This is a late report for our mid-May trip to Cabo. This time of year is not great for kayak fishing. The surf was up, and unless you launch at the Playita marina (difficult for me solo) it's awfully tough dealing with the summer shore break. I managed to sneak out twice. My first trip conditions turned rough and it was a lot of work just for one small Cabrilla. The second outing I landed a decent Sierra and got cut off on another. They are great fighters and lots of fun.

Overall fishing this season has been lousy. Too much wind and no bait. Sierra has been my only decent catch. I guess it's pay back for last year's fantastic tuna, Mahi Mahi and Amberjack bite..... That's fishin'.

Anyway, that's it for me. Our neighbor made a very generous offer and now we are in escrow. I'm happy but heart broken at the same time. I won't be kayak fishing in Cabo again any time soon.

I'm shipping the Revo 13 up to Monterey. Anyone know of a good kayak fishing guide there? I need some local knowledge.

There's a nor-cal fishing forum better suited for finding someone to fish with in Monterey. Great Rock fishing there, and a lot of easy launches inside the bay.

I think this is a map of launches out there.

I would refresh your cold water kayak gear. Water is COLD up there.

Yes, I'm totally spoiled by warm water kayaking. Years ago I used to launch around Malibu wearing a farmer John style wet suit but it was pretty uncomfortable and doesn't fit anymore. I was thinking about buying a thin wet suit bottom.....? Definitely unsure about what to wear for cold water.

Great map, thanks. I've seen Central Coast's web site before but I believe they focus on the Moro Bay / Pismo Beach area. I'll be up in Carmel and Monterey.

That sounds like a tough move for kayak fishing, but Carmel/Monterey are a beautiful change of scenery. Aside from rockfish, they sometimes get White Sea Bass, Halibut, Salmon, and Striped Bass up there. A shot at Sturgeon if you make a drive to SF Bay.

This website may be a good start for your fishing transition:

Monterey Marty has a nice ring to it...

Good luck on the move.

Thanks. Yes, I’ll miss kayaking in Cabo. It was a financial decision.
