View Full Version : Hookup Baits - Thoughts?

I've seen many of you using these baits and having some success. That being said I was looking into trying some and think I've just changed my mind after I found this article about the owner of the company.

Apparently, he's been convicted of poaching in the Yosemeti national parks as well as previous citations.

Note: This thread is just for discussion if you would ethically buy them or if there's additional information you may know. Solely for discussion and is not intended to be a flame thread.

Thoughts?

Personally, I prefer not to support someone who has a blatant disregard for conservation of our resources but that might just be my California mentality. At the same time, that was 8 years ago and people can change.

Biggest surprise in that article is how lenient the sentencing was, must have been a plea bargain.

Lets keep this a little more civil than over there........... to buy or not is still an independent choice.

Agreed with you. I understand that type of sentence for an offence or two offences. Had to be a plea deal.

Also hoping to keep it civil here. We're all adults.

"24 months of unsupervised probation"---What the hell good does that do?

The other problem is that most of the public does not hear about crime like this.

They should make the violators pay for TV Public Service Announcements so a lot of people including the future potential poachers get the warning.

1. That National Park Service article sounds way overmodulated to me, as a blanket PR-hype threat to everyone in general that they are bad-ass and they are going to bust you without mercy and crush you like a bug.

2. It sounds like the people they went after as alleged criminals were convicted as part of a plea bargain on charges much less than all the wild innuendo in the first half of the article.

3. If it was tried, convicted and punished, ... and therefore resolved several years ago, then why rehash this again now as a new blog trial and punishment based on gossip, NPS hype, propaganda and unfounded, non-legal speculation that was not part of the original conviction, sentence and punishment?

It's done. Stick a fork in it.

From what I understand, chad has paid his debt to society, and is still paying for it with bad press....and will probably pay for it the rest of his life. I think he learned his lesson and will likely never do it again so as long as he's not a complete dumbass...which he's probably not at this point...

I think he spent some time in big house and paid a huge fine...so far it seems that he is trying to make things right by supporting the fishing community. Whether it's his time, products and or his own money, he has tried to make amends.

(Edit: Ok maybe he didn't have to spend time in the big house...but he still had to pay the fine and probation).

As far as his hookup baits go... From what I understand they work and work well. If you don't want to support him or his business for this reason, obviously that's completely up to you. He has a second chance to do things right this time. He is definitely under the microscope, and probably will be forever.

So as long as he is on the strait and narrow now...I think he should get a second chance...:cheers1:

What say you?

He is trying to make good...
He has a grom of the month drawing where he picks a winner and takes the kid and his dad fishing at his expense each month.
He donates to CCA CAL in many ways.
He works with Anglers Chronicles with their shoe donations to Mexico.
He has been under the microscope with all the excellent finishes he and Al had in the bass tourneys last year and I've talked to the other So Cal Tourney directors and they all feel that he's playing fair...

When I was in the film biz I had a guy that was on my crew that had spent some time in the Louisiana pen system for a number of years for a major crime...He was one of my most trusted and best employees for about 15 years until he died...
Sometimes you just have to give a guy another chance...Trust me... I was no angel when I was young...!:notworthy: ;)
Just MHO...:notworthy::notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

You can either buy his baits or decide not to but in my humble opinion there is no need to bash him again...This is OLD news...!

I agree with most of the posts here. Once the debt to society is paid, it's all good until he does it again.

God Knows there are several of us here who should have probably done hard time for the things we did when we were younger. I thank him daily for making me smart enough not to get caught when I was young and smart enough to know that I was going to get caught at some point. Changed ways, and haven't looked back.

I'm with it, thanks for the information, Denis...Likely will not purchase these now just with the knowledge & ample amounts of substitutes.. Hey just because they went to prison for life does not mean they are no longer a Murderer? Sure we all make mistakes but with the premeditation there it shows character, and that's not at all the kind of person I am or want my children to be.. Plus the things are an arm and a leg for a piece of plastic that will get tore on one good bite. I understand you can't run a business giving away products but, I'm not to sure about the, "Giving Back to the fishing community.."

Who the hell am I anyways? God fishing is too slow!! :D:the_finger:

I politely disagree. Anyone whom poaches knowingly and is prosecuted should be banned from ever obtaining a recreational license of any type in their lifetime.. If this were the case, and we all knew, do you think people would still Poach? Not nearly as many!!

