View Full Version : 8/24 La Jolla - Mr. Bonito, meet Wasabi

Launched just after 4:30 am with Jared, and headed out to the 'spot'.

It was bumpy and breezy all morning. No bites for the first 3 1/2 hours.

Then, Jared got a double hookup 100 yards away, and landed both
yellows. How dare they ignore my magic bucktail!

Jared headed in and the birds started swirling in shallower near the point.

I caught a couple bonito on the surface iron and then got rocked by a
yellow on a yo-yo iron in 70' of water (shallow), sacrificed my favorite Iron
Man #5 blue and white to that fish.

I trolled live bait, then drifted for halibut for nothing. Off the water by
3:30, landed in pretty rough surf, went for a swim on purpose to keep the
kayak upright! Very crowded and comical, there were dozens of kayaks
(crashing) in the surf zone at any given time.

On Saturday, my family and I tried out San Diego Bay for the first time
with the DORA rods. The girls had a good time releasing a few spotties.

I should get a few Dora rods spooled up with 15 lb spectra, a handfull of 1/2 oz castmaster spoons to add to my guiding arsenal. If I could put my clients kids on a few Bonito I could offer the full package :D. The bendo shot of Jared is cool, but your going to remember renting that boat, and catching those spotties for the rest of your life, awesome.

Jared's rocking some new monster Lowrance fishfinder on his kayacht -
when we launched in the dark he turned the thing on and it blinded us
both for a few minutes. :eek:

These fish are tough. I think Jared was getting tired after battling and
gaffing the first fish ... the second :yt: also battled against the
kayak's rod holder for 5+ minutes, which probably just pissed it off more!

I think Jared's sharpening his gaff today ... :p


Nabeeko, that is raw bonito, and I like it better than yellowtail.

Could you please make a post about the finer points of "how to bleed and prepare" a Bonita/Yellowtail for a sashimi dish like the one posted above.

That is a fine looking finished product.

I have never prepared Bonita, I usually release them as nuisance fish, but they are as plentiful as mackerel right now! So please do tell your technique for Bonita sashimi!!

More plentiful than mac's for sure. I couldn't catch a single mac for bait and nailed 9 Bones with the Croc on the bottom of my sabiki trying a couple of weeks ago.:eek:

Bonito Shashimi is wonderful, bleed and put on ice it's surprising GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Try lightly salting it for a few minutes, then sear it slightly on the outside before slicing, its even better that way.

Great catch - looking forward to my first yellowtail!

I'm curious about the choice of kayak color for the hobies i've seen on this site and on kayak4fish. Seems like their mostly colored Ivory or Moss, is there any reason to this? Less spooky to the fish or less attractive to the Landlord?

1) Bring ICE on your kayak, maybe a soft ice chest in the hatch with 4
frozen water bottles
2) slice the bonito's gills as soon as you get it on the boat and hang the
fish upside-down by the tail for a few minutes till all the blood is gone
3) put immediately on ice
4) Fillet bonito, removing ALL of the bloodline "the red part" <-fishy

There is no logic to the color, just preference. Avid fishermen seem to
tend to lean toward earthtones "just in case it matters" ..... maybe.
I've never worried about sharks for a minute, nor thought the fish would
be more afraid of one color over another, they see a dark kayak
bottom regardless of color. Go with what looks good to you!!
