Got a late start yesterday was on the water at 10am left the harbor and started pushing to salt creek halfway there I tried making bait got one big mackerel used him as cut bait after about a hour of drifting I finally got a decent 8 inch mack put him on a halibut rig and wasn't in the water 10 minutes and my reel was screaming did 3 good runs before got it to my yak and saw it was a nice thresher he rolled up in my line made one more run before I landed him didn't measure him or weigh him

The water temp was 75 water was calm slow drift the only down side was getting bait only two mackerel

You got that right perfect amount of bait and just enough meat to split with my buddy I was after a halibut but still great day. Also has any one else been having issues making bait in dana point?

Yep I was out at the point at 545 thursday. Kept catching baby striped perch. I did manage 3 Mack's. 1 14 incher and 2 good sized. Went out 3 miles for Nada, hoping for a shark just for fun at the end. Last week no problems with bait made just outside harbor mouth.

Interesting. I don’t think I’ve seen that species before. Cool

Last year I kept catching those on a sabiki near the headlands. I was wondering what they were. Now I know