I buy them from time to time. The guy paid for his crime. I know there’s plenty of people here who pull up a small rockfish and don’t keep it, or others who have taken undersized or not in season fish either on purpose or ignorance of law. These resources are all of ours and we need to keep each other accountable. Taking an animal or fish or even plants illegally doesn’t make someone a terrible person or unworthy of change.
To me things like this spark a bigger question about conservation with better public awareness and regulations backed by good science. My .02

This has been hashed over plenty in another San Diego fishing forum.

I'm of the opinion that he did it, got caught, owned up to it and paid his debt.

The only reason I won't buy them is that they are so damned expensive and they don't last more than two fish! But I've seen them swim, and they sure do work.
Wish he would have donated some to our CCA grab bags, cause that's what I would have tried...

A bit harsh in my opinion but I see where you are coming from. More severe penalties would be more of a deterrence for people. I think this was exemplified pretty well on decision for revocation of the commercial fishing license for 5 years of the Pacific Star back in February. Which IMO is pretty much a death sentence for a sport fishing operation.

I think this more of a sociological issue and question on whether people are capable of change. If a man commits a crime should he be robbed of his potential to do good in the future? Life is a learning experience and everyone makes mistakes. Most learn through their mistakes, so paying for yours for the rest of your life seems a bit severe and does not offer the opportunity to learn.

So assuming he has learned his lesson and is doing good for the fishing community, do you believe in second chances?

Sav-On Tackle has a version of a tube bait that I tried two weeks ago down at La Jolla.

I was amazed at the action. Three rockfish and a calico for that day.

*Full disclosure I was given a free sample of these new baits but I think I was just a lucky customer that asked at the right time and not affiliated with the shop in other way.

In any case there are close alternatives available on the market and these things work.

Good information to take into consideration when supporting a business. My future purchases will not include this company. Yes, second chances are of course a nice thing to do if you believe the crime is acceptable enough to forgive...

I agree with this. I wouldn't let my children play at a convicted sex offender's house once his "debt" is paid.

And neither would I. I also probably would not knowingly let a previous poacher store his catch in my cooler. But if the bait works, it works. So he poached, and paid his debt. That shouldn't mean that he should not be able to operate a business.

I would support legislation that restricted a convicted poacher's ability to get a fishing/hunting license for a period of time. Not that many poachers give crap about being licensed, anyway. I see people taking short fish on the piers all the time. Usually because of ignorance, but most unlicensed fisherman have not taken the time to know what is what and when what fish can be taken.

Some dude was going to keep an 2 foot Leo, in San Clem the other day. I let him know, with as few curse words as possible, that he needed to throw that fish back ASAP. He told me there was no size limit on Leos. I told him to throw it back, then look it up. ANd that If I was wrong, I would buy him a case of beer. He tossed it back and we parted ways. About an hour later he walked back by me, and dropped off a six pack of Ballast Point Sculipn IPA, as a way to say thanks for the info. Then I told him alcohol was not allowed on the pier. Just kidding, I didn't say that last part.....

I havent tried them personally but as a bass/artificial lure focused angler, I know there is a ton of hype behind the brand.

Would I decide to buy a product based on the history behind the proprietor? Possibly. But I guarantee a lot of Americans are blind to the past of A LOT of the business and people they support. Case and point: Donald. (https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2016/9/28/12904136/donald-trump-corrupt)

To those of you snidely lambasting Denis for somewhat innocuously starting a conversation without any real commentary, you realize you’re doing the exact thing you’re giving him shit for, right? You realize that, right? Right?

Capitalist society, guys. When you start a business, you build a brand.
You market that brand. That brand sells your product.

Your brand is subject to scrutiny. I say scrutinize away.

Personally, I don’t fish with poachers. I think it’s an easy choice to make and I think it can be telling of character.

I’m not here to pass judgment on the guy who owns the company, but I’m damn sure not here to pass judgment on the guy who shared the information about the guy who owns the company.

Ok, I'm still thinking about your choice of words and what it might have to do with anything we are talking about in this forum of public opinion.

Since you requested a discussion, I would like to contribute some further thoughts.

