Well haven't done one of these in a long while.
Surf walk and launch 0500
Didn't waste time making bait
3 YT on the jig 0645 -0715
1 harvested, 2 sent back to fight another day.
Calicos on the chew lost count 20-30 10-15"ish
Landing tide on the way up waves crashing on the shore, hopped out in thigh deep water. 0800
Have fun boys

So little detail. Like depth, what kind of jig ( top water or yo-yo ) location. The ocean and la Jolla doesn't count. Fish move around so you're not giving away the secret spot. You're just giving a complete report. Not just bragging.

There's two major strategies in Japan with jigs, slow pitch and high pitch.
As easy as it comes is likely high pitch.
Not that any of this matters, because if you're not fishing with braid, you're wasting the effort.
Learn your tackle, and you will be able to target fish effectively, the rest come with putting in time. Hell, even just putting in the time with donated tackle is enough.

my man sorry didn't realize i need to give you a pin drop of the location. I gave a report that i caught some fish. Don't be salty. Same style of report I give every time. It was the first time being out in a very long time due to having a new baby (our first). I have spent hours and hour learning how to fish LJ I have hung more YT, WSB, halibut and bass then i can remember.
But here you go.
Fish caught with light to no wind, YT in 110' bass all over.
Jig slow pitch color blue and pink
reel tranx 400 line 50# maxcuatro leader 40# seaguar fluoro premier
rod Phenix black diamond 809H
Next time i will include more information a pin drop and a video.

I was just heading out. Way to make short work of them. Thanks for openly sharing all your secrets. Jig, color, location, etc. etc.... I did manage to break the skunk on a juvenile White Sea bass. Either questionably legal, or 1" short using my measuring tape on paddle. None the less, released to live another day. Again congrats, and thanks. By the way, you had mentioned I was on the border of the State Marine Reserve when I ran into you. I guess making bad in such an area is prohibited? Happy Memorial Day everyone. Hope everyone remained safe.

Yeah nice talking with you. Yes making bait there is a no no. Great job on the WSB always better to let swim away when in question.

Agree 100%
This is why many people (myself included) don't post reports here. Kevin tries to help out complete strangers with timely information and you talk shit to him about "not giving enough details".
Hey my guy, you gotta be on the ocean to catch a fish. If a wide open report like this doesn't get you motivated to go get on the water, nothing will. Fishing is about the hunt, not having the bite details fed to you "mama bird" style on the internet. Most OGs on this site would probably say that he gave out TOO MANY details, but hey that's a whole other kettle of fish :D :jig:
My opinion: if somebody told you exactly when, where, how to get a bite... you didn't really catch that fish, you just reeled it in. It was a charitable donation to your cooler. Thanks Kevin for your philanthropy! :you_rock:
Congrats on your baby,
and on this great day if fishing! :cheers1:

Even if he went out to the same location with the same bait and setup 1 hour later he might not catch anything. In the end it's being in the right place at the right TIME. That's why everyone says spend time on the water and eventually you'll get something. I took a guy outside of mission bay and he caught a 30# WSB. I have yet to catch a keeper, and I was the one that taught him how to flyline. The fun is in the time on the water.
Congratulations on the new bundle of joy and on the YT. I spent about 6 hours out there with a buddy of mine and we only manages 6 fish together. We tried trolling both lures and a mac and couldn't produce anything. Finally ended up getting some rockfish and white fish to take home though. Hopefully next time we can have your type of day.
BTW, thanks for all the info, I agree with the others, your first report was plenty good.
No good deed goes unpunished.

Nice report but even better reading. Great way to laugh my ass off while I drink my morning brew. And so selfish of you not to give further details as current, how many kayakers out there and their colors. and most important how many ladies were wearing thong bikinis. Next time we expect much more details.

Kevin,
Many of us so-called "old-timers" don't bother posting much anymore, but as one of the many who've known you as a "kid" from years and years of on-the-water contact, am really glad to hear of your becoming a dad. Indeed, if all goes well, I'll be out for the first time in many moons this weekend with my son (a rarity on both counts).
Gosh - even a note from "Lamb" as well!

Nice post, sounds like a good time to get on the water. Seems the red tide has pretty much passed although when I surf the crashing waves still have that odd "tint" to them. Good to hear the bite is on, I'll try and get out there soon.

I'm new to the kayak world, but not to fishing. While I greatly appreciate the advice and reports I find here, I get why some don't want to put all the details out there. It took me and my buddy years of trips back and forth to San Clemente Island, tons of trial and error and literally thousands of dollars in fuel and gear before we landed our first BFT over 300#. But so much more satisfaction comes from knowing you were successful because you did your own research, monitored weather/ocean conditions, picked the spot, rigged your own gear and got the right bait out in exactly the right location and landed the fish you were after. Can't beat that feeling.
That said, I give plenty of detail in reports I've written so far because, well, usually by the time a report gets written, it's already too late. The bite is off. Conditions have changed. Whatever. But I also appreciate the reports those of you write so I feel it's the least I can do to give back when I can. Also, most of my reports are from local bass, so I'm not necessarily offering any groundbreaking news. Spoiler alert: Calico bit on sardines!

Having been to Japan and hoarding tackle, I can say with certainty there's no dedicated slow-pitch targeted tackle stateside, so it won't help people to turn them on to it.
There's tons of fakes and stuff pretending, but if you want to bring these techniques to our nearshore waters, you will have to improvise. Or you can go to Japan and bring me back some jigs while you're at it. Then I might even show you how to use them.
Neither here nor there, if you're jonesing for a fish, do it your way.

Nice work Kevin and thanks for sharing!
Also, for others... its all about time on the water.
I have spent many early mornings out at the Jewel and you'll see Kevin putting in his time.
Ha, I remember one time I got hit and I looked out and then shortly after Kevin got nailed. After finishing the battle, I paddled up to Kevin to compare and both of us had solid homeguards on the deck.
Good times!

Hey Chris, long time no talk brother.. In all fairness I was out that day and it was never Wide Open..
The report clarified a lot however..
I was on the inside with a group.. about 70 feet of water... Kev must have been on the middle out.. straight in front of the condo in that 100 foot range.. There was another group of mostly boats out about 3 miles off the point not but 1 or 2 kayakers there..
The location described here was crawling with kayaks, likely 15.. 5 or so boats scattered...
Thanks for the information Kev, let alone the clarification... Cheers on helping others bruh:cheers1:
like many have said, its about time OTW.. I hit those schools of terns and bass with a jig about 50 times, produced a 15 inch calico , 14 inch white fish, and 2 nice salmon groupers off the bottom.. as a couple others commenters said, after that initial bite which was at sun up- early there was not much unless you waited around 12 hours for the PM bite and tide change when the Tails were spotted and caught again.. Time OTW folks
