Looking to replace present fishfinder with a more advanced and concise color fishfinder for the kayak. Don't need a combo gps unit. Mainly concerned about fish recognition and clarity. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks...

Furuno makes some smaller units now, even a monochrome model with much more power than the simple lowrance and eagles.I dont profess to know to much but I think power around 300W RMS makes for better recognition.
My sounder cant even tell me how deep I am when I am over the canyon less than a mile in front of the pier.Others would probably know better.

OK,just came back from furuno's website. They have a color model with a 5.6 inch diagonal screen with 2500 watts of power(600w RMS) the unit has digital filters that remove clutter and has superior tunability. If you go on their website they have demo videos of the fishfinders.

furuno is great, but sometimes more touble than their worth... whatever you get, go digital... analog is out.

You could start by looking at something reasonably cheap like a Humminbird 343C.
