We leave on the 20th of November to spend Thanksgiving in beautiful Asuncion. Fishing for yellows, world class calicos, bonita and corvina. We return 1 December, plan on camping at Rossman's place, and maybe taking a side trip to Punta Eugenia and or Punta Quebrada to fish and beach camp.

I'd like to come along!
I'll be leaving San Diego on Sat. 18th and plan on taking two days to get to B.Asuncion.
I'll have my truck with Callen Camper and will trailer my PA14.
I like to cross at Tecate and drive down to San Felipe through La Rumorosa. Will either camp outside of San Felipe at one of the many spots there or push it on to camp off the road to Calmajue wash.
Most likely will have my dirtbike on the bumper for beer runs or beach/shore fishing.
Excited for this one!

This is starting to look like a great group of pescadores. Really looking forward to some visitors. Couple tanks of fuel and you are here and there's plenty of room so come on down.
For those of you that don't follow me on FB, I bought a little tin boat a few months ago to extend my range. I still kayak a bit but lately I have been exploring the offshore scene and last week I had some good success on tuna and dorado. Today I am going out to begin my hunt for a wahoo. The locals do not remember ever seeing tuna in July so this may be shaping up to be a good season for the exotics

Yes!
Super excited for this trip - try not to laugh but I've never caught a yellowtail. Hoping this will be the trip to take care of that.
If anybody has a list of must-have jigs or any other gear that I should have please post it so that I can get stocked up.
Quick question - do you guys try to bring fillets home? If so do you freeze it there or is there an ice factory to load up the coolers in town?
Also, hope you don't mind, but it's looking like I'm going to have a fishing buddy come along with me.
He's actually one of my past students (I'm a high school chem teacher) and the dude most responsible for getting me crazy about kayak fishing.
I think he's on this site as petethefishboy - he'll probably chime in but he's a fish crazy hombre and we began laying down plans tonight for the trip.
Thanks for setting all this up can't wait to meet you all!

CON KSO your friend Pete has been added to the MASTER list. Welcome aboard. BUT be prepaired to bring crockadiles, salas 6xjr in blue and white and scramble egg single hook if you can find them. Plastics for the big calicos too.
BTW you and Pete will need to plan, and prepair a dinner one night for the whole crew. Tight Lines amigos.

I'll chime in with tackle recommendations for down here. For heavy jigs I mainly fish the Salas 6x Jr. The only color the locals use are the blue and white. I also use them but have had some good success on the green and yellow, and the scrambled egg pattern. I also use Megabaits a lot. Actually they are megabait look alikes. I find the original Megabaits have very poor trebles and split rings so I get knock offs here: http://stores.ebay.com/alltackledepot2010?_trksid=p2047675.l2563. You can get 16 for like 30 bucks and they have much better trebles and split rings. 3.5 oz is what I use. You will get yellowtail action on these and a lot of bycatch like calicos, sheepshead, sand bass and whitefish. Shiny Krocodiles type spoons can be used off the beach or pretty much everywhere. I get mine at the same site listed above. Your favorite plastics will work fine down here but you will go through a lot of them because the calico are everywhere and voracious. For trolling, I use the X Rap magnum 30 however I find they can't be used effectively on a kayak as you really need depth and speed to trigger a bite. That is pretty much it for my tackle box. If it is shiny and/or wiggles, it will probably get bit. I do not use live bait mainly because there has not been much around. However right now the whole area is choked with sardine and mackerel so who knows what November will be like.
BTW Absolutely zero problem on my end with you bringing someone else along. Plenty of room to set up at my place. It will be sort of like camping in your back yard. Camping but still have the use of the indoor facilities.

We usually only keep fish to eat down here but ice is available here and if your fish are caught in the last couple of days ice works. Ross might let you freeze your fish at his place. Pm him and ask. Also ask him if there is anything you can bring down for him. Tight Lines amigos.

I've got conventional gear but I'm planning on fly fishing as well - anybody else gonna chuck feathers? If you've got any data on patterns that work - I'm all ears.
Put us down for cheeseburgers for our dinner night.
Thanks Rossman for the invite and use of facilities. With the exception of bathroom/toilet facilities my truck is Baja-camping ready.

I'll be throwing the fly. I primarily use something like a size 1/0 yak hair fly or clouser. Blue/White, Green/White or Black/White. I'll take an 8WT and a 10WT. Tippet no lighter than 20lb. I typically use 25lb. They are not line shy and there are lots of toothy critters.

Exactly what Sivak said, Clousers, clousers, and more clousers. I remember being in Gonzaga last October and I had 3 full boxes of flies tied for the trip and I never used anything but Chartreuse/white and white/white clousers the entire trip. Deceivers also work really well especially if you end up flyfishing from the Yak....
Make sure you tie a bunch of different sizes, I have some as small as 1 inch and as large as 4.5 inches.
heres my Gonzaga Bay yellowtail, first on the fly and first from the yak on a 1.5 inch chartreuse/white clouser.

In general, are you tying longer clousers for down there - say 4 - 5" long?
Also- I'm assuming full sinking line?
My heavier 8 and 10wts are parked outside of La Paz but I do have an Orvis Frequent Flyer 8wt that I'll bring and a TFO Mangrove 6wt.

Yes! That's killer - I'd be stoked to catch little yellowtail like that all day long. I'll tie up a bunch of clousers in the lengths and colors you mentioned. My SD Bay flyfishing instincts say to tie up some orange and brown ones as well. But I know the colors you mentioned are solid for Baja, in June I fished islands off of La Paz and, you're right, the best flies were chartreuse and white.

