I'm sitting on my deck looking at 10+ boats fishing for bluefin right off the coast from Del Mar to Encinitas--within EASY kayak range. They have been there every night this week.
PS Don't tell anyone!:reddy:

Easy to say "easy kayak range" - I have been monitoring the fleet location HERE (https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:-117.5/centery:32.8/zoom:10) and generally have been 8 - 10 miles out, but at night, its very hard to judge that distance when you see bright lights.
TIP: You can use "copy coordinates" option on MarineTraffic and paste coordinates into Google Earth's search bar, and then use the ruler to measure distance from a launch spot. The Grande, right this moment, is fishing 8.7 miles off La Jolla. The Searcher is 12 miles off Del Mar

I listen to let's talk hookup every week and he said a easy kayak paddle off del mar and Encinitas this is a first never have the Tuna been that close in my life living in San Diego. That's why I said WSB and they catch them when there's none in the sports boat count.
According to Google 2.9 miles is as far as you can see a light at night on the ocean at sea level before the curvature hides it. I have paddled to lights on the horizon off LJ and that seems about right

FYI The tuna and dorado schools have come close-in every August for many years now, I have quite a few friends that have caught dorado and tuna from kayaks off La Jolla and Dana Point, like one to three miles out ... here is just one example of evidence in case you think this is the FIRST YEAR!

Agreed "a light AT SEA LEVEL" AND if your eyes are also at sea level. These big sport and commercial boats have lights FAR ABOVE SEA LEVEL. Looking off a road at the beach its likely you are already 25'+ above sea level. I too have paddled out to the "light boats off of La Jolla and Pacific Beach" many times on squid beds, I can tell you this is not that.
I just saw a Navy ship off La Jolla, during daylight hours. It looked like it was way out there but I could see all of the detail of the guns off the deck and bow and stern (I have better than 20/20 vision) and what seems like the hull down to the waterline.
So I got home and immediately checked on Google Earth using the MarineTraffic link (https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:-117.9/centery:32.6/zoom:10) with a location of WARSHIP 56[US] which states it is ONE MINUTE OLD. That vessel is 19.5 miles from my street and I can see it clear as day.
I can also see a bunch of large fishing boats clustered on the horizon straight west of La Jolla. At night their lights will be easily visible as they are 20'+ above sea level. Here is a photo of the Cobalt (https://www.marinetraffic.com/en/photos/of/ships/shipid:6143422/shipname:COBALT?order=date_uploaded), which is located about 17 miles out right now in that area. I can see easily it during the day, imagine if it had a bunch of bright lights, at night?!
All of that said, there is a big group of very small boats fishing white seabass at the kelp spot off WindanSea today. There were dive flags up earlier this morning, there are always seabass around.

Schools big enough the sports boats would target 3miles out.

You seem excited about it and should go fish for them!!! Do it! (P.S. I have been ON Lets Talk Hookup many times as a guest and listening for more than 25 years as well.) GOOD LUCK out there!!

Last 2 times on my friend's boat while returning from the 181/209 area we came across bluefin only 4-6 miles outside of Dana Point Harbor. Lots of private boats fishing them and saw a few landed/tail wrapped. We were on a tighter schedule than usual so we couldn't stay and fish them for long, but they were definitely close as of last Wednesday at least. We had a kill bag loaded with Yellowfin/Dorado already, so we weren't hurting for fish. Otherwise, we might have been more irresponsible and stayed out later lol

This was funny. The boats have been drifting for WEEKS off Mission and Pacific Beach as well. "Maybe its Seabass"
