Picked up my very first Yellowtail on the yak. Was amazing fishing experience and looking forward to many more. He hit the swim bait on the troll hard.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200806/f55a24a5f7c4208885fd9fe778424f65.jpg

Congratulations on your first Kayak Yellowtail. You'll never forget your first yellowtail, the fast runs, the clicker and the drag screaming, the rod bendo and the unbelievable hard pull. Then after a while the beautiful sight at color and the beautiful colors when bringing it on deck. The only thing that comes close to that great feeling is when you eat it. Just wait till you fight one twice that size, your arms will feel like noodles after the fight.

Straight out from LaJolla shores in roughly 120’ water.

I’ve caught some large Yellowtail off my old neighbors power boat. I just couldn’t imagine it off a kayak. It was truly amazing. I just started kayak fishing a few months ago. I cant believe how much I love it.

Not to be a dick; but make sure you're clear of the reserve if you're trolling out there

120' is no where near the preserve. Just saying.

Yep well past the reserve. The water gets over 300’ deep on the paddle out then goes to about 60’ then starts getting deeper again. I was at 120’ once the I passed the first deep section.

I could be wrong, but charts show the southeastern terminus of LJ canyon extending past the line running due north from Pt La Jolla that demarcates the western boundary of the no fish zones, and puts some deep water off limits; but OP says he paddled across the canyon and onwards to safe territory, so he's good :reel:

OP, were you holding the rod when the fish hit the swimbait? Very thrilling if so.

No it was in the rod holder. Funny thing though I bought a cheap Chinese rod holder that mounts on the rail of the old style Hobie Pa 14. As soon as the yellow hit it the rod holder exploded. A spring flew out the plastic thread nob broke I half and shot in the water and the rod just about hit the water just before I grabbed it.

I knew not to buy the cheap Chinese rod holders but just had to live and learn.