Given:

We have laws defined and imposed on us by people who work for the government in government provided jobs with government provided infrastructure and budgets (buildings, offices, fresh new trucks and boats with lots of gadgets, endless numbers of computers and expensive new equipment, etc., etc., etc., that is all very eco-unfriendly.)

Given:

We have a so-called "justice" system of prosecutors, defenders and judges that is so damned overloaded with frivolous paper-shuffling that it has almost come to a stand-still, and it has been so bent out of shape by laws and prospecting lawyers that the "justice" of it's original purpose has to a large extent been lost.

Given:

What is or is not "poaching" is defined by law, mostly by ever-growing bureaucracies that keep expanding to justify their purpose and keep hiring more and more people into government jobs that cost far more than they produce, and that consume vast amounts of precious resources very inefficiently in the process. Both natural resources consumed and polluted or destroyed by their infrastructure, and societal resources in terms of over-taxation and over-regulation of the private sector that supports their very expensive parasitic existence.

Given:

As human beings, if humanity is to survive, we have a higher level of moral laws to consider seriously and wisely. These are laws of nature, or laws under God, or laws of what's right and wrong in living together as a society and a culture in ways that might help us secure a better future for ourselves and for humanity that follows after we are gone. As human beings we have the ability to ponder and perhaps understand the importance of protecting and managing the environment in which we live. This includes our environment in nature, in application of the knowledge and experience we accumulate as individuals, in the institutions of civil society that helps bind and lubricate us together as a nation of citizens and as a culture, and our environment of crass politics of ego, greed and power that bends everything the hell out of shape.

Therefore:

To this end, we must do our best to recognize and make personal decisions and personal choices to the best of our ability that will preserve, replace and build further the precious resources that sustain us, and that will improve our chances of managing and surviving into the future as nations, as cultures and as humans beings.

Whether what we have done is defined as dastardly "poaching" (spitooey!) or legal sport fishing because of some piece of paper we paid for, or because of what side of some arbitrary line we might be on, why are we destroying the lives of so many magnificent living creatures at all? Why do we hunt and fish with such lust and passion to turn the natural wildlife around us into tasty fish tacos?

When we catch a 21" fish that must be 22" according to law, and we throw it back on the water to die or to be scooped up by a bird, which technical laws of some government bureaucracy have we obeyed and which moral laws of nature have we broken, ... or not? Where is our proper position in the food chain and under the laws of Natural Selection and Darwinism. After all, we are born as omnivores, right? So is it our natural purpose to kill and be killed? Perhaps this is where the word "hypocrisy" might come in. This is something we have to define for ourselves.

After someone has been arrested, tried and punished under government regulations and laws, why is it then proper, or moral or just to rehash this subject again in the court of public opinion by dredging up an old character assassination propaganda article by the National Park Service because you could link it to the name of an individual who is local and among us as a fellow fishing enthusiast, and then attack him again by calling out the name of his business and livelihood in the title of this thread? The work he does in his business not only helps support him and his family, but by surviving in the private sector, he no doubt pays huge amounts of taxes (direct, indirect and hidden), that help support the bloated armies of government workers who do little or nothing to support themselves at very great expense to taxpayers and a free society in general.

Obviously you have stirred up some passions here and you have several people who want to support your call for a boycott to punish this person further. Again, we have to ponder and decide for ourselves what is right or wrong, legally and morally, and how we want to define our own lives as good citizens and thoughtful human beings who are trying to do the right things in life. Thinking about the meaning of hypocrisy and how it might apply to the conversation of this thread is good food for thought. No doubt about that.

Technically, legally, as far as attacking a person's reputation and trying to destroy the income of his business, and knowing the way lawyers like to stir things up with the kinds of leverage they can apply, I would guess you are already in the legal gray zone here. If I was the target of your personal attack myself, I might want to rightfully lash back, legally and morally, to protect myself, my family, my business and my means of support. Just trying to see the bigger picture here and avoid making problems worse.

This shit flies all directions and can splatter everyone. Opinions vary widely.

Lets go destroy more old, huge, beautiful, delicious, innocent fish legally.

I'd rather boycott Hewlett Packard, REI and Stone Mountain Brewing for their support of MLPAs. And now Dicks for their anti-2nd amendment activities.

