Favorite Knot for 40# Fluorocarbon

I just tied a Palomar knot connecting my 40# Blackwater fluorocarbon leader to a heavy Salas iron and it broke at one of the bends as I was pulling it tight.

I thought a Palomar knot was one of the high strength knots for this purpose, but now I'm not so sure.

I tend to use Palomar and San Diego knots a lot.

For connecting my 40# or 25# Blackwater directly to my 65# Spectre, I use a Royal Polaris knot.

What is your favorite knot for 40# fluorocarbon?

You did something wrong . That's why you always test them. The Palomar is probably the strongest for terminal tackle. San Diego may test out at 95% ? I use San Diego because it's easy to tie and easy to identify if incorrectly tied.

I've been doing an Alberto for braid to fluoro but I'm finding it very difficult to fully cinch down and almost always put a dab of superglue on it. No failed knots since using the glue...

I keep meaning to try the FG knot but haven't.

For terminal to hooks, swivels etc I've just been using Uni knots. I found the double-Uni for braid-to-fluoro was easy to tie but way too big.

And I recently discovered Tactical Angler clips. They're awesome for switching between different lures without cutting off and retying knots. Been using the 50lb variety with 40lb fluoro leader.

Edit: I saw after submitting my reply that you were asking specifically about terminal knots so forgive my sidetracking on braid/fluoro joins.

Tony pena knot for the braid to flouro connection.
The palomar knot for the jig. The most important part of the palomar is the cinch. You have to take your time and make sure the knot does not get too tight until the end.

There are a lot of different knots out there, but I stick with these three:

San Diego Jam - Used for all line to hook, swivel, iron, etc connections.

Alberto - Used for all line-to-line connections.

Spyder Hitch - Used for dropper loop/reverse dropper loop rig.

I have never had a problem with these personally but as mentioned above wetting and ensuring the knot is cinched down is pretty important.

SD, Alberto, and SH are my go to. Palomar is popular because it's easy. SD knot tests at over 100 percent knot strength and not that much harder to learn. And from personal experience I've had too many huge breakoffs using the palomar.

For 40#, always an SD jam knot to the hook or jig. The only thing that sucks about tying it onto a hook is that the hook isn't usually heavy enough to swing it around so you have to wrap it by hand. Easier to tie in the darkness, too.

From 2lb to 130lb this knot works. And if you can tie an overhand knot you can tie this one.

From 65lb braid to 40lb fluoro I use uni to uni with minimum of 6 turns on each side. At hook or lure end of fluoro I use a palomar knot 80% of the time an a San Diego Jam 20%.

This is my spectra to mono/fluoro knot, its has never, ever failed, busted, come undone, slipped, untied, unknotted, etc.


It is extremely easy to do, it can be done in seconds

Braided line to florocarbon RP or John Collins knot or Tony Pena. Mono to florocarbon or braid to braid double uni double raps of braided line
For jigs San Diego jam knot
For crank baits Rapala knot it has a loop
Loops surgions loops works for me
Braided line to swivel or hook palamar
80 up crimp 2 lead sleeves
Cant remember braking a knot.
