i no this subject probably gets blown up every winter...but this is my first winter kayak fishing..ive read Pat Holmes write up on fishing the iron.
i no the general area where most yellows are taken (i think). but my question is.. do you guys have more luck throwing your iron a mile. let it hit the bottom. then a steady retrieve all the way back to the yak. OR do you like to keep your iron on the bottom with more of a jigging retrieve.
thanks for any advice....:cheers1:

I make a short cast let it hit the bottom then BURN IT 20-30 cranks depending on where my marks are. Immediately throw it into freespool, let it hit again and repeat. I usually get 3 yoyo's per cast. My last retrieve is when the iron is straight down from the boat.

If you let it sit on the bottom your going to catch a lot of rockfish and Salmon Grouper. You will NEVER out crank a yellowtail. :jig:

I drop straight down and quickly yo-yo up 20 -30 cranks, droping back down a couple of feet then repeat.
Check out this video. I am not a salesman. I think that there are other jigs out there that are just as good and less expensive but the technique is what works.

I have never used that kind of jig before but have some that I picked up a while back. Can someone Please explain how it is rigged?

There are alot of sport fishing legends that are big believers in the 45 degree grind.

Variety is what works in my opinion.

Hey! That's the jig that I caught my huge Hali on!:reel: That was a great instruction vid. Wish catching fish was THAT easy!

Do you guys fish the megabait jigs the same way as the Shimano Butterfly jig or more like you would an iron?
