So I am not looking for exact coordinates or anything, but I’m wanting to target spider crabs specifically with hoop nets. Was wondering what are good areas to target for them? Near jetties, rock likes, kelp beds, open flats fo sand, etc.. I live a few mins from Kings Harbor so that would be my target area to hoop. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Why do you want spider crabs? I always caught them as by-catch when lobster hooping King Harbor (inside & out). Gave them all to my Korean mother-in-law. Some were full and some were empty.

I have caught them toward the end of Zuniga, either side of the channel, closer to the channel with out getting killed.

Is there a size limit on spider crabs?

I hear the meat is sweet
I’ve got a lot in LA harbor. Might be going out this weekend if you want to meetup. Always good to have someone watching your back

As a kid, we caught them decades ago off the Redondo horseshoe pier. Our crab trap consisted of a bicycle rim with nylon netting and a bridle line for hauling it up on the pier. For bait, a mackerel tied in the middle of the net. When retrieving the trap, the crab's legs fall through the netting making it very difficult for them the get out of the net. Spiders were the most common, Dungeness were less frequent.

Be cautious of eating anything that lives on the bottom of LA Harbor. There are tons of Monsanto's DDT sitting on the ocean bottom off Whites' point, and the harbor is the resting ground for many of the toxins that wash into the storm drains from the city. Not to mention the many industrial businesses that operate there with many accidental containments.

Sadly so.... I grew up on the hill, and love LA harbor..... Even got my Pilotage, and at one time was lined up to become a Harbor Pilot there until the economy crashed. Having transited the port many times on Merchant ships and Sportfishing, I have witnessed the toxins more often than I care to think about.

On the topic of DDT off the LA coast.. this is a recent article highlighting the trove of mystery barrels being continually uncovered by Scripps/NOAA's sonar imaging between PV coast and Catalina. May not be new information for some, but that sonar image of the barrels is looking more like a long exposure shot of the night sky constellation! Yikes!!
