The squid will show up on 1-30-09 at exactly 3 am in the middle of the S.D BAY right in front of the battleship NIMITZ.

I usually make my squid at the Seafood City Market, 3rd and Palomar in Chula Vista. They're always there. Mike

Anyone else going to be there?
Anyone else going to be there?
I'm already there...
And it is COLD!
Is'nt the NIMITZ an aircraft carrier?

I make my Squid at Squidco. It takes me less than 5 minutes to make bait, and haven't missed yet.
Joey has a big white freezer loaded with the stuff.:)

Seriously though, we are coming close to the time.

I'm not the expert but most times I'm out and there are live squid around, they won't touch the frozen stuff. That's my experience, take it for what it's worth. Carry a candy catcher type squid setup and drop it to the bottom everyonce in a while. Chances are slim anybody is going to tell when they're in. There will be enough people out just from the friends of friends of the lucky ones who find out first hand.

Here's a serious reply for you! The squid have been known to show up anywhere from December to March. That canyon is pretty deep and the squid are usually there year around on both ends, that explains the big mossback YT. When the squid bite goes off, no one talks until usually a newbie post a picture saying that he got his first YT on a live squid. Things are a little more interesting these days with WCW and the format. One of the reason it starts and ends in March is to see a close finish between the top 5. They have to post there fish within 24 hours so if you watch the usual suspects post some quality fish, you know that there is a bite. If I were you, I wouldn't wait for a post, it's fun to find the bite on your own. Gear up with 40# and hang on, there are some slugs out there. Good luck and I hope this helps you get a nice one.

Just to let some of you guys know, last year was a very unique year in terms of squid and La Jolla.
I think many La Jolla vets will agree that last year was a very good year for squid, and as a result fishing in La Jolla was also very good.
Yes, squid do spawn every year. But the timing, location, and size of a squid run vary from year to year.
The ocean is a very dynamic ecosystem.
I hope we see another year like last year, but don't hold your breath... :bigear:
And for those of you that capitalized on the epic year last year, remember it!

Wait...you mean this whole global warming thing might be a hoax to make money and control people's freedoms...you mean the ocean systems might flux over tens, hundreds, thousands of years?
DAMN! I've got to sell my Al Gore video!
To get back on topic,
I too get my squids from Squidco... this bite is indeed hot in the white box, although I've heard from a few they paddle out in the wee hours of the night to fetch live ones...
