A sparse showing for Bajapalooza '06. Got down to PST with Corey about midnight on Friday, with little wind and a full moon to make setting up the tent an easy project. I forgot the camera at home, so no pictures.

Saturday morning was nice and calm. Birds were working schools of anchovies being eaten by candy greenbacks, but the food chain seemed to end there on the surface action. Joined up with Tobey, Avery, Gary, and Corey in working a reef that varied in depth from 30 to 80 ft. Lots of rockfish. The majority were olive rockfish, I believe. The wind gradually grew throughout the day. When the drift became too fast I tied up to some bull kelp in about 90 ft. of water. Caught quite a few more of the olive, along with some cabezon, reds, and whitefish. I'd like to hook a 8lb whitefish some day, they pull. After the 50th wind wave slopped over the side of the kayak, I decided to call it a day.

Some of the Loco Pescadores had rented a casa, so joined them for some outstanding dinner and many, many drinks. It rained off and on Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The swell had really picked up and the wind was howling today, so decided not to fish this morning.

It was a good weekend, and thanks to everyone who came down and made it so. I wonder if there will be any YT off Punta Banda in February?

Sorry guys we got tied up in Colonet... There was a little surf there, but with La Jolla training we all made it out everyday... A couple surfers had some nice rides, some of these waves were nice and hollow.

PST /= Colonet, thread-jacker.

PST was the best trip I've taken to specifically target rockfish. I was really surprised how few people showed up. Pretty bummed actually. Now I see that some took there ball and went and played elsewhere.

As soon as I get some pix hosted, I'll post 'em up.

That Chris, always teasing.

We should have gone to PST, sounds like you guys had better fishing. Surf at Colonet was hairy, with some off shore reef breaks that could spring up out of nowhere. Our jackpot was won by Litup1 with a sandbass.
The only action I found was a wide open tomcod bite, while not trying to dodge the grey whales that kept popping up uncomfortably close. I'll let Chris give the full details of a heck of an adventure.

I got into a wide open tomcod bite off of Erendira last summer. I haven't gone back because I don't think my heart could handle the excitement again. So Ken wasn't in the jackpot?

Tomcod count as exotics under the new rules, right?

I think all Ken caught was a wicked buzz from some good tequila.

Chris may still be a little addled from all the beer they drank on the drive back. Beer was the root cause of many of our "adventures". Got to see my first Baja meltdown though, pretty amusing.

Where can I get a Froman slingshot necklace. Too bad about the weather, still wish I would have been along for the ride.

The trip was fun and not very fishy-I definately want to go back there.
The endless rock wall was worth the trip just to see.
I met Froman and shook his hand-why I don't know.
Do you suppose he shoots his dinners with the slingshots
Carne-de-rato-tacos

I was just having fun Zed, sorry if you were offended. But we had planned to go to Colonet first, then up to PST. Then a SNAFU occured. I am glad you had the best time ever in PST! 8)

If I write up anything I will start a new thread, it will be called Fishless in Colonet! :D

No worries, Holy.

The only way the insane-o rockfishing  could have been better, was more heads with whom to talk about it.

Anybody that loves shallow water r/f, will love PST. Releasing rockfish rules!

Colonet was fun even though the fishing was slow. The Baja Meltdown was classic. I have lots of pics. I'll post them in the morning.

The sling-shots are at the border. That area where you just don't make eye contact with the vendors...
They're in there.

I do want to here the meltdown story. If it was a tranny meltdown, I REALLY want to hear it.

My upload of pix will be soon. Most of you know the scenery is the best part...unless you like rockfishing.

Don't want to give away the entire story, but let's just say I was the only one of 4 vehicles that could drive out for help Friday morning. 8) And one of the other three was freakin out.

The pics will tell the story better than anything. :D

Brad, I think someone has photograph of just how wicked that tequila was.

Fun trip even if the fish didn't want to play.

