I picked up a copy of the San Diego Reader a few months ago, and threw it in the back of my truck and forgot about it. I pulled it out today and it had a good story about kayak fishing. Maybe the author is a BWE member? The story does mention Ross--RIP--a well known and liked member.

Nice post -- Cool article. I share his passions. Our paths almost crossed as I also worked part time deck on the Grande out of 22nd st. in 1981. In 1979 - 80, I was on the Freedom which was originally out of Ports o Call, and moved to 22nd st. in 1980. Bad ass that those boats are still running strong.

He mentions fishing a maximum of 40lb test for stability reasons. I guess the kayaks have become more stable since then, as I will use up to 100lb braid and 200lb leader when targeting grouper. Working the rod strictly pointed at the bow becomes mandatory to prevent flipping, and breaking off snags is a SOB, but it is doable on a PA14.

He's an expat who lives down in San Quintin. I know he's on the San Diego Kayak Fishing FB page, not sure if he's on BWE.

When you worked on the Grande, did you know a Tonie Bangos?

The name does not sound familiar. I was not full-time. I don't remember who worked the galley. I worked with John Dipley, Frank Hall, John Hess, Les Fetton, and there was a kid who liked to lift weights and he would let me shower at his parent's house in Pedro between trips. I believe his name was Lewy.