And when Stone Mountain says they did not know the group they were funding was actively campaigning for closure, well, that is 180 degrees from their credo of lambasting those that are "being led by the nose".

As previously said, I have more issue with the price tag. I have enough gear for fish to ignore.

This was surprisingly candid and I appreciate your contribution to the discussion. I am with on the most of the "givens" of your post. I too agree with the gray area of law and interpretation of law stemming from bureaucracy.

To answer your question on why bring it up is because that's the best way to develop ideas for me. To discuss them and be open to outside opinion. Reading the article, a judgement is made by pooling other peoples experiences, knowledge and opinions I am better able to make a better judgement.

That being said a little ways into the "Therefore" I still understand where you're coming from but would like to add.

There's a difference in grey area offences that tread the line and clear disregard for the line. Here comes another OPINION, its not necessarily about a single offence for me, according to the article the man killed multiple bucks in a protected area (repeated) and claimed records. Well to me that's just plain old cheating and unfair to the other hunters who abide by the law and do not have the same fair chance at the record. I compare this to fishing la jolla during a bay only tournament then coming back to the bay and claiming you caught your 37 lb yellowtail in the bay. But I for one, believe in second chances as I've made mistakes and I do not want to be judged for them but by how I have adjusted my course as a result.

I've actually changed my opinion throughout this thread to a more neutral one, nor boycott nor buy. But there was no way for me to lead to change of opinion without additional information. This is why I appreciate an open discussion and the other guys who actually know what's happened in the last 8 years. Although old news to some, this is new to me as I've never seen or heard it before.

Every consumer has a right to make their own informed decisions and choose what business to support with their hard earned money.

P.S. There is never any call to boycott the product (not my intention), merely stated that I didn't think I would purchase(personal choice) it given the limited information available to me.

Also, I don't consider posting an article and an opinion a personal attack. An attack would be pushing one side of a narrative and I feel I have opened this up for discussion from both sides as well as a ideological debate.

Anyways - hope this comes off right as it often doesn't through written word.

Fish on and Tight Lines.

I have enough gear for fish to ignore.

This is gold :D

Ya'll make me laugh sometimes.

Personally, Thank goodness for second chances! And that's all I needed was a second chance. Learn from your mistakes. Or don't get caught!

Now in regards to the "HOOK-UP BAITS"... I do a lot of surf fishing as well so I use these artificials on the yak and on the beach. But I like Lucky Craft's more when on the beach. So when I go surf fishing my Son has a Hook-up bait and I have the LC to see what is biting what. So far this year I am skunked and my Son has three Halibut.

We also tried them on the water in the lagoon (C'bad) and he went for about 10 fish and I caught 1.

So they do work.

I like talking more about fishing than politics...Just sayin'. :cheers1:

I politely disagree. Anyone whom poaches knowingly and is prosecuted should be banned from ever obtaining a recreational license of any type in their lifetime.. If this were the case, and we all knew, do you think people would still Poach? Not nearly as many!!

Everyone gets a second chance to do right. Doesnt stop me from using the baits as long as I know I'm compliant. How about this latest bust by the DFG? Will Red Rooster 3 be boycotted by their mistake?

Awhile ago I bought a couple packs for fishing in the harbor. Hooks bent/broke too easy in my opinion for how expensive they are. And if the fish are biting the hook up bait you can get them to bite a number of other things just as well for half the cost. Nothing magical about it. I won't be buying them again. Fishing is suddenly the cool thing to do it seems. With what seems like an influx of new folks the timing is right and those folks see people getting bit on the baits plastered all over social media and probably have some misconception that the need those baits to get bit. Can't knock the guy for capitalizing on the current situation.

I understand he has been "punished" and fined and all of that has been paid. I am also for second chances and believe people can change and should be given the opportunity to do so.

However, the he poached 3 deer in the park. Involved his kid in the whole thing as well as a couple other guys. Glassed up the rangers to avoid them. Took a warden 6 days to track them down. They covered up the evidence. The whole thing was just so intentional and so far from a mistake.