Hola to my PST brethren! At the end of a three-day weekend, the Peach stood alone... everyone else packed it in by mid-day Sunday due to some fairly shitty conditions. Don't hold your breath, it didn't get much better on Monday but I just had to stay and see for myself. Wind was down just a tad and the swell if anything had grown even bigger. Pretty hairy but at least today I didn't come close to capsizing. I may have some scenic pics to post later when I unpack my camera.

Check out http://www.mexfish.com/mfn/mfn.htm and click on the Feb. 9th, 2004 report. I've fished the "spot" from a panga.....it's a hell of a paddle (5-6 mi. round trip) from La Bufadora around the point to the Bay side about 4-500 yds. off the point rocks at a depth of 120-150ft and it's usually an early am bite.... Ivan sells those magic locally made brushed aluminum jigs at his shop but always seems to be out of them. I've hit Santa Ana conditions there in Feb. with 80 degree temps, sunny and beautiful.

PST: Where the fishing's good, and the cattle are nervous.

Can you blame them?

Nice to meet you seasick. It took some aplomb to go out Sunday. Good job.

Well it looks like some moisture got into my cheapo camera and distorted all my pics such as they were.

I just wanted to echo what Mark said; it was a pleasure to meet and hang out with the Loco Pescadores in the big house; as well as Corey and Kurt, Avery and Toby, Gary and Alex on Saturday evening. Big ups for Kurt on the satelite radio, that was an awesome surprise.

Man, as good as the conditions were on Saturday when I showed up (3hrs 10min from Oceanside; pulled in to PST at 5:30am) the fishing for me could not have been worse. Mustered only two small lings but put the great conditions to good use by paddling all the way up to the Soledad reef and then over to the pinnacles before letting the NW breeze blow me home. Sighted about 10 or 12 whales during the morning including several pairs that came within 20 or 30 yards of the kayak. My heart skipped a few beats when I began to make out a shape beneath me at one point... it went from whale? to SHARK! to (whew) mola mola.

Sunday I tried to fool myself into believing that the winds were just downslope morning conditions from the hills and I decided to make a go of it from the main launch site against Sam's (and, well, everybody else's) better judgement. The swell had come waaay up overnight and the cove was a washing machine but I made it outside without incident. But when I started north around the point I got caught by a gust that nearly capsized me; I think my damned crate almost killed me out there. Turned my TipperPro around and headed for the protected cove where at least I caught lunch for Sunday. Big thanks to Gary and Alex for helping me out of the water and up onto the new ramp.

Sunday afternoon, with everybody else making a run north for the border, was a bit surreal. Even Sam checked on me to make sure I really was staying and if I needed anything. Hmm, still have ice and beer, still have tortillas, still have firewood, still have the day off work Monday... no, I believe I'm good. Drove up the 4WD road and over to the other side just for giggles and some more awesome waves and spray scenery. (That's where my camera caught the water.) Ended the day fishing from the rocks and catching dinner, exploring some tidepools when the afternoon low came and then warming my feet by a fire on the cabana patio while watching the moon rise over the bay with Sam's mutt come over to keep me company. Sublime.

And then Monday, as I said, the wind was down a bit but the swell was perhaps worse. Outside awaited 10-15 foot swells easy with probably 8-9 second periods. I kept waiting to feel seasick but that didn't happen for over 2 and a half hours. So I stayed within sight of the PST houses which happened to be how far I could venture out and stay protected from the worst winds by the hills and fished a few spots for a couple more rockfish. Oh, and I left the crate behind this time and felt much more stable out there. Landed it on the main launch ramp; nearly pearled it right onto the concrete but lay back, straightened it out and skidded up high and dry in the middle of the ramp pretty as you please. Any landing you can walk away from I always say.

Though I wouldn't have minded the company for the last day and a half I'd have to say it was very relaxing to have PST all to myself. And though the fishing was scratchy at best I wouldn't trade the great day of whale watching on Saturday for anything.

As always, when I leave PST I can't wait to plan to return again.

But enought about PST... how about some of those Tequilla-induced Colonet meldown pics?!
