Snapped down on my thumb like an alligator. Luckily the teeth weren't too big, and lucky again it only held the grip for about 5 seconds. Had fins like an eel.

Sarcastic Fringehead.
But I thought they were more orange instead of yellow....maybe it's a juvenile.

That is definitely what it is. They are very common and very aggressive. They will strike at baits far larger than they are if they appear injured.

I thought you were trying to be funny. I finally looked it up. AKA reaper vampire creature. Nasty little critter.

I was afraid that would happen, but I was too busy when I replied to tell you I was being serious!

It starts out with a Midshipman. Kirk, was yours iridescent colors, or plain drab green?

That has to be what it was. I never got a good look at it, but I remember that really vivid green color inside his jaws...

Mine was dark drab and with the bright yellow gills, enormous mouth
And attitude when I tried to unhook him, I'm pretty sure it was a sarcastic fringe head.

It's a Sarcastic Fringehead. I caught one today too. The damn thing snapped down hard on my pliers. I knew right off the bat that it would be a bad idea to stick my fingers in its mouth.