You might try the larger flies but there is usually MICRO bait that they are feeding on, so bring both. I would concentrate in more of the 1-2.5 inch then 2-4 or 5. Full sink or heavy shooting line, I use a shooting head, but a lot of the better fly fishermen use a floating line. If the roosters show again this year an 8 wt might not do the job, I think a couple were DEMOLISHED last year. We got 35 roosters from 35-60+ pounds last summer. And another 35 from 1-20# from the beach. The big boys were ALL caught at the island. Tight Lines amigo.

Ill probably bring down a little emergency kit in case I run low on something.

Ok so I just bought a TFO BVK 10 wt fly rod and a Hatch Finatic 9+ hopefully this will work ok, will try our on the October trips but really wanted it for Asuncion Calicos.
Asuncion trip might be epic this year, tuna, wahoo, Yellows, bonito and Calicos hope everyone is ready or getting their gear in order. Full thanksgiving dinner at Rossman's place, cooked by our chef Jeff. Turkey with all the trimmings. But this is a fishing trip so if the yellows are cooperating we will fish Asuncion HARD. If slow we could take a side trip to Punta Quebrada, Punta Eugenia or Laguna Coyote or????? AND I expect to do some fossil hunting, need more shark teeth and petrefied sand dollars. I was just trying to look up calico patterns for flies I wanted to start tying for Asuncion trip - would it be possible to post up a couple pics of your calico flies? Or if you've got a link to point me to for calico fly recipes/tying videos that would be awesome.
I have the BVK 8wt and a TFO Clouser 10wt but they are both at my friends place down in La Ventana (outside of La Paz) I'm heading down there in either Sept. or November (before our trip) so I leave them with my buddy since you can't carry them onto the plane anymore.
I love the 8wt BVK - the 10wt with my Reddington Behemoth reel on it get's tiring - specially since I'm throwing full sinking 450grain Jim Teeny lines with are beastly.
BTW that Hatch is a beautiful reel! I have Lamson Liquid reels on all my rods except for the 10wt - they're relatively cheap and the set-up I bought comes with two extra spools! I mis-treat them and they keep working.
I'm going to bring the 8 and 6 wt for the Calicos at Asuncion - if they die there, so be it.
Can't wait for that trip!

My favorite fly for just about everything bigger than a bonefish is the Game Changer articulated sardine. My first trip out with one of these I was hammering the calicos out at Zuniga jetty nearly every cast. In fact, that same fly is still on my 10 Wt over a year later - it holds up very well. Pretty easy to tie once you have the spine pieces to tie with. I found that if you tie a line to the hook eye and the other end to an overhead nail - if you pull straight down on the tail of the fly it is much easier to shape into a fish form using small scissors.
Here is a video on tying it: https://youtu.be/C4hsAERPZ4s

I'll post up some of the flies that im gonna send to bob in a few days, but there are a few good resources on the web to look at besides BWE for calico fly patterns.
Dig around at fliflicker.com that's the socal flyfishing forum.
Also google Vaughn Podmore he has a flyfishing charter out of long beach that goes to catalina and the Podmore Anchovie is a legit calico pattern.

You will need a passport to get the FMM. You can get the FMM at either at the the border Immigration office or can be purchased online. Either way you have to stop at Immigration to purchase or have it stamped. Generally a quick process.. A US passport is good for 10 years from date of issue. If you don't have a passport you better start that process now because unless you expedite it, at a higher cost, it can take a couple months. The FMM is good for up to 180 days. Mexican car insurance is also required. You will only be asked for proof of that if you are in an accident. Getting back into the states only requires a passport and patience.

Here's a trophy for the largest yellowtail taken over Thanksgiving in Asuncion. I am commissioning the guy to do one for Calico Bass too but I may have to bust him out of re-hab .

Do you know what kind of rock he makes these carvings out of? What kind of tools? How long does it take to carve them? Nice work.

He uses a hammer and chisel and some kind of electric grinder. The rock is a come out of a local quarry and is used for patios and walkways. I think it is called "roka laya". He works fairly quickly. Something like this would take a couple days to complete. Maybe three because there is some staining involved

Very interesting. What are the approximate dimensions of this piece? What does he charge for something like this?

Although I have not heard it from Makobob as yet, it looks like he will not be making the trip this year. I just wanted to assure everyone that was planning to come down that I am still planning on seeing as many as possible make it down and I'll be fishing daily and hope you all can join me.
Yesterday's catch from the tin boat.

Rossman in the immortaliZed words of greggo "you suck green donkey di*$!" I bet the adrenaline was going solo with that skinny at the gunnels.
Re shopping the pix. Too bad he cant start the upload before the image is even taken much less processed.

But I'm glad I didn't, bone on bone, with time the pain eventually went away, now it's just numb, and I need two different sizes shoes and it causes me to walk bull legged. Affecting my hip. Falling off a roof breaking my tibia probably didn't help either.

Bob, I hope you are doing well. You have to stop by at the restaurant on your way back from Mako Villa.

Getting close to the kick-off day for Thanksgiving at Rossman's casita.
I'm curious about how many are still a solid "go" for this trip.
I am leaving early Saturday morning and will cross at Tecate, head through San Felipe and plan on stopping at either Gonzaga or camp at the hotsprings campground at Puertocitos.
So maybe this is a bit of a roll call... who's still in?
