What a shmuck... hurt just looking at it. At first I thought it was a staged video. Some guy with a walmart rod and a jigmaster. Then I noticed the shot to the chest with the kayak... Unless you've got a decent stuntman, that was real.

Not a Schmuk, actually a great guy, who made multiple mistakes on his first surf launch. Took me about 5 years to get this video footage from him, he was a bit embarrassed.
I have seen this and worse at LJ.

gotta say, although no big, that break would have ate most on the way in or out.
My daughter figured it right away "why did he go at the wrong time?":D
Uh, Jim, he looks kinda like you, but in your younger days...:sifone:
Is that in No Cal? Looks like Mendocino...
Like Ices daughter said, timing is everything...

:luxhello: Awesome video!
I take a lot for granted, living near the ocean and having lots of years in the waves, but that guy looked like he was trying to F up. If he had a tail it would be be between his legs.
And never turn your back on the ocean! Jeez, I'm cringing.

cool video, I hope when I'm paddling in on Sunday morning I'm not in the "what not to do" part of the class!:biggrinjester:
That's Limekiln State Beach, in southern Big Sur. It is a difficult lauch, a beach break that produces a lot of surge. Good timing is critical - you have to go on the lull.

That shore break can be so decieving. Marine St. can get similar to that depending on the tides. I know by kayak fishing during the day, and coming in at night with full awkward SCUBA gear!

...
Come on now, though this was about 5 years ago the guy is at least 12 years older then me.
PAL is correct on the location.

Props to the angler / victim for giving you the video to share. That was pretty kewl of him. He could have been hurt much worse!!! We learn from our mistakes...OR even better at a SURF CLINIC. I'd say its money very well spent. The waves don't have to be big to get destroyed.

Jim, are you going to the MLPA meeting on Tuesday?

I was thinking about it, carpooling would be the key. Can't afford the $200 in fuel to run up there myself in my truck.

Didn't mean to offend. I've lost a handheld gps, bait-catching rod, tackleboxes. Even once had the head unit from my GPS/FF combo tore off by a wave. A guy swimming out to his zodiac caught it and brought it back to me. I've been that schmuk a time or two.

A consummate fisherman as yourself a "smuck" no way.....
Just messin' with ya Jim....
I don't know what's worse, the brutal no-holds barred comments or the pounding he took.
My 2 favorites....
"His first mistake is leaving the beach and allowing himself to be videotaped.." :D:D:D
and your comment about the photog not keeping his camera on the guy getting worked vs. the guy running...good stuff...

Good video reminder of what not to do! Classes are always great! I have had my fair share of mistakes launching and more so landing in the surf. Practice and lessons are a good thing! I would like to come to one of your classes but since I can't make that one, when are the next ones scheduled?

Need to look at the schedule, likely in late May. We can do one anytime, if you can get a few people together and I am in town.
