I read in the regulations booklet that vessels must carry a landing net. Does this apply to kayaks as well?

Why would it be different for kayaks...?
Yes...the regulations say that you are supposed to carry a net with an 18" opening when fishing in saltwater in order to help in the release of undersize fish...Many anglers just carry one of the Promar folding nets to be in compliance.

Seems the warden/s were not aware of the regulation.

A lot of time the application of the law is to the discretion of the wardens.

I believe if you have any fish with a minimum size limit you have to have as net. Mike

When I used to live in NorCal, this was often enforced, especially when salmon fishing. Most guys would have the net out in a rod holder. I've been asked once in the big bay. I'll usually bring a complying folding net and store down below.

I carry a folding promar net just to be legal and it's stored along side the bait tank or anywhere in the back of the kayak. I can't remember ever using it.

I have to confess to never carrying a net into the ocean on my kayak in 20+ years. I have in the bays tourney fishing. I have never heard of anyone being sited here in SoCal. Ideal release of short fish is never let em touch anything but water, especially these lil guys. :wsb: simple pliers on the shank of the hook and pop em loose.

I carry a net...its a Promar hookless that doesn't split fins...I've had to release small trap hooked fish and its seems easier with a net...the reg is as written.
And Andy is right about releasing small fish...best done at the side of the yak without handling them. Especially the little ones like that baby in his photo...its a Trout hook...

Before my Promar net I stashed a mesh net laundry bag from the dollar store in my tackle box. Regs don't define what an actual landing net is other than having an 18" opening. :D