I personally have no desire to support someone like that changed or not, debt paid or not. I also wouldn't ever dare judge anyone that doesn't mind supporting him and his business and legitimate activities and current support of the industry. His fine was something like $50,000 dollars, not a lot of people have that kind of money just laying around. In some strange way my mind goes to the place of, every dollar earned from the bait company goes toward recouping the cost of that fine. I fully realize that is irrational and probably isn't the case. But I can't help but feel a debt isn't paid if you don't bare the whole burden.

I still maintain that the only way to reduce poaching is by public awareness.
Educating the newbies is another important avenue.
There should be Public Service Announcement paid by the poachers.

A father that poaches is one thing.
However; if he teaches his kids that it is ok to ignore the law. That is unforgivable.

Anyone catch Angler Chronicles this past weekend? Sergio was up in BC and had our boy from Hook Up Baits with him. Sergio typically talks a lot about conservation but was pretty quiet on that front this episode. I wonder if that was intentional....

Andy Cates is a Legend...

...any relation to (the also legendary) Phoebe Cates?

I have used them and have had nothing but success, one (if not THE) best baits I have ever used. He was convicted and served his punishment.

They work, that's for sure. But so does a lot of other stuff out there.....

Since this thread is being revived, I wanted to share an assumption that I had dispelled recently...

I had assumed the tube style baits were injection molded, as I know that’s how gitzits are made. I also have had very little luck with Gitzits in trying alternatives ( wanted something in the 3 to 4 ounce range that did not cost 20 bucks)

I assumed there was some sort of injection mold they had manufactured specifically for this bait... would explain why they’re so damn expensive.

Nah...

This mom on BD makes them by the dozen and they’re *dead* simple.

There is a dude on one of the facebook groups that makes Hookup knockoffs...in the bait/lure industry, that isn't a negative connotation at all. How many people make senko or fluke baits now?

Anyway, when I called them a knockoff, he snapped back at me and sent a shit message. I refuse to buy from him now knowing his customer demeanor absolutely sucks.

What was this thread originally about again???

I agree with most of the previous posts. The guy made some mistakes and has paid for them. I have actually met Chad and his wife several times and they are very nice people.

I fish Hookup Baits all of the time and they crush it. Just about every species; tuna, yellowtail, WSB, bottom fish, etc.

They work when nothing else will.

The fishing industry is a tough business. I have a friend that started a new jig company making these :jig: because he was tired of paying $8-$10 for a painted piece of lead with a hook. He has told me that the big boys (i.e. Tady, Sumo, etc.) have done nothing but try to undercut and push him out of the business. As such, I don't fault him for pursuing a patent to protect his business.

I do wish they were more durable.

plastic too fragile and often the hook tears the tube or tube hooks itself.

would be better if they lasted longer.

Just give them a damn try. They been out a long time for us to keep goin over this.
Yes, they work.
Yes, they break down easy.
Yes, a bit expensive but so is most other baits nowadays ever since fishing is the cool thing to do now....
Yes, he made a mistake, no justifying it but are we all perfect?
Bottom line, they work and you just buying something that gets you bit.

Thoughts?

https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/news/poachers08.htm

Personally, I prefer not to support someone who has a blatant disregard for conservation of our resources but that might just be my California mentality. At the same time, that was 8 years ago and people can change.

I use them, not exclusively though. They work well. I usually get a few packs at the Fred Hall Show or some other discount opportunity. Much like any plastics, they get beat up pretty easy, especially if a Bonito or Barracuda gets a hold of them. I've caught yellowtail and big bass on them and some random rockfish.

As far as who makes them, I could care less. He's not under indictment, incarcerated, or on a terror watch list. It's not like I'm funding some organization that supports the overthrow of the government or advocates harm to our fellow citizens. He just seems like some guy who may have gone through some knucklehead phase in his life and moved on. I just retired from a career in law enforcement. I also spent 4 years in the military. I've seen much worse than this guy.

I don't see this as supporting someone that has a blatant disregard for conservation. I see this as me buying a tool that works.

:luxhello:1.

On May 25th, 2010, Narasky pled guilty to hunting in Yosemite National Park and possession of a weapon in the park. He was sentenced to a $7,500 fine, 24 months of unsupervised probation and forfeiture of all of his hunting equipment seized in the field. Additionally, Narasky agreed to stay outside of Yosemite National Park's boundaries for the duration of his probation.

