the largest one at about 10:00 and called it a day. Stopped off at Don Eddies to have Makobob measure it and then got cleaned up and had a siesta. In the lead at noon but the tourney closes at 6:00 pm.21745

Well, Rossman won the tournament with one of his three halibut. The only halibut caught. I only managed a bonefish.

Sounds like Herman Melville had a few synapses misfiring. The way he strings together his mixed metaphors makes me want to wander off to sit in the shade and open a cold beer. While a tiger's heart may connote a natural inclination, panting is a function of breathing. Velvet paws conceal claws, not fangs. Remorseless fangs lie beneath a cat's whiskers. Brilliancy of the ocean's skin? Ahoy mate! Bohemia, por favor!
Congratulations for winning the jackpot!

Sorry for the late post, YES Rossman was the winner, $300 USD, CONGRATULATIONS, should have been two years in a row.
Ross did his homework both years by PRE fishing the areas. Tight Lines and a big Thank You for all who participated.
