Greetings all,

Its been a bit since I have posted anything, so I thought I would share a recent trip.

The launch was flat and glassy and the weather was mild with some decent fog and the moon was in a Waxing Gibbous phase. There was tuna crab scattered around, the water visibility was great and water temp was ~62°F.

I made half a dozen greenbacks fairly quickly and headed out.
In about ~75 ft of water I sent down one greenback on the dropper loop and flylined another behind the kayak. The bait on the bottom was getting a little spooked when all of the sudden the flyline started screaming.

I adjusted the drag on the flyline and reeled in the dropper loop. Right away I knew it was a yellow, based on the run and head shakes. The fish went straight for a nearby lobster pot and then we had a nice back and forth. After a couple solid runs, I buttoned down the drag and got the fish to color. A solid yellow wrapped in rope. I waited for my shot and sank the gaff.

After pulling the fish aboard, I noticed the hook was set through the mouth and next to the gil plate. I immediately bled and gutted the fish and threw it on the back of my Revo 16 and headed in.

I landed before 8am, took a couple pics and was home early to surprise the wife and kids.

The fished ended up at 32lbs after being bled and gutted. I pulled off some thick collars, cut some fresh chunks for dinner and vac/sealed the rest off.

Here is some video action, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcLlES-OAZI) if you'd like to watch!

Wishing everyone out there a healthy, happy and hopeful 2018!

Cheers,

Todd

Thanks for the details! I always wanted to use a swivel to reduce line twist. I assume that's why you use one? My braid is all twisted up now.

Congrats on the fish!

So after talked to you and headed back over towards weather buoy I made a bunch of bait and dropped a dropper loop n flyline, 20yds out of the preserve I started marking, and boom dropper goes off! 2 hours late and half way back to the spot we chatted I surface an easy 150-200lb BSB! Safely revived as I cut my line a foot from his mouth and he slow decended back to the depths! First BSB, unfortunately phone was in truck due to waterproof case being broke( I’ve ruined 2 phones-$200 each in insurance so no pics :( I was trying to radio you but was a lot of static!

I’m setting up my GoPro for next trip! I’ll give u a shout when the wifey will let out next( toddler time next weekend )!!!

Here’s mine from the 22nd.

Cheers on a big brother.

Congrats, really nice fish. Went out on the 26th but bait was hard to find after the first greenback With all the pesky dogs around I mostly trolled a Rapala greenback for nada. Saw some good Hali marks but the dog close by made me not want to loose the only live greenback I had.

Wow! What a nice yellowtail, and a great video. Congratulations!

That's a huge fish to catch on a yak. It's interesting to see how you flung it across the back deck of your Revo 16 behind the bait tank. I'll keep that in mind for my 13.

Thanks everyone for the congrats!

Congrats on the fish!

I do find that I get a little less line twist with a swivel, but I really like being able to quickly switch rigs and just cut the spectra and then attach a pre-tied setup. I just attach the spectra to the swivel. You can also switch from a flyline to carolina rig really easily.

I also like have the shorter leader vs a long top shot, so i can saw through the kelp.

Cheers!

Nicely done! Hopefully I could make a trip to LJ in 2018. If anyone comes up to the bay area for kayak salmon and lingcod I am happy to show around.
