BFD & BBQ @ DP
*Big Fish Day & Potluck BBQ at Dana Point

Yep, you guessed it! Another thinly disguised excuse to get out of the house and go kayak fishing. On the other hand, it's for a good cause and you just might take home a few of your buddy's hard earned bucks.

Join us at Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor on Saturday August 2nd for a friendly get together and pot luck BBQ. Fishingkayaks.net and the Loco Pescadores will supply free hot dogs with all the fixin's. If you can, bring a side dish to share.

Saturday August 2nd - Baby Beach in Dana Point Harbor
2 Jackpots - $20. Antie - Human powered craft only, no motors
Biggest Bass (Calico, Sand, or Spotted Bay Bass)
Biggest Fish (no Bass, Rays, Skates or Sharks)
6:00 - 7:00am launch - Noon Weigh-in - 12:30 BBQ

Half goes to the anglers with the single biggest bass and single biggest fish other than a bass, ray, skate or shark. The other half goes to the KFACA to help represent kayak angling interests during implementation of the California Marine Life Protection Act along our coastline. In the unlikely event that you don't know about the Kayak Fishing Association of California (KFACA) or the series of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) coming soon to southern California, please visit the website at www.kfaca.org (http://www.kfaca.org) for more information.

We'll post a "roll call" the week before to get an idea how many people might be coming and what kind of side dish or whatever they may want to bring.
Other than that, just show up between 6:00 and 7:00am with $20 and pick which jackpot you want to be in. We're trying to to keep things real simple and just have some fun.

Just a reminder that the BFD & BBQ @ DP to benefit the KFACA is coming up this Saturday August 2nd. Help support the KFACA while maybe taking home a few jackpot bucks yourself. < Click here for details (http://www.fishingkayaks.net/kfacabenefit.htm) >

There have been good Sand Bass and Calico bites lately along the 'Pipe' and the jetty wall out front and the reefs off Capo. Halibut are on the chew at Doheny, south of the red dinger off the Point and also inside the harbor. The occasional BIG WSB is caught in the kelp off the Point.
Water temp is 67-71.
Incoming 5.8' tide from a minus.
New moon phase with light swells predicted for Saturday. There are also grunion runs predicted on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

To help give us some idea of how many people may be showing up (not counting the last minute arrivals), please post your reply on this thread. It won't give us a count but it does help.

So far, we will have plenty hot dogs, buns and condiments + some BBQ chicken and ribs. If you are planning on bringing a side dish, chips, drinks ,etc., that would be great. If you're just bringing an appetite, that's cool too.
BTW: Open containers of alcoholic beverages :cheers1: are unlawful at Dana Point Harbor and OC Beaches so please don't be caught walking around with any alcoholic beverage containers.;)

Hell of a deal.
I'll fedex some smelly bait, so you get the whole package. I hear Ranch99 has good seafood, if you want to eat some.

All you other guys, I'll see you Sat.

P13's outta :puke:North Laguna sucks.....Zed can I cook your hot dog for you?

20lb+ WSB side bet anyone?(no harbor/doheny 28" BS)....$10 and winner takes half/other half to KFAC, no one scores then all of it goes to KFAC. Troy, your pops can't play.

Zed

He can't play on Sat's anyway.
But I got his dope.

How was the surf in OK, Grego? Pretty flat? You have some flatland anxiety built up, or something.
Are you referring to my [puke] green P13? At least I'm seen and not confused with a white-cap --with all the stupid f'n pb's between Newport and Dana. But your hardhat is high-vis, so I guess you're good.

I was worried about my average wsb getting beat by dpliska's bigass 'but. So any way to get dp OUT of the equation, I'm for it.

Pliska says he's going to put up $40 and plans to enter and win BOTH jackpots. Pretty ambitious of him but I wouldn't say he can't do it either.

We're talking WSB only bet, QUALITY meat, I'm tired of eating butt meat and don't like being called a "butt muncher".....I don't like making little fish fillet fingers out of bass either.

Zed
07-30-2008, 02:36 PM
So that means $20 more for the side bet for dp. I'm sure he has a tourney fund he can dip into.

Pretty long odds there, grego. I feel I've got a better chance to out 'but pliska than catch a seabass. Maybe I'll just follow Cabo.

Is the bait barge now charging $10 and how has the bait been?....I'll probably try and make my own, but am curious.

Andy,

The bait barge raised prices to help cover rising fuel costs. Kayak scoops are now $10 but the bait is consistently good sized and well cured. They tend to give you a lot of bait compared to kayak scoops I've gotten from other bait barges. Currently they have 5-7" Sardines.

I fished the point early yesterday. Launched around 4:00. It got a little windy at dawn but layed down nicely by 6:00. Water was 71 and clear blue.

It was a bit tough making bait early but I got 3 oversized spanish. I was wishing I had picked up some sardines on my way out. Started trolling north along the kelp line with a 1/2oz barrel to keep it in the water. Zinged real good at around 6:30, waited a 5 count and pulled that big spaniard right out of it's mouth
Kept working the same area and an hour later zzzz...ZZZZZZing again. Waited a 10 count, the rod loaded up and it made a strong short run into the kelp. I had 40# spectra on and started sawing through but lost it before I could cut my way out.:banghead: There were some balls of sardines around after dawn but couldn't manage them on the only sabiki I had with me.

10:00am - Paddled back to the bait barge and picked up some Dines. Did a quick pass for 'buts off the river mouth at Doho and then the usual spots around the harbor before landing. Got lots of shorts and 3 just legals but no big girls. Targeting flat ones early at the tide turn probably would be a different story.

What a coincidence, the massive balls of bait off DP are...5"-7" 'dines, with smelt and small jackmacks and bigass green macks. Bigger jackmacks are in the kelp.

And there is a LOT of bait out there. I was outside of CK for most of the morning in the midst of flopping 'dines and smelt. My live bait [greenmack] swam happily all morning, so I switched to a squid. Caught a browbait on squid so I put the brown back down. Nothing on the brown.

Got some sadbass on plastics (greens), 1 woulda been a contender at 23".
Handful of tomcod, and barracuda.

Talking to CK, I realized I maybe shoulda been closer to the kelp.

Rossman had a bigger hook-up out between the spars, but it spit the hook.

Later in the day the inshore water was turned and colder, but at launch it was warm all the way to the outside.

Just a heads-up: There is a significant S swell running right now. All you guys that like to fish Doho, keep your eyes on the horizon and don't get caught by those long-period swells.

CYA Sat,

Z

Thanks to everyone who made it out to the BFD & BBQ to benefit the KFACA. I had a great time and seeing all the regulars (you know who you are) and some new faces too.

There were 29 kayak anglers total; 15 entered the Biggest Bass jackpot and 22 entered the Biggest Fish (exlcuding bass, sharks, rays and skates). There were also several people who antied up $40 to enter both Jackpots. Total entries came to $740.

Mike (Margarita Mike) Bohemke won the Bass Jackpot with a 4lb 1oz Sand Bass for $150.

Dave Pliska won the Big Fish Jackpot with a 5lb 4oz Halibut for $220. Dave graciously opted to donate 1/2 of his jackpot to the KFACA.

Together, we raised a total of $500 for the Kayak Fishing Association of California.:cheers1:

Thanks again for participationg and hope to see you all out on the water soon. :you_rock:

Best,

Keith Martin (aka; Cucamonga Keith)
