Fished with my dad out of Shelter Island from 7am to 2pm. We caught several spotties, sandbass, short halibut using Gulp Shrimp. At about 12 we hooked into some on the shrimp/squid rig on 25lb test. Fought it for over an hour and a half and it felt like dead weight at times. Every time it got near the yak it would go on another long run. It ended up snapping the line which was a bummer as it towed both yaks around the bay for a long time. Not sure if it was a ray or halibut. Any Ideas? I did see a pretty decent size Halibut caught by a guy in a tube with a Gulp Shrimp. Overall it was a great day to be out and the sun only made it better.

Bat Ray no doubt...sounds like a good day on the water with dad.

A halibut will keep running straight down to the bottom. If it "ran" it was at least NOT a halibut. You can be 99.9999999% sure it was a ray.

Sounds like a fun day. I tried South Bay, just managed to scratch up a few small spotties. I'm curious, was the float tuber you saw in the main part of the bay, or behind the island? I've been tubing South Bay a lot the past couple months, but figured the boat traffic up around Shelter Island would make it kind of hazardous.

He was in a inlet just south of the launch near the airport. I figured it was a ray. Was a crazy fight though!
