As I ponder installing a rectangle hatch on my yet to be purchased Outback (2017 or 2018) I've seen where some people have installed their rectangle hatch lengthwise with the kayak.
The claim is that the hatch can be opened while peddling without interference.

Has anyone here done this and how did it work for you?

I plan to install one soon. The way is shown in most YouTube videos.

I don't see any advantage of being able to paddle while the hatch is open.

It seems to me that all hatches should be kept close while on the way to prevent sudden flooding by an unexpected wave.

Octico, do you have to twist your legs out of the way to get the lid open?

What year is your kayak?

I was looking at newer year Outbacks yesterday with the same thought in mind -- they have a flatter deck with more space than my 2014 Outback. A rectangular hatch will fit on a 2014, but there is not much of a margin around the edges.

Another issue to consider is if the basket is going to fit properly.

The tackle box holder may fit easier.

I am hoping to be able to fit the basket in my 2013 Outback.