On May 25th, 2010, Chris Gierlich pled guilty to 14 of 17 counts in Federal Court. These counts included three counts of hunting within Yosemite National Park, three counts of violating the Lacey Act and three counts of possession of a weapon within Yosemite National Park.

On May 25th, 2010, Chad Gierlich pled guilty to nine of 17 counts in Federal Court. These counts included three counts of hunting within Yosemite National Park, three counts of violating the Lacey Act and three counts of possession of a weapon within Yosemite National Park.

Chad Gierlich, Chris Gierlich, Kyle Narasky received sentences from Mono County Judge Stan Eller including up to 60 days in jail, between two and ten years hunting license revocation, three years probation, $1,000 fine, up to 200 hours community service.

On Tuesday, October 19th, 2010, Chad and Chris Gierlich were sentenced in Federal Court. Chris received sentencing including five years of supervised probation, 250 hours of community service, and 45 days of house arrest. Additionally, Chris is prohibited from hunting within the United States for five years, is not allowed to be in the presence of anyone hunting, and is not allowed to possess a bow and arrow.

Chad Gierlich’s sentence in federal court included five years of supervised probation and a $52,368 fine. Additionally, Chad is prohibited from hunting within the United States for five years, prohibited from being in the presence of other hunters, and is not allowed to possess a bow and arrow. He is not allowed in Yosemite for the duration of his probation.

I wouldn't call that a little mistake. This is a guy that doesn't care about anything but himself. As far as hook up baits? I don't know what all the hype is about. Tube baits with garlic scent has been around forever in trout fishing, let alone bass and ocean.

He did one bad thing on one day. Just because you post six different copies of a google search doesn’t make it six times worse.

I believe in the regulations and follow them just like most of us do. But come on, the guy shot a couple deer on the wrong side of a government line. Got caught, paid a disproportionate price. Now he’s trying to be an entreprenuer and do good.

I don’t think a witch hunt is appropriate here.

A federal search warrant was executed on the electronic media found in the field. The evidence secured as a result of this search warrant led to the execution of a federal search warrant of Chad Gierlich's residence on January 11th, 2009. This search warrant was executed by NPS Special Agents and Rangers and Wardens of the California Department of Fish and Game. More evidence was seized during the execution of this search warrant including computers and the heads of two deer killed in Yosemite National Park in 2005 and 2007. Over the years, the Gierlichs had killed five trophy deer in Yosemite National Park.

You won’t ever see me using them. As an avid hunter AND fisherman i can’t put money in someone’s pocket who knowingly poached on MULTIPLE occasions and took his kids. Also submitted deer that were poached as records in other states!!! His debt to the courts may be paid but his debt as a sportsman will never be repaid. His boats are mainly marketed to kids for a reason. Not to mention they are freaking tube baits.... everyone acts like they are something new. They have been around for years. Go pick yourself up a pack of gizit tubes and fish away.

Boy Oh Boy...there must be a lot of Angels out there that have never done anything wrong in their lives...I'd like to meet a few of you perfect people...!!!:notworthy::notworthy::notworthy:

Never speed, steal, lie, cheat on your taxes, or waste the resources...Yea Right...!!!

This guy poached...He didn't sell drugs, beat someone up, murder someone or steal a car...he poached and payed his dues and he's trying to make a successful business! Give the guy a break or don't buy his product...it's as simple as that...NO NEED TO BEAT A DEAD HORSE...!!!
What is up with some of you guys...you are obviously, way more Holy than me...?!

Thanks GoldenGlory... X2 "But I guarantee a lot of Americans are blind to the past of A LOT of the business and people they support."

No offense Jim but I notice the CCA backs him HUGE. How can a company that supports conservation support a guy that took his kids poaching and submitted poached deer as records in other states not to mention the book of fishing violations he was charged with and plead down? I understand the holier than thou argument, but the argument that has nobody else done anything wrong in their lives is a bit off. Do people lie on their taxes sure. Is that on the same level as taking kids poaching multiple times evading Wardens, lying about it, then on top submit said poached deer as records?!?! So here’s a question should we let the guy that was caught back east cheating in the KBF series back into the KBF? I mean all he did was have multiple modified bump boards and stole thousands of dollars in tournament winnings. Should we forgive and forget and let him back into the series?
