What's a surface iron fish? Does it look like a yellowtail fish? I've caught plenty of fish using a surface iron while on my kayak though.

Horrible experience. Wouldn't recommend it. I burned the pics a long time ago to prevent my kids from finding out what daddy has done.

I’ve heard they will bite the surface iron...

Seriously though there are a lot of reports detailing surface iron hookups. Lots of them have pics, too. Do a search and you'll find them. Then go rope some donkeys on the iron and post about it.

Off SE Florida, we rarely throw hard irons as done on the West Coast. Our biggest surface action is on False Albacore, Mahi, and Blackfin Tuna. Usually, the acrobats are chasing micro baits that drift in on weedlines. In which case, a large iron will be ignored, but matching the hatch with a Crappie jig can be productive. A friend of mine hooked a sailfish on a Crappie jig(elephants eat peanuts). When the baitfish are bigger, poppers can be productive.

Other side of peninsula. Usually when I get back from fishing Baja it’s so good I don’t even feel like fishing here anymore. But that wears off eventually.

Haha it would be a dream to fish Baja but how
Do you keep your yak from getting swiped. Does travel insurance cover it ?

More likely to get stolen in Los Angeles than Baja.

right? there was that one dude maybe four years ago who had his whole truck stolen by a bum at the Vallecitos street launch...was unloading stuff in the a.m., left the keys in the ignition, and some random hobo hopped in his truck and took off.

Definitely the best way to get a yellow! The excitement when you see them sun bathing is like no other(like seeing a pair of boobies for the first time). I apologize ladies just trying to get my point across . Keep your eyes open and your head on a swivel. Most importantly ALWAYS have a surface iron ready to fire. Here are a few that I could find. Sorry guys not a very good story teller. All in our backyard, beautiful la jolla.:jig::yt::cheers1: I know there's more, let's see them!

I mostly Fly Line a live Greenback, as my choice of targeting La Jolla Yellowtail, but I do throw some irons when conditions demand. 32# La Jolla Yellowtail March 2017, kept it and donated to Heroes on the Water, after cleaning, filleting and vacuum slealing, it was used to feed the Disabled Vets and Volunteers at an HOW Function.
